Mallorca SUPCO’s really useful guide to wind 💨🍃
Let’s face it, we talk about wind all the time.
Before your paddle board session, during your paddle board session, after your paddle board session… sometimes it feels like we should just put it on the payroll!
Not because we’re trying to spoil the fun — but because wind is one of the biggest things we read before every paddle board session.
So, what actually is wind? In the simplest possible terms, wind is moving air.
That’s it! But like most simple things, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.
Wind starts because the sun heats the Earth unevenly. Land, sea, mountains, valleys, clouds and coastlines all warm up and cool down at different speeds. When one area becomes warmer, the air above it rises. Cooler air then moves in to replace it.
That movement of air is wind.
In Mallorca, this matters because we are surrounded by sea, shaped by mountains, and blessed with long sunny days. The island creates its own little wind stories, especially around the coast. The sea and land are constantly heating, cooling and swapping air between them.
That is why a calm morning can turn into a breezy afternoon.
In Mallorca, wind isn’t just a direction. Every wind has a name, a mood, and a personality.
1. Tramuntana
2. Gregal
3. Llevant
4. Xaloc
5. Migjorn
6. Llebeig
7. Ponent
8. Mestral.
And then there’s Embat — the local sea breeze we talk about a lot. Embat often builds as the day warms up, turning those dreamy calm mornings into breezier afternoons. Beautiful? Yes. Worth respecting? Absolutely.
For paddle boarding, wind changes everything. It affects how easy it is to paddle, how quickly you drift, how choppy the water feels, and most importantly, how safe it is to go out.
That’s why we don’t just check the forecast.
We read the water. The ripples. The flags. The trees. The direction of the breeze. The mood of the bay.
So when we move a session, change a route, or recommend a calmer time of day, it’s always for one reason: to keep you safe, confident, and smiling on the water.
Because the best adventures are the ones you come back from salty, happy, and already planning the next one 🩵
