DARREN DALTON – NEVER BACKING DOWN! 💪🌺
⏱ 11:17:25 | M45–49 | 170th
Darren’s journey to Kona was anything but straightforward
Darren qualified for the World Championships at IRONMAN Leeds. Funny story he actually thought this wa for 2027 KONA until after the race he realised it was for this year 😂
Unfortunately Darren also came away with more than just his Kona slot. He also tore his calf during the marathon.
Not exactly ideal preparation for the biggest race in our sport! He had a choice and he decided to go to KONA
We knew from the beginning that getting Darren to the start line in Kona would be tight, but one thing was never in doubt. He was going to give himself every possible chance.
Throughout the build, Darren did absolutely everything we asked of him. We had to be smart with the training, manage the injury and build things back carefully without taking unnecessary risks.
And when race day arrived, he gave it everything.
A really solid swim followed by a brilliant 5:01 bike split put him in a great position heading onto the marathon.
Unfortunately, the lack of running during the build eventually caught up with him. Despite his best efforts, Darren had to run/walk large parts of the marathon. Not because of his calf just the lack of running effected his quads and he found it hard
Frustrating? Absolutely.
But considering where he was after Leeds and the challenges he faced just getting to Kona, this was still a massive achievement.
I know how much work Darren put into his recovery and preparation, and it was brilliant to be there supporting him through the day.
And the best part?
He’s already talking about coming back to Kona, this time fully fit and ready to attack that TOP 10 in his age group.
Love that attitude. Unfinished business, Darren! 🔥
