It's been a while since the last update in spring, and I've been meaning to get to it, to write a wrap-up of last season and reflect a bit. The spring was pretty hectic time, with some uncertainty about who is training where and doing what for the next season hanging out in the air until June, and since then I've been meaning to get to it day after day, but seems like once you lose pace writing is difficult.
For whoever hasn't heard through the grapevine or via publications, I have entered into a contract with SSF, and will be coaching the girls 2018 project team, where Nella now joins 5 other girls for a full program. Eetu will be joining the men's technical team and Joona with Ruka Alpine Gymnasium, while preparing for the season in fall with the speed team. All this has taken a bit of hammering for all pieces of the puzzle to find their right places, but in the end I'm very confident that all the athletes are joining strong programs to continue their development, each on a slightly different path.
From my part, last season has been incredibly heavy, while at the same time very rewarding. Counting back, I think I traveled a total of 197 days, with the athletes traveling only slightly less. We raced in total in 7 different countries, and I believe our trusted Kajon van drove us around for a good 60-70 thousand kilometers to reach our destinations. While the sport is volatile and disappointment is always a big part of it, I can say with pride for all of my athletes that we did indeed have some incredible success, with (off my memory) 7 national championships and 13 medals altogether. Several victories at the children's international events and all around solid performances.
I am especially happy with the way we were able to improve the quality of speed skiing, and bring it much closer to the level of results of technical events from the previous years. This all considering we went into the season with entirely new setup, where nothing really was tried and tested other than the co-operation of the team. It's felt like quite a journey considering it was only 10 to 11 months with this setup.
In the end I would like to thank everyone who participated to make it possible, sponsors, parents and of course first and foremost the athletes who worked hard, and I do hope will continue working with similar intensity.
