Anything away from mainstream - La Liga, Premier, Champions League It would be great if you could join in!

Segunda B, Tercera, Preferente, English Non-League, when I am there. It all comes from the page 'Footballing Backwaters' which was quite popular amongst my fb friends. It did however clog up one or two newsfeeds of people who clearly had no love for the beautiful game. The easy solution was to s

et up a fb page - hence Football Pirate - to give photo accounts of my footballing adventures in Spain, England and beyond. It's also a good way of promoting the beautiful game which is losing its soul more and more as each day passes. I have nothing against big clubs and their right to make money, but it must be time to support something which everyone can identify with and help those that actually need my cash. There is also a window for visitors to post there own entries of footballing travels from below the mainstream world of football.

Shock horror another Covid case or two changed my plans last Sunday and with it a surprise new ground; Puerto Rico home of C.d. Alzola. I've tried to avoid new grounds this season as the experience may not represent what you get in 'normal' times - no café bar open, no visiting fans allowed, reduced capacity, only members ('socios'), having to sit in a specific spot all game - the antithesis of lower league football. I'm not one for looking through fences or climbing trees, although I understand that addiction can lead to more desperate measures! So anyway, I got far more than I expected at CD Alzola-Halcones - well run and clean bar, lovely ground with good views, good home support and as always the visitors, known for their 'FC United' style approach brought good numbers. I hope both teams stay up! (Espero que los dos equipos se salven!)

Two more games last week at Botti - after a very long break. Five or six weeks between home games, various COVID cases in one team or another and all in all a total loss of rhythm, plenty of injuries and lack of fitness has led to the loss of form they had pre-Easter. (Double) relegation will come soon enough, but it's not surprising I still much prefer this than any of the apparent drama in La Liga. Live sport always wins! Particular highlight was seeing a league match under lights v San Fernando- first time! (Seen a couple of pre-season friendlies, but nothing else).

Part II of the May 'puente' action. Glorious weather, friendly man on the door, very approachable at the bar and a very good game of football. Hope Fortuna stay in the division. It's a ground I've only been to 3 times, but assuming Botti are in the Preferente next season I'd rather go to La Fortuna than some of the 'B' teams.

First Saturday match since about 2019 to get the long weekend off to a fine start!
Aravaca's ground often looks on its last legs - because it is, but fair play, some extra signage, covid-friendly facilities, the bar has been given a slight clean and not lost its character and the chairs have been organised into a proper terrace. Plenty to like and with a late comeback from the hosts and a bit of 'afters' after the winning goal, I went home more than happy; a lot to be said for a 12.30 Saturday start with 2.5+ days left of the weekend.

Taking part in the social media boycott last weekend has put me a bit behind the game - nearly 2 weeks ago I was lucky enough to revisit (after a 3 year gap) one of my favourite lower league grounds in Madrid capital. AAVV Orcasitas has been completely rebuilt, now with an astroturf, and essentially it is the shell of the original stadium; the two main stands are in the same place and the bar has the same corner. The benches are on the opposite side and the changing rooms are different. Also, the mural remembering the tragic death of a former player (murdered on the costa del-sol 10 years ago has been removed) I guess there will be a replacement memorial at some point. It really is a lovely venue and we are quite likely to use it as part of a future day out in the 2021/22 season.

I always enjoy a birthday party, but I've been to few and far between recently, so it was great to be 'on the list' for C.D. Betis San Isidro's 90th celebration game. A massive thank you to Pablo García Rojo for the invite. It was brilliant to catch up with fellow fútbol modesto fan, participant and Real Football Stories podcaster Roddy Cons and have a cheeky cerveza during and after the game. Lovely weather, great company and some very entertaining football - the defensive coaches may not have been happy, but we got great value on (and off) the pitch.
No Botti again this week, so something else different today (25th April) coming.

A planned walk along the river Manzanares from the Mingorrubio, El Pardo started off with a football match between the two lowest possible ranked teams; the bottom two in the 9th tier. The quality wasn't there, but the effort was, and the referee joined in by sending off three players. This was my first match here; the ground had long been derelict and only recently given a lick of paint and a nice new astroturf. With the glorious weather, views of the Madrid sierra, the cemetary and surrounding hills it was a really fun morning's viewing on and off the pitch. I'll be back, as I want to see the real home team - AD. El Pardo, once a few divisions above. Incidentally, CD Fuencarral were not that long ago also in the 5th tier of 🇪🇸 football and are now homeless themselves.

Glorious and unexpected day out at CD Galapagar - Got an invitation and table booked up on the terrace overlooking the pitch. Arrived at 10am (for an 11.45am start) - left quite late (food photos is previous post), although we were led back to the village centre for the some coffee, patcharan and dog training trickery. El Chopo is a top top place; all three visits have involved fun on and off the pitch, and as for the football, 'Gala' must be a great bet to get promoted. They play extremely attractive football and would be a wonderful addition to the 3aRFEF next season.

Got some bonus football in on 'jueves santo' thanks to a friend organising a table from 10am for an 11.45 start. Limited capacity and mainly for members at CD Galapagar Very sizeable breakfast, followed by a caña or two. The lunch food stole the show though. Never been a massive fan of 'Oreja' - and I always think I eat pretty much anything. This was absolutely 10/10!

Final day of the regular season in 3a - lovely day out including the key ingredients; breakfast, lunch, dinner, sunshine, beers, and some football, which in the end was somewhat farcical - an excellent match with the locals winning 3-1 to finish the season in the promotion group, leaving Botti in the relegation section, ended up with both clubs filing allegations of ineligibility of players and failure of meeting protocols against each other. The end result? a 3-0 defeat for both clubs! Impossible to win any bet on that one.

Anyway, before the 'polemica' it was just top fun - game and breakfast in Móstoles, lunch in Laguna and dinner in the centre of Madrid watching Albania v England.

Just a tremendous day at Botti! And it turned into a day - 7 nationalities in the gang - Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica, Northern Ireland and England. About 14/15 of us in total. and International Brigade joy!

A home win, 3 red cards, beers flowing, bocatas eaten, plenty of banter, warm spring morning and even an outside chance of avoiding the relegation group - until the two closest rivals got extra points midweek for other teams ineligible players. Who cares? It's all about the fun and on such a glorious morning, that's exactly what is was. Thanks to all those who made it!

Thursday....Europa League night for some, but for me a moment to enjoy last weekend's excursion to the 'red belt' of Parla for some more tercera action. Great company from Mike and Roy, and Botti - aka SAD Villaverde San Andrés put on a good performance that could easily have ended in three points with better shooting boots. Great spring weather, Los Prados, Parla is always a good ground to visit and Agrupación Deportiva Parla is a cool club with decent fans.
