I wasn’t expecting it…
Not yet, not now.
I was expecting big initiations, life lessons and identity shifts when baby arrived sure, but I didn’t expect them to arise so early in pregnancy.
With such intense and sudden changes I often felt alone, I felt like it was just me and maybe others were just dealing with it better.
Now while some pregnancies are lighter and easier, the more I spoke to mamas I found that there was this overarching pressure to paint everything with a positive light:
¨Im struggling…. But I’m so grateful¨
¨I feel so emotional and overwhelmed but Im sure it will pass¨
¨I have insomnia, I haven’t slept in weeks, but i’ll survive¨
¨Things have changed with my partner, but I guess that’s normal¨
This subtle undermining of our experience can make us feel like we aren’t doing it right, not coping as good as others and feeling more alone.
Once I started having honest conversations with mamas feeling the same way, it began to lighten.
We began to share the truth, with all the highs and all the lows. And give ourselves full permission to allow all of it. We finally felt understood and supported.
