As a student of the martial arts you will be exposed to a lot of different techniques. In your Muay Thai, Savate, Kickboxing… striking the most important elements to focus on are 1) your stance and footwork 2) keep your hands up and chin down (defense) and 3) proper body mechanics to maximize your efficiency and effectiveness of your strikes. These three elements need to be focused on every time you train until they become second nature. If your stance and footwork is off you will be out of balance and have a weak structure. This will make both your offense and defense weak. If your basic defense is lacking, your hands down and chin/face is not covered, you will get hit, hurt and potentially knocked out. If you are are getting hit and out of balance you will not be confident throwing your own attacks. Lastly, if your body mechanics are off you will lack power in your striking. In addition, you will be inefficient in your movement and get fatigued faster. Once you are fatigued (gassed) everything starts to fall apart. It is essential that YOU hold yourself responsible for keeping a strong stance and structure, keep your hands up and chin down, and continually working to maximize your body mechanics. Your instructors will be there to remind you, but YOU have to be disciplined enough to work those core fundamental areas.
