A very much reduced Nationals are over and our congratulations go to our Ladies and Gents singles winners, Lisa Bonsor, Terry Morgan who get the chance to represent Spain in New Zealand this November and the very best of luck to both of them.

Monday 10th and the Harrier Division resumed with our visit to La Siesta Hornets, where indeed we did get stung, we came away with 3 points, thanks to Mo Kidd, Cliff Rawlingson and Garth Slater's win of 24-17, and Dave Joynes, Jan and Pete Parsons drawing 17 shots each. Overall the score was 3-9 with a shot difference of 78-94 in the Hornets favour.

Wednesday 18th and we travelled to San Miguel and earned a hornable 6 points each. Strangely enough both our pairs and triples won 25-10 to secure 4 points and our Men's singles only lost by two shots and our rink by only 1. Helping to secure a overall shot difference of 90-79 and a further 2 points. 3 shots got Sam Miguel 4 points just proving again that every shot counts.

No league Bowls this week as the Nationals are on at Quesada, so perhaps it would be a good opportunity to talk about the requirements of the club. The grounds of course are privately owned and maintained but the green cleaning, equipment, league entry monies etc are all down to the membership which then comes down to the committee and perhaps the most unsung member of that is the social secretary. Keeping members happy and trying to make money is never easy. Our main sources at present seem to be race nights, quiz nights and table top sales. When I was a kid these were called bring and buy sales and this still holds good today. The table top is by far our best source of income, with the advantage of bringing monies in from outside of the club members. Our next table top sale is Saturday Morning 28th May, so please enter the date in your diary along with your loose change and check those cupboards, wardrobes and under builds for items we can sell. Let's see if we can reward Loritta (and her helpers) for all their hard work and make this one the most successful ever.

08/05/2022

Don;t forget TABLE TOP SALE - Sat 28th May, so look out your old goods and chattels, and if they are too large or heavy contact us a few days before and we will try and arrange collection. All donations welcome.

11-21 down 3 ends to go, so where's the excitement. Ask Mo Kidd, Cliff Rawlingson and Mike Smith and they will tell you there is always hope. Pick up 6 on the 16th end, 4 on the 17th and drop 1 on the 18th to lose 21-22, such a shame. This all happened on Monday 2nd May at home against Country Bowls where we lost 2 trips and won 3 plus a overall shot difference of 87-79 to secure a 8-4 win.

Wednesday 4th and we find ourselves at St Louis in the rain. If the conditions are too bad after 2 thirds of play the result can stand, at 2 thirds we would have secured 2 points, but the decision was to carry on and we ended up with 10 points, although very wet but happy players.

Bowls is basically a simple game, get closer to the jack than your opponent but like all life it cannot proceed without rules/laws. Anyone can play without being questioned on their knowledge of the rules but to be a official you have to have knowledge and capabilities assessed. Fred and Gail Wiltshire (in this area), take their own time and effort to ensure we have plenty of umpires and markers available, with this in mind they have recently run a markers course to which we sent 3 members to become qualified markers, the following is Norman Ship's report on the experience.

I have been bowling now for 4 years and I recently put my name down to attend a bowlers Marking course at San Luis with 2 other bowlers from the La Marina Bowls Club, Trevor Stemp and David Southwell.

There were 26 people on the course from 8 different bowls clubs. The course was well run by Gail & Fred Whillshire who had clearly put in a lot preparation to run the course over two consecutive Saturdays 23/30 April between 10.00am & 4.30pm.

We received pre course e-mails from Gail with guidance and encouragement regarding reading the law book and links to videos on guidance with marking techniques along with links to the CBUMA website for some home study too.

On the first Saturday morning 4 hours were spent in the class room discussing the best way to use the red Bowls Law book and we discussed various laws which was done in a well structured manner with a bit of humour thrown in as well.

In the afternoon, we went outside to the bowls green where there was a total of 12 umpires that set up various scenarios to practice our marking and measuring techniques. It was interesting seeing and using the various measuring devices under the guidance of the umpires

I know how the queen felt now when she said it had been a horrible year. Only she said it in Latin.

Firstly I must make a correction, last week I said our Race Night was 18th April and it's is not it's on Thursday 14th. The 18th is Easter Weekend and hopefully the bars and restaurants will be busy but I was right about it being a great night, so please support it.

Monday was a horrible day Arsenal lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace (I blame Maureen Kidd's grandson, Connor as he seems to be a human dynamo), and La Marina bowls lost 12-0. A case of least said soonest mended.

Lastly on Wednesday we said goodbye to Eva Tucker a women you could not help but like because she was so full of life. RIP Eva.

The League has now shut down for Champion of Champions which this year will all be held at Quesada. First round fixtures for La Marina contestants are:
Monday am Mixed Fours Parsons & Joynes
“ Mixed Pairs Anne & Mike Stone

Tuesday am Men's Pairs Garth & Alex
“ Ladies Paris Marilyn & Irene

Wednesday am Men's Singles Don Fowkes
“ 12.30 Ladies Singles Janet Parsons

Good Luck to all.

Monday 28th March saw us at home in the Harrier Division to La Siesta Hornets, where we lost 4 points to 8, trying to watch was quite cold but it amazes me how many still play in shorts and tee shirts, (a breed above) The final shots were 82-91 close for a game in which our 3 losses added up to 34 shots but our big winning trip of Lesley & Dave Joynes and Trevor Hancock won 29-7 (top winning trip of the day) helped to greatly reduce the total and made the overall quite acceptable.

Wednesday 30th was a different story, we were at home to San Miguel in the VCL league (my favourite formula) and won 10-2. We won both the singles with Margaret Finlayson and Tom Spencer by 21-18, and we fought back from a losing position to win the rinks 20-18, the pairs of Norman Ship and Alex Morrice won 25-12, we only lost on the trips by 11-20 giving us a shot difference of 98-86.

Friday saw our re-arranged VCL game against San Louis Hawks and it was well worth waiting for another 10-2 win, - 2 10-2's in 1 week, well done everybody.

Lastly we would like to thank Bumblebee Prints (a local firm on our urbanization) for updating our honours board which is a credit to their skills and artistic values, as they have been providing the service to us for many years. You can enjoy bowls and never win, you can win the club championship and feel exaulted but to see your name on the honours board is when you feel real pride, take a look at our honours board in the clubhouse and you can't help but admire it - to see your name up there being part of the history of the club is really something special.

PS: The summer leagues are shortly taking a break for the Champion of Champions which is being held at Quesada, please support our members who are taking part. Either check the notice board, or check the Levante Lawn Bowls web site, for disciplines and dates.

PPS: Loreta is organising Monkey Racing for the 18th April, please either contact her or put your name on the sheet on the notice board. All are welcome

Last week we were playing catch up with our competitions that were cancelled the previous weekend. Saturday proved a busy day and a real glorious day for playing and watching bowls. In the morning we had a club day that John Rae held, followed by our 2 singles finals, followed by presentations and a buffet. All in all an excellent day. Our competition winners are as follows:

MIXED 4's - Peter & Janet Parsons with Don & Jean Fowkes.

MIXED Trips Anne & Mike Stone with Carol Smith.

MEN's Trip Peter Parsons, Mike Stone and Don Fowkes.

MIXED PAIRS Anne & Mike Stone.

MEN'S PAIRS Garth Slater and Alex Morrice.

LADIES PAIRS Irene Mangan and Maryln Fryatt

MEN'S SINGELS Don Fowkes

LADIES SINGELS Janet Parsons

Wishing you all well in Champion of Champions our commiserations to all our losing finalists and a big thank you for a very successful competition season.

Mother used to say March in like a lion and out like a lamb. The first seems to be right lets hope the sencond is as well.

Monday saw the start of our summer league and our team travelled down to Country Bowls, on a cold and wet day to achieve a fine result ably reported by our team captain Margaret Finlayson “ we won on 3 rinks, highest winning rink – by Moira, Cliff and Shirley reaching a score of 30-13, the other 2 winning rinks did well and the other 2 losing rinks did well to keep their scores down to give us a overall shots total of 106-91 a great start to a new league”.

Wednesday could not have been more different, a fine drizzle of red rain hardly noticeable until you see everything turning red including our whites and bowls. It was the first game of the new season with the format of 1 rink, 1 triple, 1 pairs, and 1 men's singles and 1 ladies singlesh. We travelled to Greenlands and unfortunately came away with a Eurovision Score of Nil points.

Friday 18th saw our re-arranged Parthfinders game against St Louis Trekers with a winning total of 8 points to 2, shot difference 73 for 58 against and our top trip of Trevor Stemp, Irene Mangan and John Rae winning 25-8. I must'nt jump to conclusions but I do feel this score may have led to promotion, we must all wait with baited breath until the league tables are published.

I was hoping to give our in-house competions results, but unfortunately our finals weekend was rained off. This was followed by the Pathfinders game being cancelled on Monday, but the Explorers game against the San Miguel Dalmatians at home was played. After a 8.30 green inspection, it looked very playable and so it proved to be – not perhaps the result we hoped for losing 8 – 2, and not the fine sunny weather we would rather play in but competitive bowls cannot guarantee ideal conditions. Well done all for completing this fixture.

Friday 11th The Sharks played at home against El Rancho and got a resounding victory of 10-0, a great result that virtually guarantees we stay in the top division. Our top winning rink was Janet Parsons, Margaret MacLaughlin and Mike Stone 27 – 11.

The Seagulls meanwhile were away to San Miguel Boxers and unfortunately lost 8 – 2, our only winning rink being Lesley & Dave Joynes, skipped by Irene Mangan.

We have a extra game this week, when last Friday's games have both been re-arranged for next Tuesday. Also next week sees the commencement of the Summer League and the VCL, keeping us competitively involved with bowling until June.

Friday 25th and The Seagulls afternoon game missed the deadline, but it was a result worth waiting for. They played La Manga Crusaders and came away winning 8-2, I must congratulate our top winning trip of Mo Taylor, Trevor Hancock, & Garth Slater by getting more than the magic 30 – by winning 32-9 and I must commiserate with Trevor Stemp, and Audrey & Alan Birch who lost by the odd shot of 15-16.

Monday 28th Both our teams are doing our utmost to stay strong for promotion only dropping 1 trip between them, the Pathfinders won at home 10-0 against La Siesta Pioneers, our top trip being Dave Southwell, Dave McGaw and Irene Mangan winning 28-12. The Explorers won 8-2 away to St Louis Trekkers with our top trip again surpassing that magic 30 – Janet & Peter Parsons, abeley assisted by Carol Smith winning 35-6. Well done both of you making for a very exciting end of season.

Not able to report on Friday 4th games so this will have to wait until next week, which will also include our internal competitions results.
I can however report on 2 finals winch had to be brought forward.

Wednesday saw the mixed triples of Anne Stone, and Carol & Mick Smith v Dave Southwell and Don & Jean Fowkes which turned out to be a game of 3 halves. The first half Don's trip pulled away to a 12-1 lead, only to be pulled back by the Smiths to within 3 shots, then Don's team pulled away again to win 21-9. a much closer game than what the score would suggest.
Thursday saw Don on the green again this time aided by Peter Parsons and Mike Stone, in the men's trips to play against Garth Slater, Led Daniels and John Rae, and what a terrific game of bowls it was, matching each other end after end with a final score of 15-11. Seems a comfortable win but on the last end with just 2 bowls to play John's team was holding game and with that last wood Don secured a victory by bowling a perfect draw shot.

News update, we can now publish the finals schedule, we start Wednesday (am) with the Mixed Triples, consisting of Anne Stone, Carol & Mike Smith versus Dave Southwell and Jean & Don Fowkes.

22/02/22
Monday 21st and the Flamingoes came to roost at La Marina, they travelled up from Country Bowls to play our Pathfinders and left with a fine 8-2 victory. We ended up with 1 winning trip namely Martha Reynolds, Len Daniels and John Rae, but lost to a shot difference of 52-69.

The Explorers had a afternoon game against La Siesta, winning on 2 trips but losing the overall shots by just 5 – 68-73. Our top winning trip 20-12 consisted of Jean Theatregoing, and Carol & Mike Smith. We then won one trip by 1 shot and lost another trip by 1 shot, just proving once again those odd shots make such a huge difference.

Friday 25th – three games to go and if the Sharks are going to stay in Division A, they are going to need all the points they can get. Today they are at home to Country Bowls who are proving to be a difficult team to beat. That's how it proved to be but we got a draw 5 points each down mainly to our women only trip of Kath, Margaret and Shirley who were our only winning trip with a score of 26-17 but a big enough margin to give us the overall shots of 71-64 securing another 2 points. Steve, Tom and Don scored a honourable draw ensuring each team a extra point to draw the game. The Seagulls unfortunately have a afternoon game away and their result will not be in time to meet our deadline, so we can simply hope for the best as they are in a similar position of the Sharks needing all the points they obtain.

Don Fowkes, our competions secretary certainly had a job on his hands with so many people doubling up in the finals and some may have to be brought forward. The real sad news however is that Barbara Forshaw has got through to 2 finals has had a fall and dislocated her shoulder. Let's just hope she will be fit enough to play.
