There are a variety of ways and channels to follow race coverage these days, too many to keep track of sometimes.

If you want an easy way to follow the upcoming Endless Mountains race in Vermont, there will be a new option - an in-race podcast by the hosts Rootstock Racing.

They are taking over the The Dark Zone: An Adventure Racing Podcast during the event, starting June 22nd, while regular host Brian Gatens is competing.

It's something never tried before and busy race followers will have the option to listen in while commuting or out training.

There are very few races that have been running since 1999, and the Gold Rush Adventure Race in California is one of them.

Now it's time for a new Race Director and to re-invent a classic event, so Greg Callas is planning a 12 hour course in San Franciso Bay. (Long ago the race was one of the early ARWS Qualfiers and this year will be part of Adventure Racing World Series - North America Region.)

The race will have iconic views and be accessible to both experienced and new racers. Read all about it in our race preview below.

There was a dramatic finish to Malacara Race.

The winners were the Tactical Foodpack team from Estonia and Switzerland. Given they were racing in the hot and humid conditions of the Amazon it was a very impressive win.

They only took the lead on the final stage after Kailas Fuga (formerly Brazil Multisport) suffered a penalty.

The top Brazilian team had lead for the whole race, but had to wait out a 2 hour penalty at the last TA, and it cost them the race. Tactical Foodpack were in close pursuit only an hour behind and the final stage was a 9km packraft.

The race uses a system where teams must take a photo to validate a checkpoint, and the two cameras Kailas Fuja had taken both failed. One had no battery power, the other a technical failure ... which is not surprising after 3 days in wet Amazonian conditions.

So they used their emergency phone to take the pictures, incurred the penalty, and lost the race and the ARWC place that went with it.

It's never over until you cross the finish line in an expedition race, and the management of every piece of equipment matters.

Tactical Foodpack had a great race and took their chance after one crucial mistake by Kailas Fuga. If only they've packed an extra camera battery ...

Tragic news has come from Nepal, where Shelley Johannesen, a well known US racer, has died in an avalanche while descending Makalu after a successful summit climb.

Her partner David Ashley was rescued and flown to hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.

The pair competed together at many races in the US and internationally. They travelled extensively and spent much of their time organising climbing trips with their company DASH Adventures.

SleepMonsters followed their attempt to summit Everest around this time last year.

It's a sad day for the adventure racing community and our thoughts are with Shelley and David's family and friends.

The slide caught four people at around 7,000m as they were coming down from the summit. Rescuers unburied three but could not help Shelley Johannesen, 59.

Malacara Race in Brazil had a spectacular start with a paddling stage on the huge expanse of the Rio Negro, close to it's confluence with the Amazon.

Then came a long bike stage (126km) where teams were hampered by very wet weather overnight, before another, much more remote, paddle stage. The organisers promised teams water, water everywhere ... and that is what they are getting.

After a great contest with NonstopAdventure.pl it was the Estonian team Onnevalem who won at Rajd Beskidy. The win secures them a place at the European champs at the Montane Adventure Race in Denmark.

It's the opening day of the Malacara Race with teams gathering in Manaus for a sports festival on the waterfront ... then it's time to set off on a 500km course in the amazon.

Expect slow progress, lots of water, and some animal encounters.

Rajd Beskidy always packs in more variety than any other race and they've even found a small desert to put checkpoints in. Top rope climbing and caving are also on the route for the stage are currently tackling.
