108 Sun Salutations ☀️
Why 108?
Across yogic and spiritual traditions, 108 is considered a sacred number. A symbol of the relationship between the individual self and the greater universe.
There are said to be 108 energy lines, or nadis, converging at the heart center. A mala contains 108 beads for meditation and prayer. Ancient astronomers observed meaningful relationships involving the sun, moon, and earth reflected in the number 108. Again and again, this number appears as a reminder of connection, wholeness, and the intricate order woven through existence.
To practice 108 Sun Salutations is to enter into that symbolism through movement.
The repetition invites us beyond the thinking mind. Somewhere between the first and the last salutation, the practice ceases to be about counting and becomes an exploration of presence. Breath by breath, we meet resistance, devotion, fatigue, determination, surrender, and renewal.
On the Summer Solstice, the day of greatest light, we will move through 108 cycles as a reflection of life’s own rhythms: expansion and contraction, effort and ease, endings and beginnings.
The significance of 108 is not that we arrive at a number. It is that, through repetition, we remember our place within something larger than ourselves.
108 bows to the sun.
108 breaths of gratitude.
108 reminders that we are both part of the universe and expressions of it.
✨ May this Solstice illuminate the path ahead and deepen our connection to the light within.
