While hovering somewhere in between cameras and continents I find it topical to fill the gap with trying out how some of my personal all time favourite images would do in B&W edit..
Here is a few from Malta when I was still shooting mainly with my GoPro Black Hero 4 or 5…
I don’t really understand B&W photography at all? I just think some pics look better without any colour and usually I find my self trying to save an image that has a great composition but sh*tty colours just by pushing the B&W button on my device. But I never gone out to try to capture a B&W photo on porpouse, perhaps I should try… wrecks look cool from a distance in different shades of gray.
Tell me what you think of these and if you understand B&W photo/edit, please leave a note how to improve.

Last six days I’ve been shadowing Kiss Rebreathers Training Director Patrick Widmann conducting the first Sidewinder mCCR course here in Finland 🇫🇮
This was my first assist toward my Sidewinder instructor rating. After being a ccr instructor for ”more complex rebreather” for a few years allready, my confidence toward my knowledge was fairly high. Well what did I knew.. after the first day listening the detailed, real life inspired, lessons from what supposed to be the basic topics, my confidence took a good beating and suddenly my feet were very steady back on the ground. Few days in to the course and massive amount of notes later I started to get my head in the game again and realised that to be the best version of my self as an ccr instructor this injection of fresh information and attitude delivered by far one of the most inspiring cave explorer was just what I needed. I hate theory and am scared failure but pushing your self out side of your comfort zone is extremely rewarding and this was no exeption.
The boys got certified flying scores, no surprise there, and I continue my journey toward my goal starting again tomorrow but this time in Montola mine.
This pic is from the certifying dive today. Congrats gents for your hard earned Kiss Sidewinder Mod 1 certs and thank you Patrick for coming all the way here to put me down and lift me up! 😂 Like we tend to say in these kind of situations; SUOMI VIINA! 🇫🇮

My absolute favourite from last year!
This is from our summer cabin, in Turku archipelago, where we spent our 2 week qarantine on arrival to Finland after leaving our home in Thailand last May.
This reminds me of the positive side of the changes we are witnessing everywhere at the moment and that there is adventure all around us if we just take a look close enough.
Learning the voices and names of the forest birds is as new to Isla as it is to me to pass this knowledge forward to the next generation for the first time.
Hopefully there will be more moments like this to share for all of us in our new future and for the time being, please enjoy the little adventures we got around us in this very moment.
🇫🇮

Today is Randy Thorntons birthday and I went through some old photos we took few years back in Malta and found these two gems.
Such a good memories that I couldn’t help sharing these images not only on Randys timeline but also on mine.
In the pic we are diving the Schnellboot S-31 in Malta with a very special group of elite divers, Randy being one of them.
I can’t really tell who he is in the photos because they all look the same flying rebreathers that Randy and the good people at and have designed them selves.
Happy Birthday mate and thank’s for the good excuse to show some old pics!

Today is a and by posting one you can win some cool prizes!
Here is my very personal encounter with a 20 ton Bryde’s whale.
This encounter happened all ready 6 years ago but I can still remember the giant whale eye balling me from just a few inches away again and again one aproach after another.

That day we were 16 nautical miles north west out from Koh Tao island in Thailand exploring a ship wreck called Torpedo with a team of tech divers from my dive center, Koh Tao Divers.
We had two nice dives on the wreck and I was the last one in the water tying off our dive boat from the wreck at 52 meters gaining a fair amount of deco while doing it.
The viz was perfect, around 30 meters, that day and I was ascending to 9m decompression stop when out of the blue comes this weird shape directly toward me.
It’s amazing how your mind can start playing tricks on you when you are hanging all alone in the big ocean.
Before I understood what it really was my imagination went through Great White, Killer whale or a Cambodian submarine but when I finally swam away from getting eaten by it and saw a bit of its side and the horisontal back fin I realized what I was looking at.
I had never seen a 20 ton whale this close in my life, the back fin literrally touched my dreadlocks when I was staring her enourmous body passing by my eyes. The look in her eye was so humain that I could swear that it belong to an old wise spirit who has a lot to teach us about surviving and living along with nature.
The Bryde’s whales around this area usually keep their distance and you are lucky if you spot one from the surface but this one was behaving way different.
The whale kept coming back to me again and again and times I had to push her away to avoid getting hammered by her massive body. We continued that dance for about half an hour until my deco was done and I started to get a feeling that maybe it would be better for me to just crawl back to the boat where I belong and let this gentle giant move on in her own element minding her own businnesses.. Luckily I had my with me that day and managed to snap this selfie from the encounter.

Couple of words about my office..
It is only about 0,1 m3 in size and the only window is made from tempered glass and is the size of a cell phone but the location is ever changing and the scenery can be stunning. It doesn’t have wi-fi in it but I have figured how to communicate with my neighbours using hand signals. It’s not a rental unit eighter.. 😉
Actually we designed it together with Ursuit’s designer Linda Granberg to match my needs in my line of work. Nothing crazy but little details like the upper arm pocket where I carry some cableties and a card size multitool for in water equipment failures. Another feature is the Molle system for attaching pockets from Ursuit’s military and rescue suits. It allowes me to add on different compartments and move my pockets around or, like in this case, leave them off.
In the lower arms we added 4mm bungee zig zagging so that I can quickly clip my cameras, lights, spools, wetnotes or arrows etc. temporary out of the way between tasks.
The colouring is just something that stands out from the black a bit but the material it self is a secret weapon that we are still testing...👀
I really appriciate the fact that Ursuit let me have a say in the detail and am pretty sure they’d do the same with you if ask politely enough? 😅

I still remember the time before I got hooked in to mine diving and when I was listening to my mate going all exited about a rusty wheel barrel somewhere in a depths of a flooded mine??
First of all mines are man made so plenty people been in there and even before they were flooded (very smart🙂) and secondly the rusty wheel barrel ain’t got any historical value what so ever, if you want one you can get them from K-Rauta or any other place with much more easy acces.
Still my mate was so exited about the dive to the wheel barrel and back that it made me wonder that the way to the barrel and back must be pretty awesome if some are willing to risk their poor lives just getting there and back? What did I know, I was hooked that moment and still, meny unforgettable moments in the rusty caves later, a wheel barrel will always be a wheel barrel but the way to it and back makes it very a special one and it becomes ”The Wheel Barrel” 😎
In a nut shell, mine diving is all about barrels and ladders and their value actually goes up and they get a whole new meaning when left alone in the depths.
Here is to all happy wheel barrels and other junk that got a whole new life after the mine owners unplugged their pumps!

There is always a first time for everything. This time for me it was diving the Kaatiala mine, Finland.🇫🇮
Kaatiala is propably one of the most commonly dived mine here and there is a good reason for that. Easy acces, great visibility, recreational depths but also some tunnels to peak into. As a cherry on top there is a great place to fill your tanks, eat and sleep in a family run resort with all you need for your visit in the area.
This photo was taken right out side the tunnels where there is this old car wreckage at about 30 meters. Next to the wreck you can see ”Freddi” hovering with his SF2 eCCR.

Modelling in diving photos must be one of the most under rated tasks to do right after the light guy who won’t even show in the final image. Yet both of these tasks demand quite often even more precise buoyancy control, finning techniques and trim than the guy behind the camera.

Whilist trying to hover motionless in a smallest crack of the cave, where one movement can lift up the silt and destroy the whole set up for the entire team, you must be tip top with all your gear and hold that pose for a full eternety while the camera man is trying different angles.

Those who dive know that being still is the hardest thing in our weightless world.
How do I know all of this?
Because it is me usually behind the camera but here I am trying to stay still in front of it...
Good job from the light guy and the photographer !
