Rest in love and peace 🕊️
There are some people whose passing leaves a silence far greater than words can describe.
We mourn not only the loss of Ratu Manoa Rasigatale, but the loss of a living library, a master storyteller, a guardian of culture, and a man who dedicated his life to ensuring that our people never forgot who we are.
In a world that moves ever faster away from its roots, Ratu Manoa stood firmly as a bridge between generations. He carried the stories of our ancestors, protected the wisdom of our elders, and shared the history of our people with a passion that inspired countless Fijians to reconnect with their identity. He understood that culture was not simply something to be remembered, but something to be lived, nurtured, and passed on. To many he was a teacher, a mentor, and a friend, but to all of us he was a custodian of something sacred, a keeper of knowledge and wisdom entrusted to him for the benefit of future generations.
The Uto Ni Yalo family owes a special debt of gratitude to Ratu Manoa. Long before Mama Uto sailed her first nautical mile, before she became a symbol of hope, cultural revival, environmental stewardship, and Pacific resilience, it was Ratu Manoa who gifted her the name she would carry across the ocean: Uto Ni Yalo, the Spirit of the Heart. Few could have imagined just how fitting that name would become.
For more than seventeen years, that name has travelled across the Pacific, carrying aid to communities in times of disaster, inspiring young people, reconnecting countless individuals with their culture, and reminding us all that the ocean does not separate us, it connects us. Every voyage she has undertaken, every lesson learned aboard her decks, every community she has visited, and every young person whose life has been touched through her journey carries a piece of the legacy that Ratu Manoa helped create.
Names are powerful because they carry meaning, purpose, and responsibility. Through the name he bestowed upon her, Ratu Manoa became forever woven into the story of Uto Ni Yalo. His contribution was not simply the naming of a vessel; it was the gifting of an identity that would come to embody the values, aspirations, and spirit of an entire movement dedicated to culture, education, service, and connection across our Moana.
As we reflect on his life, it is impossible not to acknowledge the impact he had on Fiji. Generations have grown up hearing his voice, learning from his knowledge, and benefiting from his tireless efforts to preserve the traditions, stories, and values that define us as iTaukei and as Pacific people. People like Ratu Manoa do not come around often. They are the keepers of memory, the protectors of identity, and the navigators who help a nation remember where it came from so that it never loses sight of where it is going.
He has now joined the stars that will help navigate our future, and his work remains all around us. It lives in our language, our traditions, our ceremonies, our stories, our children, and our communities. It lives in every effort to preserve and celebrate our culture, and for those of us who have had the privilege of sailing aboard Mama Uto, it lives every time her sails are raised to the wind and she sets course across the ocean he loved so deeply.
Moce mada Ratu Manoa.
Thank you for the stories, the wisdom, and your unwavering service to Fiji. Thank you for dedicating your life to preserving the heritage of our people, and thank you for giving our beloved Mama Uto the name she proudly carries across the Pacific today.
May the winds be fair, the seas calm, and the ancestors welcome you home. Though your voyage has come to its end, your legacy will continue to sail with us forever.
