After a successful altitude training camp in Flagstaff USA, Tim has been competing in his first races of 2022.
His Koovee team came 7th place at 10Mila.
At the World Orienteering Championships 2022 Denmark test races, Tim won the individual sprint race and finished 4th in the KO sprint final.
A week later, Tim laced up his spikes and ran a huge 5000m PB of 14:01.44 held at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium (inspired by Dick Quax' 1977 5000m world record of 13.12 run on the same track) Tim is motivated to have another crack at breaking 14 minutes later in the season.

But now the focus turns back to orienteering for the first World Cup round in Borås, Sweden beginning on Thursday. The NZ team also includes WOC debutantes Penelope Salmon and Lynch

Orienteering Season Finale in the fantastic setting of Cansiglio, Italy.
Tim's World Cup #3 was a mixture of results...
The Long distance was going well until 1 hour 20 mins when Tim had the same problem as in WOC long - when the gels did not agree with his stomach 🤢 so he faded for the final loop to 43rd. The Middle race was a scrappy run with 3 big errors 😫 Tim did get the chance to work on prototypes for nettle sting reducing sports gear.
The Sprint Relay was a chance to redeem the previous two races -Tim & Toby formed a composite team with Ukraine & Russia. Olena Babych 🇺🇦 ran a great 1st leg handing over in 10th place, 32 seconds off the leaders. Tim pulled the team up to 3rd position, only 14 seconds off the leaders. Toby came through in 17th & unfortunately Kseniia Penzina 🇷🇺 had a mp, so their Mixed Team didn't post a final time. However it is always fun to get the opportunity to race this format.
So this World Cup Sprint Relay effort & WOC21 Sprint Bronze will help keep Tim motivated over the off season before finally getting the chance to compete in the first Sprint WOC - Denmark 20/22.

Brutal Middle Distance – 42nd place
Comments from postrace interview, “I had a big mistake to #3 & ended up on the wrong hill & didn’t understand the map there, I felt like I had to stand still to work out where I was…from there I tried to get back into a rhythm but I was struggling physically and at the end of the course, in this terrain, I couldn’t push anymore. I was walking up the hills! It was a brutal course!”
Tim was pleased to qualify for the middle final and is looking forward to two easy days before the long distance.
