Henkilökunta esittelyssä Lina Nyberg.
Kasvatustieteiden maisteri, ratsastuksenohjaaja, mindfulness- ja tunnetaito- ohjaaja.
2. Lempihevoset? Edesmennyt hevoseni Mädde ja kaikki opetushevoset ovat ihania.
3. Kuinka kauan olet työskennellyt Enjalan tallilla. 9 v. Tällä hetkellä leipätyöni on muualla, m***a noin kerran kuussa saan tulla nauttimaan ratsastuksen opettamisesta. 4. Harrastukset? Ratsastuksen lisäksi tykkään liikkua monipuolisesti, esimerkiksi ulkoilla koirani kanssa, pelata sulkapalloa tyttäreni kanssa ja lukea. 5. Vahvuudet? Myönteisyys, perusteellisuus ja psykologisesti turvallisen oppimisympäristön luominen.

Reward training is very effective because it tells the horse what you do want. Let’s use the example of training your horse to stand still at the mounting block.

If you give your horse a scratch at the wither or a piece of carrot when he stands still at the mounting block, you are using reward training because you are adding something that he likes.

Reward training is also called positive reinforcement because you are adding something the horse likes, when he does something you wanted him to do, that you want him to do again. In training talk, the word 'positive' is used in a mathematical way to refer to something being added (not the thing necessarily being good).

Positive punishment, then, is adding something the horse does not like when he does something you did not want him to do, such as jerking on the reins when he moves away from the mounting block.

Punishment is not a very effective teaching tool because it tells the horse what you do not want him to do, but not what you do want him to do. It can confuse him and cause more problems. In our example, it could make your horse fearful of you or the mounting block, which will make him even less likely to stand still.

On the other hand, the positive reinforcement of reward training provides the clear communication and pleasurable experiences that your horse needs to feel safe and therefore be safer to ride. And that's more fun for everyone!

It isn’t always possible to reward your horse with food, but he will probably enjoy a scratch at his withers or another favourite spot. If you do use food rewards, you should feed them on an open, flat palm.

// Training Tip Tuesday - Ruling out pain//

Before any analysis of problem horse behaviour, it’s important to investigate other possible causes such as pain. The science of recognising facial signs of pain is still in its infancy, despite the claims of many authors. Much of the problem arises because of the huge variation between horses in the facial characteristics as well as differences in behavioural traits and temperaments.

The diagram above shows the generalised understanding of how pain might present itself.

However, it’s important to recognise that pain and stress have similar characteristics in animals. The characteristics of pain in the above diagram may alternatively suggest stress resulting from conflict behaviour, or any other stress induced by human interactions.

Therefore, when assessing problem behaviour you should also rely on first principles and pattern recognition, include the signs and symptoms of the problematic behaviour.

For example, in the case of a horse that doesn’t stand still when being saddled, as well as facial signs of pain/stress, you should also consider:
• Dysfunctions in in-hand training
• Prior negative associations with saddling,
• sensitivity levels and preferences
• predictability of the actions being done
• familiarity of the human
• confidence to separate from social partners

This diagram is illustrated by Karina Bech Gleerup, research paper: an equine pain face’ and Horses and People Magazine.

Lina Nyberg will close our six hours livestream event with her presentation "How to Support Rider's Motivation & Learning as a Riding Teacher"

Motivation is the driving force and quality that elicit behaviour. For riding teachers and coaches, it is helpful to understand the possible reasons behind rider's actions (or non-actions) and the connection to the social environment, such as the yard culture and teaching/coaching style.

The aim of the presentation is to outline relevant research on motivation, learning, and equestrianism, and illustrate how you can apply this knowledge to the benefit of your teaching, and rider's learning.

Lina Nyberg is a Riding Teacher, Mindfulness & Emotional Skills Coach and a MSc Student in Educational Science

Lina's presentation "How to Support Rider's Motivation & Learning as a Riding Teacher" will start at 7.00pm CET/2.00pm EST and will include an open question-and-answer session.

This session covers just one of many captivating topics featured at the 2022 Centered Riding® Virtual Symposium. The Symposium will be live from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CET / 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, November 5, 2022.

And that's not all! Many more educational videos from international educators in equestrian sport will be available for you to watch on demand throughout the month of November, in addition to recordings of the live sessions.

Just because you've always done something a particular way, doesn't mean you always have to.

Changing how you do something doesn't mean you were wrong, it just means that you learnt more. That's why it's OK to say "I used to do/teach/train like..."

Sometimes change can be hard, but that's how we all get better at what we do and we all want to do our best for horses.

What is something you are proud to say you used to do like 'that', but you now do like 'this'?
