Battle of the Swans during Antigua Sailing Week. Swan 65 "Ilios and Swan 51 "Eira" close hauled during last day. This time we ended up on a solid third place to the delight of the crew. We also met two migrating humpbacks heading north passing us at close range (video). See you next year in Antigua!

Last week we got a few items from last years ARC handed to us since we missed the prize ceremony… a small plate perfect for cookies and a pint big enough for a French bier. They underline the fact that the journey is the most important thing!

Have you seen the TV format "Over the Atlantic"? It's a show where a bunch of celebrities sign up for an Atlantic crossing on a sailing yacht.

During their voyage they encounter all kinds of personal and other problems. It's a bold reality TV format where people feel physically sick until they vomit and bruise themselves to the extent the show almost turns into a masochistic display of self torment. Watching it makes you wonder why people make such decisions, to hop onboard on a voyage so hard and demanding?

The explanation reveals itself when the program progress and usually by the time of final crew statements you can see a complete transformation of mindset and many participants express their emotions and gratitude on the time spent out on the ocean.

What is then the thrill of doing an ocean crossing? Is it the adventure? Is it the appetite to push your own boundaries? Is it because of the sailing aesthetics? Maybe it can be the wildlife experience? Perhaps it's the camaraderie and the fact that in a tight spot you usually became really close to your crew and make friends for life?

In our mind it's ALL of the reasons mentioned. It's just an overwhelming experience that change you and a day or so of seasickness is not going to make much of a difference.

All that said an ocean is a hostile place for us land based mammals. If you are not prepared and have the necessary skills and equipment it will kill you. You need a good boat, a reliable skipper with good leadership skills and an extensive kit of aid, both for safety, communication, navigation and more.

During our many years out on the ocean we have seen the most. Good boats with good skippers, bad boats with bad skippers and everything in between. It's not very recommendable to join a boat without knowing it has the properties of a solid ocean going vessel, or if you don't know the skipper and/or the owner. There has been many cases when interests don't meet or the setup is wrong for the whole journey. These are things that shouldn't be taken lighthearted and might lead into life threatening situations.

After 14 ocean crossings with Eira we possess the relevant skills to make a trip across an ocean. If you think you are up for a TransAt voyage and believe you have the stomach and social skills for it you might be the one we are looking for our Antigua - Portugal West to East crossing in May. What we offer is a solid run operation and a good boat to minimise risks and bring about tons of experience needed out there. Don't hesitate to drop us a line and ask more.

The itinerary for the trip:

This is the trip of your life. The southern trade wind routes have very little to do with the northern route back to Europe and you can prepare to meet the wild forces of nature. We have done it many times and every single trip jumps out of the script to become something of its own. The weather can....

Greetings from a crisp autumn morning in Helsinki!

We are, yet again, moving towards the darker time of the year up north and if you have your thoughts on a trip to lower latitudes during winter we have a few suggestions for you!

Eira is spending another winter in the Caribbean and we have a nice program in store for anyone up for some fun on the water.

If you are interested in racing there is a wide variety of events to join. We also have a few trips for the ultimate vacation as well as our usual line-up of ocean sailing.

In 2026 we are also back in Porto Cervo racing the Rolex Swan Cup. This event is for all purists of sailing aesthetics and Swan racing aficionados.

For adrenaline:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/rorc-caribbean-600-2025/

The Caribbean 600 is probably one of the hottest races in the world right now. With a challenging race course, fantastic scenery and the warm climate no wonder so many have it on their bucket list.

https://swan51eira.com/tour/antigua-racing-cup-7-9-of-april-2026/

Antigua Racing Cup is the new kid in town. The organisers of Antigua Sailing Week have decided to divide the event into two different, this one being the hardcore round the cans version. We have done this for years and there is definitely more than one reason for it.

For fun racing under the sun:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/antigua-classic-yacht-regatta-2026/

The Antigua Classic Regatta is pure eye candy for the sailing entusiasts. Everything from large schooners to modern classics litter the race course outside English Harbour. If you consider sailing as the ultimate gentlemen's sport this is something for you!

https://swan51eira.com/tour/antigua-sailing-week-2025/

Antigua Sailing Week has taken a leap back to it's roots re-introducing this point to point racing event. With an everyday change of race destination you should get a good view of Antigua with surroundings and we sense the race also have a strong social side. Hop on and mingle with the sailing community spending their winter in the West - Indies in 2026!

For ultimate class and panache:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/rolex-swan-cup-sardinia-2026/

After years of absence we are racing in Sardinia again. This one is not a part of our Caribbean tour but we include it in the list on its own right as one of the classiest sailing events on the planet. What can be more satisfying to a hundred or so Swans competing in the waters of the Maddalena Archipelago, The grace of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club and the camaraderie of the Swan family?

For relaxation and vacation:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/christmas-cruise-st-lucia-st-vincent-grenadines-2025/

How about Christmas in the Grenadines? Bail out from a hectic Christmas and dip your toes in the warm sand and water of the Grenadines, the ultimate get-away from all stress.

You can do Christmas and New Year in a row also signing up for:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/caribbean-christmasnew-year-cruise-to-the-grenadines-21-12-2-1-2025/

Of course both work well separately as well. The New Years Cruise end in Antigua and is leaned a little more towards sailing. Enjoy the good food and beauty of the French Islands of Martinique, Guadalupe, Iles Des Saintes and the roughness and nature of Dominica. This one has a little bit of something for every taste.

Finally for those who want to get the ultimate sailing experience:

https://swan51eira.com/tour/atlantic-crossing-caribbean-europe-2025/

This is a true blue water ocean crossing - The TransAtlantic West to East. Of all events we have to offer this is the one that sticks out in every sense. It's a long sea voyage, a once in a lifetime experience, the pinnacle of a long life of sailing culminating in a potentially life changing experience. You won't be able to tell about this at home, the only ones to understand it will be the ones you have on your side on the boat out there on the ocean.

Moving around with a yacht takes you sometimes to places off the beaten track. Many of us know the North Western landmark of Brittany, Ile D’Ouessant or Ushant in English, but not many have actually been there. Here are some rare pics of Eira at the anchorage and the peaceful surroundings.
