(Just if you haven't noticed our Finland - France Pre-Match article)

When Bernd Heynemann blew the whistle, on 11th October 1997, to end the game between Finland and Hungary, people broke into tears. Joyful moments for Hungarians who qualified for the play-offs, and sorrow and disappointment for Finns who strongly believed that Finland would finally participate in the playoffs for the 1998 World Cup.

A win was what the Finnish men's team needed, to qualify for the playoffs. At the end of 90 minutes, the official time, Finland was leading (with a 1-0). Then ta malediction hits the Finnish side during the injury time. A ball cleared from the goalline hit the Finnish goalkeeper Teuvo Moilanen in the back and rolled into the net.

In the middle of that disarray, Heynemann blew the final whistle. Finland stayed home, to watch France win and lift their first world cup trophy, the following year.
