Road bike aerodynamics is something that I think is still under rated across all levels in cycling despite how much of an influence it has on your speed and consequent results .

Personally it’s something that I have experimented with a lot going to different extremes to find the right balance between aero and handling with my position.

This is something I like to work on with my riders because I know a few small positional changes can at the end of the day make more difference than a few more or less Watts of power

People often say that sport is about momentum, but a more precise metaphor is ´Inertia ´ the law of conservation of momentum.
That means that an object in motion will remain in motion at a steady speed unless an outside force is acted upon it to change that . Similarly an object that is stationary will remain stationary.
When things are going well it’s easy to ride that wave and keep on going , as you should ! However, when setbacks start to happen, that can lead to a negative spiral of things getting worse. The secret is to recognise this and just try to start making small steps to overcome the inertia and moving in your desired direction acknowledging that these initial steps will be the most difficult but once you are up to cruising speed it will get easier

Testimonial :

I have worked with Marinus since January . For this season, my goal was to lose weight while maintaining my fitness as well as possible. With Marinus’ help, I managed to lose 4-5kg of fat while increasing my FTP by 10-20W. Even better, I made great progress on my LT1, increasing it by around 20W, and my ability to generate big anaerobic surges in long rides and races improved substantially.

As a coach, Marinus is not afraid to mix things up and try new training ideas. While things like double vo2max days, 90 minute long heat sessions on the turbo or short runs after key interval sessions seemed alien to me at first, the results speak for themselves! I am also grateful for the ease of communication – be it last-minute changes to training due to my toddler falling ill, questions about diet, or tactical tips for a key race, Marinus is always swift to respond. All in all, I am really pleased with how things have worked out with my coach, and I’m looking forward to an even better next season with him!
