We often use “meditation” as if it describes one single practice.
Patanjali gives us a much more precise framework.
In the Yoga Sutras, dharana is concentration, dhyana is meditation, and samadhi is absorption. They are the final three limbs of the eight-limbed path and are described as a progression of increasingly refined attention.
This is why studying the actual texts matters.
“Meditation” isn’t one universal technique, and not every modern meditation practice is Patanjali’s dhyana.
The more carefully we understand the tradition, the more responsibly we can teach it.
This is part of the philosophy we study in our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, alongside anatomy, asana, pranayama, sequencing and teaching methodology.
