Nervous in Competition?

Nervousness is a natural part of Disc Golf. Nervousness itself does not prevent you from performing well. What matters is how you respond to it and how well you can regulate it.

Nervousness starts to affect performance when it becomes negative and turns into anxiety. In those moments, the situation can suddenly feel too big, and your thoughts can pull you away from the performance.

Learning to regulate nervousness means learning to manage:

→ Your emotions
→ Stress
→ Your focus of attention
→ Your thoughts

The goal is not to get rid of nervousness.
The goal is to learn how to use it.

Check The Fundamentals of Mental Skills for Disc Golfers! The focus there is not on driving distance or putting technique. Instead, we strengthen the game that happens inside your head when you stand on the tee, prepare for a throw, walk to your disc, plan your next move, and get ready to finish the hole with an important putt.

This text was inspired by a few YouTube videos I’ve watched recently. They got me thinking about how skills are generally taught and what role a coach actually has in that process.

If you coach disc golf and care about how your athletes learn, I encourage you to give this a thoughtful read. If something catches your interest, you can also dive deeper into the references.

Every now and then, it’s worth stopping and asking yourself:

Why do I coach the way I do?
What am I actually trying to achieve with this way?
And why am I trying to achieve it in this particular way?

In a backhand throw, shoulder movement begins before elbow and wrist movement, but the shoulder’s peak angular velocity occurs later than the peak angular velocities of elbow extension and wrist extension. Thus, the timing of peak angular velocities does not strictly follow a proximal-to-distal sequence, even though the movement is initiated proximally.

What you think? Why it could be like that?

There’s still a lot to explore when it comes to evidence-based skill training.

While DG specific research is important, there’s already research on skill acquisition and practice in general. Example golf studies can provide great examples of how these principles can be applied in practice.

Work ahead!!

This is a quick demonstration of what percentages of max disc speed are possible when throwing from a box with feet off the ground. This limits pelvis turn and lower body production significantly. As you can see, the majority of disc speed is still available, further supporting the claims from .disc.golf 🤝🥏

I tried to strap myself to the bench with resistance bands as securely as I could, but if I’m able to move around on the bench, some of the force gets lost through my core.

Hypothesis is that I might be able to get slightly higher readings if I were properly secured to the bench.

If someone has that type of chair please test it!
