Vinaka to Fiji Sports Commission(FNSC) Team Up and the project for the Safeguarding in Sports workshop series last week.

Badminton was thrilled to be part of the cohort 10 sports associations piloting this project component. Joining the sports groups like Squash, Skate, Netball, Va'a, Aquatics et al, it was also a great opportunity to network and talanoa with sporting peers about safeguarding and all it entails.

Badminton Fiji is reviewing it current policy (endorsed in 2022). It is also investing in this area alot more because safety of the Badminton community is very important to the Association and recognising its duty of care role.

This year has also seen a tremendous increase in kids, youth, girls and para taking up badminton so tis timely for the Association to ensure appropriate and updated policies and systems are in place.

// Fijian History Again at the 2026 AIMS Games Badminton Competition //

Fri 11 Sep, 2026, Tauranga, NZ

Abigail Corrie (St Annes, Suva) and Arohan Gogoi (Drasa Avenue, Lautoka) created history again becoming the very 1st Fijian Badminton players to win the Division 3 Mixed Doubles Finals of the Badminton Competition at the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships.

3 magnificent pieces of Fijian badminton history:
1. Competing at the historic, 1st-ever Badminton Fiji Primary Schools Tournament (31 Aug - 2 Sep) where they were chosen to read the Athletes Pledge

2. Being the 1st-ever Fijian students representing their schools in badminton at the AIMS Games - the world's largest junior schools sports event with over 14,500 athletes across 42 sports.

3. Winning the Mixed Doubles Finals.

Huge thanks to Badminton Oceania for helping to develop Fiji's Junior pathway. We hope to emulate Badminton Cook Islands who sent a huge 16-player team to the 2026 AIMS.

We owe Bay Of Plenty Badminton a huge debt of gratitude for assisting us to develop the Tournament Software draws for the Primary Schools Tournament, the Thunderbirds Lautoka League, and Western Friendlies Tournament.

Vinaka vakalevu to (honourary Fijian) Cam and Christine Hill of Good Neighbour for introducing food rescue food packs for all future Fijian Teams to AIMS.

Finally, a huge thanks to Jitesh Patel Ck's MEGA Bargain for supporting 3 of the schools to AIMS.

// Badminton Singles Competition at the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships is over - onto the Mixed Doubles //

Wed 9 Sep - Tauranga, NZ

After 2 days of ranking pool matches, today Abigail Corrie and Arohan Gogoi competed in their respective Finals Divisions of the Badminton Singles Competition of the 2026 AIMS Games, representing their respective schools - St Anne's and Drasa Avenue.

Arohan secured 1 victory before losing a tight 2nd match.

Abigail fared better winning 3 matches bowing out with a beaming smile in the Quarter Finals.

Tomorrow they enter the 2-day Mixed Doubles Competition with 5 matches.

Bula Spirit in Full Force at the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships ! 🇫🇯🏸🏉🏐

Out of 14,500 athletes competing in Tauranga this week, Team Fiji might be small in numbers—just 30 strong—but their support for one another is massive!

It started with a sweet gesture of solidarity: the Fiji Badminton team sharing daily cartons of oranges donated by Good Neighbour with the Gospel Primary Rugby 7s squad to keep their energy high on the field. 🍊💪

It was beautiful to see the distinctive rugby jerseys of Gospel which were donated Ck's MEGA Bargain who are also major supporters for Badminton.

By afternoon, the Gospel 7s team repaid the love in true Fiji fashion—turning up at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre in full force, bringing loud, inspiring cheers that lifted Arohan and Abigail straight through their badminton matches! 📣🏸✨

And the support train doesn't stop there. Today, the badminton crew is heading over to return the favor once again, cheering on the St. Anne’s Primary Netball Team—the school Abigail proudly represents. 🏐❤️

Extending our Fijian support to Badminton Cook Islands watching and cheering each others games.

With 30 athletes taking on 14,500, Team Fiji is proving that size doesn't define strength—unity does. Vinaka vakalevu to our young athletes for showing everyone at AIMS 2026 what community and mutual support are all about! 🇫🇯❤️

Superb opening of the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships in Tauranga,New Zealand. 4 Fijians schools: St Annes (Badminton and Netball), Gospel Primary (Rugby 7s), Stella Maris (Swimming), and Drasa Avenue School (Badminton).

// Intense training session for our 2 shuttlers at the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships //

The two 1st-time Fijian shuttlers at the 2026 AIMS Games in Tauranga, NZ got in an intensive 2.5 hour training session with Olympian Donald Koh (Singapore) at Tauranga Boys College.

Abigail Corrie (St Annes,Suva) and Arohan Gogoi (Drasa Avenue, Lautoka) trained with the Bay Of Plenty Badminton Development Squad. The BOP Coaches were quite impressed with the skill levels of both players who "only" took up the game earlier this year - all credit to our BWF Development & Shuttle Time Teachers and Badminton Oceania Foundation Coaches in Suva and Lautoka Badminton Club.

The Badminton Competition starts tomorrow Monday 7th September.

Abigail has 5 players in her Girls Singles pool with 2 matches tomorrow and 3 on Tuesday.

Arohan has 4 pool players with 2 games tomorrow and 2 on Tuesday.

They are paired as Mixed Doubles with 4 games on Thursday.

Wonderful photo of the 4 Fijian schools at the 2026 AIMS Games in Tauranga, New Zealand: St Annes, Gospel Primary School, Stella Maris, and Drasa Avenue School.

After the intensely moving powhiri, the Fijian Teams presented gifts to our Māori hosts and the rugby 7s boys of Gospel performed a spirited, modern meke.

It was then truly WONDERFUL to meet so many Fijians living in Tauranga who presented gift food packs for all the schools and invited us to a Fijian Community dinner and taralala on Friday night.

// Magnificent Māori traditional welcome for all the Fijian players at the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games School Sporting Championships //

Saturday 5 September, Tauranga, New Zealand

Today the 2 Fijian badminton players Abigail Corrie and Arohan Gogoi (and parents) joined all the other Fijian Teams from Stella Maris, Gospel Primary, and the St Annes Netball Team to be welcomed by the Tauranga tangata whenua (people of the land).

The Fijians gathered outside the Hall of Tauranga Intermediate and were approached by young warriors (toa) brandishing their wooden spears in slow deliberate movements.

They laid down their raki, silver fern leaf which was accepted by our young leader. The delegation were then led into the hall to a rapturous chorus (karanga) from the mass young women's group.

Part 2 follows with heart-shaking girls and boys chorus after each speech.

WINNING DOZEN at PRIMARY SCHOOL BADMINTON COMP

The inaugural badminton Primary School Tournament wrapped up mid week and this "fab dozen" are winners steeped in history. They will look back at 2026 and recall how they placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their respective categories.

Congratulations to the boys and girls U11 and U13 medallists; and special congratulations to all the athletes that participated. You turning up made this comp what it is ! Thanks for setting the bar!!

Whilst the team comps had Yat Sen top the boys and girls, the individuals (golds) was a mixed bag, showing the amazing and talented individuals spread across various schools. We also saw the Samoan So'o sisters taking home a bronze and silver for the U11 and U13 girls respectively.
