Matthew Jenkins, 20, died after being struck by lightning while out for an evening run in Celebration, Florida, on September 8.

He had arrived from Shelby Township, Michigan, roughly a week earlier to begin the Disney College Program, and he was in the middle of a Chicago Marathon build. His family said he had been running regularly around the neighborhood since moving down.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, the strike came down near a hotel on Bloom Street shortly after 6:30pm. Deputies responding to the call found him unresponsive on the walking path that runs behind the building, where people nearby had already started CPR. He was pronounced dead at Celebration Hospital, and the medical examiner determined the cause was electrocution from the strike.

No state records more lightning deaths than Florida. Of the fifteen logged nationally this year, six were there.

The safety guidance is worth repeating because it is easy to ignore mid-run. Thunder means you are already within range of the next strike. A building or a car is the only real shelter, not a tree and not an open-sided pavilion, and the wait is a full 30 minutes after the last rumble before you finish the session. Florida storms build fastest in the late afternoon, which happens to be when most of us head out.
