EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - WOMEN'S FINAL
Laura Asadauskaitė from Šiuolaikinė penkiakovė / Modern Pentathlon Lithuania won women's final at the European Championships in Sofia. Second place was taken by Gulnaz Gubaydullina from Russia and third by İlke Özyüksel from Türkiye Modern Pentatlon Federasyonu. In team classification Lithuania won ahead of Pentathlon GB and Russia.
Fencing ranking round was won by Katsiaryna Arol, who claimed 28 wins on a piste. Second place was taken by her teammate Volha Silkina with 26 victories, while in third position Laura Asadauskaite was classified as she beat 25 rivals.
In swimming the fastest was Gulnaz Gubaydullina – with the time of 2:08,55 she was 1,34 secs faster than Samantha Murray and 3,54 secs faster than Alice Sotero. The Russian took the overall lead with Arol and Silkina behind her.
Fencing bonus round brought a change in the order of the top three – Silkina won both her bouts gaining two points, which she needed to overtake her compatriot, who fell down to third place. The lead was kept by Gubaydullina despite her loss in her bout.
In riding three athletes achieved the maximum result of 300 points. One of them was Arol, who thanks to that took the lead, ahead of Gubaydullina. The Russian and Francesca Tognetti, who went up to third place, had both one knockdown.
At the start of the combined event Arol had two seconds of advantage over Gubaydullina and 21 over Tognetti. It was however none of them, who took the gold medal, but starting fifth with 34 seconds of loss Asadauskaite, who proved that she’s in a shape that might let her defend the Olympic gold in more than month in Rio de Janeiro. Second place was taken by Gubaydullina, while third by Ilke Özyüksel, who started 19th to the final event of the day.
The team classification was won by Lithuanians Laura Asadauskaite, Gintare Venckauskaite and Karolina Guzauskaite. Second place was taken by Brits Joanna Muir, Kate French and Samantha Murray while third by Russians Gulnaz Gubaydullina, Anastasia Petrova and Anna Buriak.
