Does the budget ride with you?

Sixty-two riders were asked which of five areas is their weakest. Flow came first, no surprise.

Second wasn't mindset. It was money.

Nobody talks about that one, because it doesn't feel like a performance problem. It feels like admin. But a rider worrying about the cost of a crash rides differently to a rider who isn't, and the stopwatch can tell.

Nearly a quarter of riders pick this one as the thought that costs them most.

Here's the thing worth noticing. It's a prediction about the future, delivered with total confidence, by a part of your brain that has no idea what you're capable of next season.

It sounds like an assessment. It's a guess.

Sixty-six riders scored their own access to flow out of ten. The average came back at five.

Five out of ten, from people who organise their whole lives around going fast.

That's not a talent problem. Flow has conditions, and if nobody has ever told you what they are, you get it by accident about half the time and you never know why.

Which one is yours?

That's the single most picked thought in the whole set. One rider in three.

And notice what it is. It isn't lazy or soft. It's a risk calculation, and it's a decent one, because the consequences are real and your brain knows it.

The trouble is timing. It arrives at the brake marker, which is exactly where you need your attention on the corner and not on the argument.

Qualifying done at MotorLand Aragon. Cormac Buchanan starts Sunday's Moto3 race from P16 for BOÉ Motorsports.

He fought through Q1 into Q2 with a best lap of 1'57.289. Now the focus turns to Sunday, working hard on race pace.

What does the night before actually look like?

Sixteen riders said a version of this. Most of them already knew it, which is what makes it interesting.

Most riders prepare the bike thoroughly and prepare themselves by accident. Then the first session gets spent catching up, and that's a session you've paid for.

Prep isn't more effort. It's a handful of things in a fixed order, so your head turns up at the same time your bike does. Not technique, the state you arrive in.

How much of your riding is protecting the budget?

Nine riders put it in almost exactly these terms. It doesn't get talked about, and it should.

Careers rarely end because a rider got slow. They end because the money ran out. And long before that, the worry gets on the bike with you. You brake a fraction earlier, leave a little in reserve, and never quite work out why.

That isn't weakness. It's arithmetic your brain is running whether you asked it to or not.

What would you be relieved of?

Same 101 riders, same question. What would riding at your full potential actually feel like?

More of them reached for relief than reached for winning.

Which tells you what they're carrying. Not a lack of pace. A weight. And you can be quick and still be carrying it. Plenty of them are.

Does wanting it more ever make you slower?

Wanting it more is supposed to be the answer. Often it's the problem.

You grip tighter, push harder, force it, and the lap gets worse. That's not you failing. That's your system doing exactly what it does under threat: tense up, narrow down, protect. The harder you squeeze, the less flows.

The fix isn't more effort. It's knowing which moments to take effort out of.

Sunday night. Engines off.

Thirty per cent of riders, asked what their best would feel like, used the word fun. Nine per cent said winning.

Most riders have had it once or twice, a session where it went quiet and everything arrived early, and couldn't tell you how they got there. It isn't luck and it isn't form. It's a state, and states can be trained.
