The season is over! I am ready to return to the UK.
Conclusions I can make are:
I’ve had so much fun and generally enjoyed the whole experience.
I’ve made some good friends, maybe most I will never meet again, or not have further contact with unless we cross paths on a future season. But we enjoyed the times and experiences together.
Was I made to feel old, or ignored? Certainly not, if anything I gained a lot of respect. I was treated as part of the community that we called seasonnaires. Sure, I wasn’t out many nights going to bars like most of them, I had to make my excuses, but it’s all there if that’s your thing.
It wasn’t always smooth and I had a couple of run-ins with management, but they get it and it’s the pressure of the moment and the passion to do your best. Sometimes the management style was below what you’d expect, but again this was largely down to the nature of what we were doing.
Has my snowboarding and skiing improved? Without a shadow of doubt. I may not be throwing 360s in the park, but my ability to ride in all conditions, on and off piste has improved dramatically and I feel so much progression has been made.
While the pay hasn’t been great, I have managed to not dip into savings. A lot of people are heading home broke.
Would I do it again:
Yes, in a heartbeat! I don’t think I could go back to my old job.
It’s had its challenges, I’ve made mistakes and at times it’s been a little tedious. I don’t fully understand the whole holiday industry, the way it works and the expectations they have when it comes to the setup at the start before guests arrive and the shutdown once the guests have left. The work can be time consuming and you have to be fairly subservient at times. I get why, just maybe a bit long in the tooth to meet those expectations. They can be very particular and things are often cleaned, cleaned and cleaned again.
So if anyone reading this feels this could be for them, then what are you waiting for? I can guarantee you’ll have a life changing experience. It may not be for everyone, several fell by the wayside and returned home early, but if you think things through and can leave home behind for six months, have a fairly open mind, then you will have a good time. For next winter you need to start applying fairly soon.
I shall be returning in June for the summer season, based in Morzine, but living a nomadic lifestyle as I will be visiting Les Arcs and Val d’Isère at points to carry out summer maintenance. Might have to get myself a mountain bike now.
