Let's Meet: Timoci "Jimmy" Sulua
Journeys Beyond the Court
Quick Profile
📍 Name: Timoci Sulua
📍 Place of Origin: Suvavou Village (Vasu Soso, Naceva, Kadavu)
📍 Club: Redline Volleyball Club
📍 Position: Setter / Libero
Known to his friends simply as "Jimmy," Timoci Sulua is a humble and hardworking young man whose volleyball journey began with a dream inspired by some of Suvavou's finest volleyball players.
His love for the game started in 2014 while he was in Class 7. Growing up in Suvavou Village, Jimmy looked up to Fiji volleyball representatives Alipate Wikilifi and Serevi Vananalagi, both proud sons of his village. Watching them represent Fiji inspired him to believe that one day he too could achieve something special through volleyball.
While he enjoyed volleyball from a young age, Jimmy began taking the sport seriously when he joined Inner Circle Volleyball Club and started participating in local club competitions. Those early days on the court helped him develop his skills and strengthen his passion for the game.
Jimmy started his volleyball career as a Libero, learning the importance of defense, communication, and teamwork. As his understanding of the game grew, he transitioned into the role of setter, a position he now enjoys because it allows him to lead the team's attack.
In 2021, Jimmy joined Suva Volleyball through his Redline Volleyball Club. That same year, he earned selection to the Suva Whites Men's Team. Through his consistent performances and commitment to the sport, he was soon promoted to the Suva Blues Senior Men's Team, where he continues to represent Suva with pride today.
One of Jimmy's proudest moments in volleyball was helping Redline Volleyball Club win the Interclub Championship and being part of the Suva team that won the "Vulaca Championship" this year. These achievements remain special milestones in his journey and continue to motivate him to work harder.
For Jimmy, volleyball is much more than winning games and tournaments. The sport has taught him valuable life lessons about discipline and building strong friendships. His leadership qualities and commitment to his teammates have also seen him entrusted with the responsibility of Co-Captaining the Suva Blues Men's Team. A role that reflects the respect he has earned both on and off the court.
"The biggest lesson I have learned through volleyball is how to work together as a team and build good relationships with other players."
Advice to Young People on Drugs
Jimmy believes young people should focus on their future and make choices that will help them achieve their goals.
"Stay away from drugs because they will not take you to a better place. Focus on your future, work hard, and make positive choices."
Looking Ahead
Like many young athletes, Jimmy dreams of one day representing Fiji on the international stage. He understands that achieving that goal will require commitment, sacrifice, and hard work, but he remains determined to keep improving every day.
"My long-term plan is to continue training hard and hopefully earn selection into the Fiji national squad."
Jimmy's story is a reminder that every journey starts somewhere. From the village courts of Suvavou to the Suva Bluez Senior Men's Team, he continues to prove that perseverance, and a willingness to learn can take you a long way.
We wish Jimmy all the very best! Keep on keeping on...
