There have been many times in my life when my yoga practice became a little… slack.
I knew I missed it when I wasn’t practicing, but instead of acknowledging that feeling and lovingly bringing myself back to my yoga mat I would start judging myself...
Why am I being so lazy?
I should practice more.
I just need more discipline...
That didn't feel good!
Yoga was supposed to help me connect more deeply with myself. Yet somehow, my practice had become another place where I was judging myself...
I was approaching yoga through the very voice I wanted yoga to help me move beyond...The part of me that compares, criticizes, and constantly tells me what I should be doing.
Somewhere along the way, my practice had changed from something that connected me to myself into something I felt I should accomplish.
One day, instead of deciding what my practice should look like, I simply sat down; I noticed my breath, and I felt into my body. And instead of telling my body what I should do, I asked... How do I feel today? What do I need?
And then I listened....
The important part was that I wasn’t forcing myself into an idea of what yoga was supposed to look like; I was meeting myself where I actually was. That became part of what it means to me to see yoga as something sacred.
Sacred doesn’t mean perfect; it doesn’t mean being disciplined every single day. It doesn’t mean doing the “right” poses or having an impressive practice.
For me, yoga becomes sacred when it gives me a space to move beyond the judging mind and reconnect with something deeper.... The Source, the Divine, my Higher Being.
A place where I can listen instead of constantly telling myself what I should be doing.
Because deepening our yoga practice isn’t always about doing more, I feel that it’s about learning to listen more deeply...
This has changed the way I teach, too!
Of course I have knowledge, practices, and sequences I can draw from, but I try not to teach from my mind or from a fixed plan; I listen to what seems to be needed in that particular moment.
So next time you come to your yoga mat, maybe don’t immediately decide what your practice should be like...
Sit for a moment, feel your breath and your body.
And ask yourself... How do I feel today? What do I need?
Then see what happens when you allow your practice to grow from the answer, I’d love to know....
