This extinct volcanic crater, marked by three jagged rocks breaking the surface, hides towering pinnacles and powerful currents beneath. These shifting waters bring extraordinary marine life — from schooling fish to hammerhead sharks — but they also test every diver’s skill.

To dive here, you need experience: at least 25 logged dives and a recent dive within the past year. Gordon Rocks demands respect — but rewards you with some of the most spectacular encounters in the ocean.

Meet the Chocolate Chip Sea Star (Nidorellia armata) — a reef dweller that’s as fascinating as its name. ⭐

Those dark “chips” aren’t decoration — they’re hard, calcified armor that deter predators. Like all sea stars, it moves with thousands of tiny tube feet on the underside of its arms. But rather than suction, these feet use sticky secretions to grip rock surfaces with surprising strength — even against strong currents.

Slowly grazing across the reef, this sea star plays a small but vital role in the ecosystem’s balance.

A Mola Mola! 🌊 The ocean sunfish is one of the most extraordinary creatures beneath the waves.

This gentle giant is the world’s heaviest bony fish — growing over two meters long and weighing up to 2,000 kilograms, heavier than most cars! Unlike most fish, they don’t have a real tail — instead, a rounded structure called a clavus propels them through the water.

Often seen basking at the surface like a drifting solar panel, Mola molas feed mainly on jellyfish, helping keep ecosystems in balance. They thrive during cooler seasons, when nutrient-rich upwellings bring their favorite food close to the surface.

Mobula rays also called “Devil Rays” for their horn-like fins. Despite the name, there’s nothing devilish about them. Mobula rays are gentle filter feeders glide effortlessly through strong currents, feeding on plankton while playing a vital role in the marine ecosystem.

Sadly, mobula rays are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to overfishing and bycatch. Every encounter is a reminder of how fragile — and extraordinary — ocean life truly is.

Meet the Mexican Hogfish (Bodianus diplotaenia) — a reef fish with one of the most fascinating life stories in the ocean. 🐠

They start life as females and can later transform into males, a process called protogynous hermaphroditism. Despite their name, they’re not limited to Mexico — they range throughout the tropical eastern Pacific, from the Gulf of California down to Peru.

These colorful fish also act as reef cleaners, removing parasites from other species at cleaning stations — playing a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

A glimpse of the Hieroglyphic Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) — one of the reef’s most skillful ambush predators. 🐟

Perfectly camouflaged, they perch motionless on corals or rocks, blending into their surroundings until the perfect moment to strike. When prey like small fish or crustaceans pass within reach, the hawkfish attacks in a lightning-fast burst.

Spotting one in the open is rare — these stealthy hunters usually rely on camouflage to remain nearly invisible. A reminder that even the smallest fish can be incredible examples of evolution and precision.

Hammerhead sharks are more than just instantly recognizable — they’re masterpieces of evolution.
Their wide heads, called cephalofoils, enhance vision and hold special sensors that detect the faint electric fields of hidden prey. With nine species worldwide, from the small bonnethead to the mighty great hammerhead, these sharks play a crucial role as apex predators.

Where currents flow, hammerheads follow — drawn by the nutrient-rich waters that sustain entire marine ecosystems.

Meet the bumphead parrotfish (Scarus perrico) — one of the reef’s most important builders. 🪸

Using its powerful beak, this fish scrapes algae and bits of coral, keeping reefs clean and healthy. In the process, it digests and excretes fine coral sand — literally helping create the white beaches we love.

Larger relatives in the Indo-Pacific can produce hundreds of kilos of sand each year, but even smaller species like this one play a vital role in shaping tropical ecosystems.

With its pointed nose and white-spotted body it looks adorable, but don’t be fooled: like all puffers, the sharpnose Pufferfish carries a powerful toxin that keeps predators away. A miniature wonder of the reef! 🌊

The Galápagos green turtle is the only turtle species that breeds and nests in the islands. Weighing up to 200 kg, these turtles are smaller and darker than other Pacific greens, with a more domed shell. Scientists debate whether the Galápagos form (agassizii) is a distinct species or a subspecies of Chelonia mydas — most now treat it as a subspecies. A true icon of the Galápagos!
