Heleina Young 🇫🇯 and Jenly Tegu Wini 🇸🇧 have both taken their turn in Glasgow. Here's what the scholarship behind them actually is.

A monthly payment from the IOC to an individual athlete, administered through their National Olympic Committee. Not a lump sum. Not prize money. Not tied to a result. It covers training, coaching, physiotherapy, equipment and the cost of reaching the competitions where qualification is decided.

Young is on the current programme, Olympic Scholarships for Athletes Los Angeles 2028, inside the Olympic Solidarity 2025-2028 Plan. She has said it pays for her travel, her physiotherapy and her physical wellbeing, and that those are the things she needs to reach the Los Angeles Games. Wini's dates from the Paris 2024 cycle, and it carried her through a fifth Commonwealth Games campaign at 43.

The programme is built for National Olympic Committees that send small delegations. Each can hold six individual scholarships, up from five last cycle. Fiji holds five.

Right now 1,516 athletes from 176 NOCs hold one, across 39 disciplines. At Paris 2024, scholarship-holders won 75 medals and took 131 diplomas.

The full Olympic Solidarity plan runs to USD 650 million over four years, with the athlete scholarship budget up 16 per cent on the last cycle.

Congratulations again to 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐲𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧 - 2025 IOC JEDI Champions Award recipient, Oceania

IOC President Kirsty Coventry presented the IOC Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Champions Award for Oceania to Robyn Cockburn, nominated by the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

More than 30 years of work sit behind this award - the Wahine Toa and Wahine Toa Oceania programmes, the ONOC Equity Commission, and safeguarding and inclusion practice across New Zealand and the Pacific.

In her own words: "This recognition is not mine alone. It reflects the collective effort of communities, organisations, and colleagues across Aotearoa and the wider Pacific, who are committed to making sport a place where everyone belongs."

𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 “𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞” 𝐊𝐨𝐡𝐧

The Oceania National Olympic Committees family is deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Kohn, Executive Assistant to the Secretary General and Team Leader of ONOC's continental funding programme.

Mike joined ONOC in August, 2013 and, over twelve years of devoted service, became a trusted and deeply respected member of our Olympic family. His dedication to the athletes and National Olympic Committees of the Pacific touched every corner of our region. Whether supporting Olympic Solidarity programmes, coordinating regional activities, assisting with General Assemblies and Games operations, or helping our NOCs access opportunities and resources, Mike approached every responsibility with quiet dedication and a genuine desire to serve others.

Those who knew Mike experienced firsthand his kindness, humility, strong work ethic, and willingness to go above and beyond whenever assistance was needed. He took great pride in working with athletes and in helping the National Olympic Committees of Oceania succeed. His warmth, humility and service embodied the Olympic spirit, and his professionalism, integrity and positive spirit earned him the respect and friendship of colleagues throughout our region and across the wider Olympic Movement.

Beyond his work, Mike was a devoted family man and a respected mentor within the sporting community, known for his quiet way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued. His legacy will live on through the friendships he built, the National Olympic Committees and athletes he supported, and the lasting contribution he made to sport in Oceania.

ONOC extends its heartfelt condolences to Mike's family, friends and colleagues, and joins the Oceania Olympic family in honouring his memory. We ask that the privacy of Mike's family be respected at this time.
