🚨 POPE’S VISIT TO GRAN CANARIA - WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT ROAD CLOSURES THAT AFFECT SOUTH 11TH JUNE 🌺

First of all, sorry for any confusion. The Pope will be in Gran Canaria on Thursday 11th June (not Friday), and the information released so far relates mainly to temporary traffic restrictions on the GC-1.

📌For most visitors staying in Puerto de Mogán, Tauro, Taurito, Puerto Rico, Amadores, Playa del Cura , Patalavaca, Amfi del Mar,Arguineguín, this is the important part:

🚗 Late morning: Expect delays travelling the airport towards the tourist resorts in South.
🚗 Southbound delays (10:30 - 11:45)
The affected section is Gran Canaria airport and follows the GC-1 south towards the tourist resort in the South

🚗 Around lunchtime: Expect delays travelling north from the tourist resorts towards the airport .
🚗 Northbound delays (12:15 - 13:15)
If you are travelling towards Las Palmas around lunchtime, allow extra time.

❓ What is a “dynamic closure”?
This does NOT normally mean the motorway is completely closed for the whole period. A dynamic closure is a rolling or moving closure where traffic is temporarily stopped and managed by police as the official convoy passes. Once the convoy has passed, traffic is gradually released again.

🛣 Alternative routes
During these periods, drivers may wish to use the GC-500 coastal road where practical, or simply avoid travelling during the affected times.

✈️ Flying on Thursday 11th June?
Authorities are expecting large numbers of pilgrims and visitors. If you are flying from Gran Canaria Airport, allow extra travel time and keep an eye on updates from your airline.

As always, I’ll share any further official information as soon as it becomes available 🌺

🌺 Buenos Días / Good Morning
📮 UPDATE – AIRPORT, WEATHER & LOCAL
📆 Thursday 21st May 2026

Good morning from another beautiful and very calm morning in Puerto de Mogán 🌞 its very cloudy this morning - all forecasts says it’s blue sky 🤣 very likely the sun will “eat” the clouds very soon

🇪🇺 EUROMOGÁN YESTERDAY

I went down to EuroMogán yesterday afternoon and what I enjoyed the most was actually the Fishing Museum experience 🐟

They had virtual reality glasses where it felt like you were onboard one of the fishing boats heading out to sea. Very interesting to see how the traditional fishing equipment is used. I also learned that the traditional “nasas” are filled with bread as bait.

Did any of you go yesterday?
And did you try any of the international food? 🌺

🛍️ IMPORTANT - MARKET DAY TOMORROW
Tomorrow is Friday market day in Puerto de Mogán.

The stalls begin setting up very early tonight and into the early morning hours.

⚠️ Important for anyone with a car:
Parking along:
• the road from the roundabout towards the pier
• and the street behind the beach
is prohibited after midnight tonight.

Cars parked there will be removed.

🛍️ FRIDAY MARKET INFO
The Friday market in Puerto de Mogán is one of the largest on Gran Canaria and attracts visitors from all over the island.

🕘 Market hours:
09:00 - 14:00

The market stretches:
• from near Cordial Mogán Valle
• along the avenue
• across the bridge
• towards the pier and lighthouse

💡 My tips:
• Arrive early if possible
• The first hours are much calmer
• Bring some cash as not all stalls accept cards
• Friendly bargaining is completely normal if prices are not marked

Usually around 20-40% depending on the item and always done politely and with a smile 😊

⚠️ Fridays are noticeably busier in the village:
• parking becomes difficult
• restaurants fill quickly around lunchtime
• taxis may take longer
• busses are full

🍴 Many people stay afterwards for lunch by the harbour or beach promenade.

⛴️ LOCAL TIP

If you want a little trip outside Puerto de Mogán, the ferry is honestly one of the nicest ways to travel along the coast 🌊

Very relaxed and beautiful coastal views.

Light winds this morning becoming slightly breezier later today.

Puerto de Mogán remains much more sheltered than many other parts of Gran Canaria due to the mountains around the valley.

Still very comfortable overall.

🐟 8th Mogán Tuna and Sea Fair, a tribute to the fishing industry and seafood cuisine

➡️ The mayor of Mogán, , and the Gran Canaria Minister of Tourism, Carlos Álamo, presented the event this morning from the Arguineguín Pier.

This year, the fair has a special new feature: Barbate is the guest municipality! 🤝🌊
A region that shares Mogán's seafaring tradition and will bring us the spectacular tuna cutting ceremony and the famous "Jamón del Mar" (ham of the sea).

✨ On Friday the 21st, we will pay tribute to our sailors:

Francisco Ortega Santana, Angel Perdomo Alonso, Jose Macías Hernández, and Estanislao Godoy Déniz.
A recognition of their lives linked to the sea. ⚓💙

✨ On Saturday the 22nd, enjoy:

🔹 Cutting of a 221 kg tuna
🔹 Tastings and show cooking with Sergio Fernández, HECANSA, and chefs from Barbate
🔹 Music: Pedro Afonso, Pepe Benavente, Playa Coco, and Una Más
🔹 Children's area from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
🔹 Local cuisine and a unique selection of seafood products 🐟🔥

The Tuna and Sea Fair highlights artisanal fishing, the work of our fishing guilds, and the value of local products as an essential part of Mogán's identity and tourist appeal.

Organized by: Mogán Town Hall
In collaboration with: Gran Canaria Tourism, Canary Islands Government – Volcanic Xperience, and Cajasiete.
