The history of Turku Black Sox goes back to the summer of 2011. It started out with a couple of guys just throwing the ball around and talking baseball. Pretty soon new people joined the group, and there were more or less familiar faces gathering every week at the park, just to try out an actual baseball glove or how to hit a pitch that's coming straight at you. In the winter of 2011 a few of the
most active people decided to make a real thing out of this. The team was registered as Turun Baseball Kerho ry and the goal was to play in the Suomi-sarja as early as the next summer. The team got bags full of bats, gloves and balls as well as an introduction to baseball in Finland. Even though the schedule was tight, the team was lucky enough to get the necessary amount of active players during the spring, and was able to participate in the Suomi-sarja in the summer of 2012. We travelled to Helsinki and played our first game in the beginning of the summer. The numbers were pretty rough during the whole season, as we were far from the level needed in the Suomi-sarja. In 2013 we started to practice different aspects of the game more thoroughly and started the season with a whole new level of confidence. The team was eager to win the whole league, but we finished 4th out of 7 teams. It wasn't exactly what we'd hoped for, but it surely was a great leap forward. This year 2021 our goal is no other than to win the Fat Lizard League. We've had regular practices during the winter as much as Covid-19 situation has allowed us to practice and we feel extremely prepared and confident going in to the upcoming season. Turku Black Sox is always interested in new active members. Keep in mind that we are an amateur baseball team in Finland, so you don't have to be an MLB veteran to join us. Come and try out the exciting sport of baseball to one of our practices. Who knows, maybe this is just the thing for you? You can ask for training schedules here on our page.
