Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 10/10
Fatigue: 3/10
Ease of terrain: 5/10 - it’s not difficult walking it’s just super steep!

⭐️Highlights: so many! Reaching the lake, getting to the station and getting on the train five minutes later. Also getting to go on the ferry. Starting the next section and doing a good climb.

🏔️Challenges: I bought a cookie and the lady didn’t pack it for me. So I didn’t get my cookie. Which I’m very upset about. Not joking.

💭Thoughts: feeling really pumped and excited to be in the mountains ⛰️ the views already have just been extraordinary - and it’s only the first day! In order to finish on time I need to double up on four sections. Which should be very doable! Fingers crossed 🤞

Enjoyment: 10/10
Fatigue: 2/10
Ease of terrain: 3/10

⭐️Highlights: Getting to Switzerland 🇨🇭 doing such a big day (which makes tomorrow easier) - good food, good weather & amazing views!

🏔️Challenges: 2 diversions and route changes. At one point I was going in completely the wrong direction and I didn’t knew how they were going to reroute me.
In Switzerland there are no more GR5 markers / instead it’s yellow diamonds which makes route finding a bit more challenging.

💭Thoughts: getting up early makes a massive difference! lol! 😂 same again for tomorrow the alarm is set!!

COMING on 8th September!

Sylvia Malan-Gonzalez: Why Hiking is for Every Body | Fat Positive Hiking, Confidence & Community

Sylvia Malan-Gonzalez is a Fat Positive Hiker from Portland, Oregon, on a mission to show that hiking really is for every body.

Although she enjoys being active, Sylvia didn't fall in love with hiking straight away. Getting started wasn't easy. Finding affordable gear that fit, overcoming self-doubt, and navigating the outdoors in a body that isn't often represented in the hiking world all presented their own challenges.

Instead of giving up, Sylvia set herself a simple goal: hike twice a month. One trail at a time, she built confidence, found supportive communities, discovered the gear that worked for her, and eventually climbed Mt. St. Helens—proving to herself that she was capable of far more than she ever imagined.

In this episode, Sylvia shares what it means to be a Fat Positive Hiker, why she embraces body neutrality over chasing weight loss, and how learning to trust herself has transformed both her relationship with the outdoors and with her own body.

We also talk about overcoming fear, dealing with judgement, finding hiking partners, using hiking poles, building strength in the gym, and why losing your hiking mojo doesn't mean your adventure is over.

Whether you're completely new to hiking, returning after time away, or simply looking for encouragement to take that first step, Sylvia's story is a reminder that the outdoors belongs to everyone.

Enjoyment: 8/10
Fatigue: 5/10 - struggled to get going in the am
Ease of terrain: 5/10 - more climbing but still manageable

⭐️Highlights: not the salad 🥗

🏔️Challenges: I don’t know what I was thinking ordering a salad - I think I was trying to be healthy but it’s really messed up my gut. My stomach is like what’s this? This is not easy to digest. This isn’t our normal diet of sugar, carbs, protein, chocolate and fats, we’re gonna have to work really hard to digest this.

💭Thoughts: I need to look into the GTJ trail - I keep seeing markers for it and it looks pretty awesome 🙌

Subjective feeling out of 10 on:

Enjoyment: 9/10
Fatigue: 2/10
Ease of terrain: 3/10

⭐️Highlights: it sounds awful when I say that nothing really stood out. It was just a very standard day.

🏔️Challenges: none really - just a very normal consistent day.

💭Thoughts: i’m still thinking a lot about the Alps and the elevation gain and loss from the mountains. It’s gonna be so hard to continue to do the mileage I’m doing in that terrain. I’ve only got one lever that I can pull and I just don’t want to do it but I need to. The only thing I can change is getting up earlier. Sunset is getting earlier and earlier - I don’t like walking in the dark so therefore getting up earlier is my only option.
