Aikido is a modern defensive Japanese martial art, that was develped by "Morihei Ueshiba" or "Ōsensei" (the great teacher). He developed Aikido as a result of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs. Aikido is translated as "The way of unifying with life energy or Ki" or as "The way of harmonious spirit". Ōsensei's goal was to develop an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves, while keeping their attacker from injury.
