A Special Resident at Octopus Cove

Over the past three months, a beautiful female Green Turtle has made Octopus Cove her home.
We regularly spot her from the boat as we approach our dive site, and if we're lucky, we get to spend a few minutes with her underwater. The video below was filmed today during one of our dives.

As always when encountering marine wildlife, we approached slowly and calmly, allowing her to continue her normal behaviour undisturbed. She seemed completely relaxed, going about her daily routine and paying very little attention to our presence.

Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are among the largest sea turtles in the world, growing to over a metre in length and weighing well over 100 kg. Despite their size, they are gentle animals and spend much of their time grazing on seagrass and algae. They can live for many decades and are capable of travelling thousands of kilometres between feeding grounds and nesting beaches.

The best news for our divers is that this area is only around 12 metres deep, meaning even students completing their Open Water courses have a chance of meeting this wonderful animal.

Wildlife encounters like this are always a privilege, and we never take them for granted. We hope our resident turtle continues to enjoy life at Octopus Cove for a while longer, giving many more divers the opportunity to see her in her natural environment.

With the sea calm, visibility excellent, and water temperatures currently a very pleasant 23–24°C, conditions for diving in Los Gigantes are superb right now.
Our latest video takes you to Rolf's Cave, one of the most enjoyable and relaxing dives on our local reef system.
The dive begins with the boat anchoring in around 10 metres of water beside a rocky point that hides a small cave on its seaward side. From here, we explore the surrounding reef, gradually descending to a maximum depth of 18 metres while enjoying the incredible variety of marine life that calls this area home.
Rolf's Cave is usually teeming with fish, and every dive offers something different. Towards the end of the dive, we return to the cavern, where sleeping stingrays and Canarian lobsters are often found resting in the shelter of the cave. Beneath a large overhang nearby, trumpetfish can frequently be seen hovering amongst colourful anemones, creating fantastic opportunities for underwater photography.
The combination of shallow depths, abundant marine life and an interesting cavern makes Rolf's Cave a favourite with many of our divers. Whether you're newly qualified, returning to diving after a break, or have hundreds of dives in your logbook, this site always has something to offer.

Last week, Atlantis proved so popular that we scheduled a special dive for some of our most experienced divers to visit Atlantis 2 – The Giant's Causeway.

Just a few minutes from the dive centre, this spectacular site is part of the same reef system as Atlantis but offers an entirely different experience.
The first to jump at the opportunity were Lisa Plowman, Andy Rowe, Neil Pigott and Carol Baily, who joined me for this special dive.
Atlantis 2 is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscape. Massive hexagonal basalt columns rise from the seabed, creating an underwater scene remarkably similar to the world-famous Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The site features a huge natural amphitheatre, towering pinnacles, and even an area that resembles a winding cobbled street disappearing into the depths.
After descending the anchor line to around 18 metres, we made our way to the deepest part of the dive at 30–32 metres. Among the basalt formations we found plenty of marine life, including moray eels peering from crevices and colourful anemones adding splashes of colour to the volcanic reef.
Because of the depth, our time at the bottom is limited, but that simply gives us more opportunity to enjoy the shallower section of the reef on the way back. We finished with a relaxed ascent and safety stop, taking in the incredible scenery one last time before returning to the surface.

Since posting our new Atlantis video at the beginning of August, we've received lots of requests from divers wanting to visit this incredible site. In fact, demand was so high that we dived Atlantis twice last week!
With water temperatures currently a very comfortable 23°C, it's the perfect way to escape the August heat for a while and enjoy some time beneath the surface.
Watch the video to see what we encountered during our dives last week. As always, no two dives are ever exactly the same, which is one of the many reasons Atlantis remains a favourite with our experienced divers.

Atlantis is one of our closest dive sites—just a three-minute boat ride from the dive centre—but it feels like entering another world.

A firm favourite with experienced divers, Atlantis is famous for its extraordinary underwater landscape. The site is formed by a triangular reef of hexagonal basalt columns, many of which have broken away and tumbled across the seabed. The result is a breathtaking scene that resembles the ruins of an ancient lost city, giving Atlantis its well-deserved name.

After completing our buddy checks, we descend the anchor line onto the reef at around 16 metres before continuing deeper to explore the site between 24 and 30 metres. Hidden within the reef is a small cave that provides shelter for a resident shoal of African Grunts, creating a spectacular sight as they gather in the shadows.

The geology alone makes this dive special, but the marine life is equally impressive. Bright yellow gorgonians add colour to the reef, while the surrounding waters are full of life at every turn. In fact, there is so much to see that no two dives at Atlantis are ever quite the same.

One of the site's most popular residents is a friendly local bream that often chooses to accompany divers around the reef and is usually more than happy to pose for photographs.

Combining dramatic volcanic formations, excellent visibility, abundant marine life and exciting depths, Atlantis is a dive that never disappoints and remains one of the highlights of diving in Los Gigantes.

Over the past few months, we've been working hard behind the scenes to improve your diving experience with us.
Our website has been completely redesigned and is now available in four languages. We've also been busy filming and producing brand-new videos for each of our dive sites. Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing these videos every few days, giving you an up-to-date look at the amazing underwater world we enjoy here in Tenerife.
One of the most exciting changes we've witnessed is the continued success of the Marine Protection Zone introduced several years ago. The difference is remarkable – more fish, larger fish, and species that were once rarely, if ever, seen at our dive sites are now becoming regular visitors.
🎥 Our first featured dive site: Barranco Seco Arch (8m)
Nestled beneath Tenerife's dramatic cliffs, Barranco Seco Arch is impressive before you even enter the water. Looking over the side of the boat, you'll see the top of a beautiful natural archway just five metres below the surface – a perfect location for a relaxed safety stop at the end of the dive.
The underside of the arch is covered in colourful red and yellow sponges, while a small neighbouring cavern often provides shelter for rays and lobsters. During the past year, we've also been delighted to watch two new black corals establish themselves here. Black coral is normally found at depths greater than 25 metres, making their growth at just 8 metres something truly special.
Marine life is abundant throughout the site. Stingrays are frequent visitors and often seem more than happy to pose for photographs. Shoals of fish, moray eels and octopus are also regularly encountered.
It's easy to see why Barranco Seco Arch is one of our most requested dive sites, with many divers choosing to return for a second visit. The shallow depth and easy conditions also make it an excellent choice for divers returning after a break, as well as students completing their PADI Open Water or BSAC Ocean Diver training.

A few months ago we had the pleasure of diving here in Los Gigantes with Carlisle & District Divers – BSAC Branch 2472.

They’re a very experienced group, so for me it was a breath of fresh air to get out of the office, join them for a few dives, and of course bring the GoPro along.

Unfortunately, I was using a brand-new camera and hadn’t set it up properly for filming on the boat, so I’m sorry guys – the surface shots are unusable. That said, there are some really lovely moments captured underwater, along with the highlights of what we saw on the dives.

It would be great to see you all again, and next time I promise I’ll have my GoPro settings dialled in!

Another year is almost over, and what a year it’s been!

You will notice some big changes at the dive centre. New windows and doors have been fitted to our 2 locals as well as a brand-new corridor ceiling, and upgraded the lighting. The finishing touch — a new corridor floor — will be laid after the New Year.

Since the creation of the protected zone along our coastline, we’re delighted to see an increasing number of endangered species on our dive sites. Be sure to check out the video below — the clips were taken just last week!

Huge congratulations to the awesome Moffatt family!

Caitlan, Matthew, and Kevin all smashed their Open Water Diver Course last week — what a team!
And a big shoutout to Mum, Alison, who was already a certified diver but jumped in to refresh her skills and get back into the bubbles.
