The reason we saw no flamingo in the Camargue in 2018 and the reason for the 2020 turn-around and this year's Flamingo Baby Boom: 12,000 flamingo have returned to the salt pans of Aigues-Mortes in 2020 as opposed to the normal 1,200 annual count of the past 50 years, during which time populations dwindled to such an extent no breeding pairs were sighted at all some years.
This year, in the absence of tourist traffic- motor boats and helicopters, etc.- there has been a significant increase in the sightings of baby flamingo. Nesting pairs mate for life, producing only one baby a year. They are easily scared from their nests, abandoning their nestlings, ever to return.
