ONOC Vice President Emma Waiwai took an Oceania voice to Commonwealth Sports Ministers in Glasgow this July, with a clear message: sport has to genuinely belong to women and girls, in practice and not just in name.

She put four actions to ministers โ€” embed safeguarding and gender equality in sport policy and funding, back community sport, open leadership to women, and build on partnerships that already work.

Sep 15, 2026 | ONOC Vice President Emma Waiwai carried an Oceania and Pacific voice to the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in Glasgow on 22 July 2026, calling for sport to be used more deliberately as a platform for gender equality, safeguarding, leadership and positive social change.

Fiji's Matelita Buadromo is one of six athletes named IOC Believe in Sport Ambassadors for the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, and the only one from Oceania.

Believe in Sport is the IOC campaign against competition manipulation, which is when athletes deliberately underperform or lose, or officials make wrong calls on purpose. In Dakar, the ambassadors will sit down with young athletes and their coaches and families to talk about how an approach happens and where to report it.

Buadromo swam for Fiji at London 2012 and Rio 2016. She has been working on competition manipulation since 2022, and her ambassador calendar runs through Dakar, the Pacific Games Tahiti 2027 and LA28.

"The beauty of sport is its unpredictability and fairness.โ€

Around 2,700 young athletes will compete in Dakar from 31 October to 13 November, the first Olympic sports event held on African soil.
