Another nice one from the Audax Trail. It’s the volcanic plateau of mt. Teide. Every climb starts at the beach and some ends above 2300 meters. Most of the participants claimed the longest climb ever.

One of my favourite pics from the Audax Trail. He is Janno on the final climb to Mt Teide. It’s late afternoon, the sun finally starts setting and the light is much better. Probably not the best moment for Janno, he only slept a few hours before the endless and remote climb. He is exhaust, but he will soon start descending and he will make the evening ferry to the next island La Palma.

Smiles for miles! Juan Jose, Mauro and Bruno have been smiling for 800 kilometres. Everyday they claimed the best cycling day ever, even better than yesterday. They are experienced cyclists and adventurers. This time they decided to taking it easy to celebrate that Mauro will soon become a father. Effortlessly climbing 4000m a day and riding down where everyone else was hiking. There’s nothing better than a group of friends having a good time in the mountains!

Mas grande que el Teide! Toni managed to replace a missing axle nut in Lanzarote, he drafted the pros in Fuerteventura, he bent his derailleur in Gran Canaria, he slept a few hours in the worst pension of Tenerife, he chatted with all the clerks and waiters from Lanzarote to La Palma. Toni is on the last climb in La Palma and will probably be at the finish line before sunrise. All the other participants regrouped at each ferry and are just one day behind the leader Toni and will probably complete the 800km route in 5 days.

Last night Toni has been slowed down by a bent derailleur hanger. Maarten could still get him on the ferry to La Palma. He will have to climb and descend Mt Teide during the night, keeping a steady pace and just stop for a quick resupply in La Laguna

All the riders crossed Lanzarote at night to make the final ferry in the morning to Fuerteventura. Big kudos!

Only three riders made the next ferry to Gran Canaria: Toni, Maarten and Brent.

Toni knew the route from last year Audax. He planned two resupplies to keep his bike as light as possible. He reached the harbour more than one hour before the ferry departure. What a ride!

Marteen rode the route during his last holidays. He knew what to expect but choose a different approach, he loaded all the food and only stopped for water. With an heavier bike he managed to keep a steady pace and make it to the harbour just in time for the ferry.

Brent stayed on Toni’s wheel until he had to deal with a side-cut tire, replace a couple of tubes and finally find a new tire in a bike rental to restore his tubeless setup. After many years in the pro-peloton, the Audax is his first experience in adventure cycling. The adventure starts when something goes wrong they say
