🔥 WHY TO BE #1 GOALIE YOU MUST FIND YOUR INNER ROCK STAR?

I think starting goalie at any age must find their inner rock star or otherwise you will be crushed.

I grew up being the #1 guy and played as #1 most of my career. Based on my personal experience you can’t be ”normal” person to be the #1 goalie, you gotta be a rock star.

🦦 Why?

Just to handle pressure of the team, everyone having opinion about you and your performance at the rink (often negative) and constantly having to get over mistakes that you can’t blame anyone for takes different level of mental strength than being 3rd line forward or a normal office worker. Then add packed rinks where thousands of people are chanting your name (or USA every time you make a save), media, money and your family’s mortage payment depending your performance which adds another layer of pressure.

I have seen among little kids when everyone gets to try being a goalie that some kids can’t handle even a one practice being a goalie.

Here is a quick sample about being the rock star: When you are 1 guy you must have strong voice to communicate. To be loud on the ice requires certain character. In military I noticed that some guys were too afraid of being loud enough to hear them over a gun fire. As a goalie you can’t be intimitated using your voice and leading the defence (this can be practiced).

🔥 How being the rock star shows by actions?

Here are some samples:
🗿You get over mistakes within 1-3 seconds or even faster.

🗿You compliment your teammate for scoring on you with a good shot.

🗿You challenge your teammates for competitions.

🗿You lead with example of training better and more than others.

🗿You show appreciation to people around you.

🗿 When it is game time you are the lead singer on the ice (what ever that means to you).

I make rock star goalies.

🔥 3 TIPS FOR BETTER MOVEMENT:

🔥 ADVICE 1:
In bad angle plays with back door pass option you can cheat with legs but in keep upper body square to the puck.

🔥 ADVICE 3:
For counter slide you must keep body tight like you’d when doing heavy trap bar lift.

🔥 ADVICE 3:
Often it is your gear that doesn’t allow you to move. For example this is for sure way to make your slides bad:

👉 skates laced all the way up (leave highest or second highest loop open)
👉 tight toe tie. For example I don’t know how Warrior pad original toe tie could pass any design testing. (Use as long skate lace as possible and forget all bungee options)
👉 Some excuse for dull skates or sharpening them too flat. (Make sure your skates are sharp.)
