Just when it looked like the boys from Daya Nueva Veteranos CF were settling into a well-earned summer break, they decided to lace up their boots once again. Midway through June, with the sun shining brightly, many might argue the beach or a shady terrace would be the perfect place to spend a Sunday morning. But for three sides from the Alicante province, there was nowhere better than a football pitch.
Daya Nueva Veteranos welcomed teams Hondon Nieves CF and Chaskic FC to La Puebla for an end-of-season triangular tournament. The aim was simple: bring the teams together, enjoy some competitive football, and perhaps improve fitness levels ahead of next season. Three 45-minute matches would decide the destination of the trophy.
Daya Nueva Vets had not trained or played since their final league fixture on 24th May, and with player departures and changes behind the scenes, the club finds itself in something of a transition period ahead of the new campaign in September. The priority now is to rediscover the enjoyment of playing football, put off-field distractions aside, and build a strong commitment to training and matchdays.
There are naturally plenty of questions to answer over the summer. Does the squad need strengthening? How many additions are required? And, perhaps more importantly, what sort of characters will help shape the club's future? After almost three years in existence, there have been encouraging signs of progress, but a stronger team identity is still needed.
With plenty of positives happening away from the pitch, now is the time to establish a clear coaching structure and ensure everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction. With changes to the LFVA format possibly coming next season, Daya Nueva know they must continue moving forward.
Game 1
Daya Nueva Veteranos CF 4-1 Hondon Nieves CF
Daya's opening opponents were Hondon Nieves CF. Only a few weeks earlier, Hondon had deservedly beaten Daya 3-0 in a friendly, a result the boys from the Vega Baja were keen to put right. However, Daya came into the tournament encouraged by back-to-back league draws and a clean sheet, signs that organisation and teamwork had improved considerably.
The hosts fielded a strong squad, with new signing Niko making his home debut. Aaron Costa Plaza returned after leaving midway through the season, while Bernardo made his first appearance since April. A late goalkeeper withdrawal caused a selection headache, but with Jacob Sharratt available, Daya knew they were in safe hands.
Daya lined up with Sharratt in goal; Aaron Costa Plaza at right-back, Piotr Skwierz at left-back, with Bernardo and Niko in central defence. Josh Fazzino, Gary White and Mark Nuttall formed the midfield trio, with Paul Hennessy on the left, Jamie Richards on the right, and Sam Broadway leading the line after scoring back-to-back hat-tricks in his previous two outings. Mark Doyle, John Fowler and player-manager for the day, Houlihan, started on the bench, while Gary White captained the side for game one in the absence of Rob Baker.
The game began scrappily, with neither side creating clear opportunities, but after around ten minutes an unfortunate own goal handed Daya the lead. That breakthrough settled the hosts, who quickly began to threaten on the counter attack. Broadway was looking lively, and it was no surprise when he doubled Daya's advantage with a composed finish. Just before the scheduled water break, he struck again to make it 3-0.
As planned, Daya rotated the squad in the heat. Houlihan replaced Costa Plaza, Doyle came on for Bernardo, and Fowler took over from Skwierz. The teams switched ends, and with it the momentum shifted. Hondon began to enjoy more possession and forced Sharratt into a couple of smart saves before eventually pulling a goal back to make it 3-1.
Hondon continued to press, but Daya remained dangerous on the break. Broadway raced clear once more but couldn't quite finish, while another flowing move somehow failed to produce a fourth goal from close range. Eventually, the decisive moment arrived. Broadway was sent through again on goal, his attempted chip over the keeper was saved, but the rebound fell kindly and he coolly slotted home from a tight angle to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1.
Daya managed the closing stages professionally, with Bernardo returning to the field for Niko in defence. Hondon created a few half chances, but the final whistle confirmed an impressive 4-1 victory for the hosts.
Game 2
Hondon Nieves CF 0-1 Chaskic FC
Hondon had little time to recover before facing Chaskic FC. It proved to be another entertaining contest, with Chaskic taking the lead through former Daya player Ray Jones, who calmly finished from close range.
Chaskic played some attractive football and looked the more likely to score again, although they were unable to find the second goal. Jones came closest, racing through one-on-one with the keeper only to drag his effort agonisingly wide. Hondon rallied late on but could not find an equaliser, in turn the Club de Fútbol Hondón de las Nieves goalkeeper was in inspired form, pulling off an impressive double save from what looked like a certain goal. In the end Chaskic secured a narrow 1-0 victory to set up a winner-takes-all final against the hosts.
Game 3

Having enjoyed a break while their rivals battled through the midday heat, Daya made several changes for the final match. Niko and Mark Doyle started in central defence, with John Fowler captaining the side from left-back and Houlihan operating on the right. The midfield consisted of Josh Fazzino, Gary White and Sam Broadway, with Paul Hennessy on the right, Piotr Skwierz on the left, and Bernardo leading the attack. Jamie Richards and Mark Nuttall began on the bench, while Aaron Costa Plaza turned out for an injury-hit Chaskic side.
The game never really flowed for Daya, who struggled to retain possession and create meaningful chances. Chaskic enjoyed spells of pressure, with Ray Jones testing his luck from distance, although Sharratt remained largely untroubled. The Daya defence held firm, limiting their opponents to speculative efforts, while Broadway occasionally threatened on the counter attack.
At the water break, Doyle was replaced by Nuttall, Bernardo dropped back into defence, and Richards came on for Hennessy. With over twenty minutes remaining, Daya knew they were still on course to lift the trophy but wanted to finish the tournament strongly.
The final stages became increasingly scrappy. Daya launched several promising counter attacks, but the final pass was often missing. Fazzino fired narrowly wide from distance, while the Chaskic goalkeeper denied Richards. As tired legs began to show, Chaskic looked the more likely to break the deadlock. Their centre forward headed just wide from close range before Sharratt produced an outstanding block from a corner and a terrific one on one save to keep the scores level.
The referee's final whistle brought the tournament to an end, with Daya finishing top on goal difference. However, both teams agreed to settle the day with a penalty shoot-out to decide an outright winner.
Penalty Shoot-Out Drama
Penalties are always a lottery, but Daya had confidence in Jacob Sharratt, despite him spending much of the season as an outfield player. Chaskic FC, boasting one of the league's best goalkeepers, were equally optimistic.
Chaskic converted first before Mark Doyle confidently sent the keeper the wrong way to level at 1-1. Chaskic again scored, and Bernardo responded with another composed finish. The turning point came when former Daya player Ray Jones fired wide, handing the advantage to the hosts. Josh Fazzino made no mistake to put Daya ahead 3-2.
Chaskic converted their fourth penalty despite Sharratt getting close, before Jamie Richards found the top corner under pressure to restore Daya's lead. Chaskic again equalised, leaving one final kick to decide the trophy. After a brief moment of confusion over the order, Piotr Skwierz stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to seal a 5-4 shoot-out victory.
Looking Ahead
Penalties may not always be the ideal way to settle a competition, but Daya could take great satisfaction from five expertly taken spot-kicks and another clean sheet in open play. The club's first piece of silverware is a welcome achievement, although everyone involved knows there are bigger goals to chase in the seasons ahead.
Above all, it was a fantastic morning of football shared between three excellent clubs. A huge thank you goes to Alex for refereeing, to Carlos and everyone at Chaskic FC, and to Hondon Nieves CF for helping make the day such a success. We look forward to meeting again soon.
Daya may have been slightly disappointed with their final performance, but with several players carrying knocks and a lack of recent training, it was still a commendable effort in difficult conditions. Most importantly, everyone got valuable minutes on the pitch and represented the shirt with pride.
There is still plenty to learn and plenty to build, but if this group stays together and adds a little more quality over the summer and commit through the good and bad times, there are genuine reasons to be optimistic.

Justo cuando parecía que los jugadores del Daya Nueva Veteranos CF estaban disfrutando de un merecido descanso veraniego, decidieron volver a calzarse las botas. A mediados de junio, con el sol brillando intensamente, muchos pensarían que lo ideal sería pasar la mañana en la playa o refugiados bajo una buena sombra. Sin embargo, para tres equipos de la zona no había mejor lugar que un campo de fútbol.
Daya Nueva Veteranos recibió en La Puebla a Hondon Nieves CF y Chaskic FC para disputar un torneo triangular de final de temporada. El objetivo era sencillo: reunir a los equipos, disfrutar del fútbol y, de paso, empezar a recuperar la forma física de cara a la próxima campaña. El formato consistió en tres partidos de 45 minutos, con un trofeo en juego para el campeón.
Los Veteranos de Daya no habían vuelto a entrenar desde su último encuentro liguero, disputado el 24 de mayo, y el equipo afronta ahora un periodo de transición de cara al inicio de la nueva temporada en septiembre. Entre bajas, incorporaciones y cambios dentro del club, la prioridad es volver a disfrutar del fútbol, dejar a un lado las distracciones extradeportivas y reforzar el compromiso con los entrenamientos y los partidos.
Son muchas las preguntas que se plantean durante el verano. ¿Es necesario reforzar la plantilla? ¿Cuántos jugadores hacen falta? ¿Y qué perfil de futbolistas y personas encajaría mejor en el proyecto? Tras casi tres años de existencia, el club ha mostrado una evolución positiva, pero todavía queda trabajo por hacer para consolidar una identidad de equipo fuerte.
Con muchas cosas funcionando bien fuera del terreno de juego, ahora es el momento de consolidar una estructura deportiva sólida y asegurarse de que todos reman en la misma dirección. Además, con los cambios previstos en el formato de la LFVA para la próxima temporada, el Daya Nueva debe seguir mirando hacia adelante.
Daya Nueva Veteranos 4-1 Hondon Nieves CF
El primer rival del día fue Hondon Nieves CF. Apenas unas semanas antes, Hondon se había impuesto con autoridad por 3-0 en un amistoso, un resultado que los jugadores del Daya querían dejar atrás. Aun así, el equipo llegaba con buenas sensaciones después de enlazar dos empates ligueros y mantener la portería a cero en ambos encuentros, reflejo de una clara mejoría en organización y trabajo colectivo.
El conjunto local presentó una plantilla de garantías, con el debut en casa del nuevo fichaje Niko. Aaron Costa Plaza regresó al equipo tras haber dejado el club a mitad de temporada, mientras que Bernardo reapareció por primera vez desde abril. La baja de última hora del portero obligó a reorganizar los planes, pero con Jacob Sharratt disponible, el equipo sabía que estaba en buenas manos.
Daya formó con Sharratt en portería; Aaron Costa Plaza en el lateral derecho, Piotr Skwierz en el izquierdo, y Bernardo y Niko como pareja de centrales. En el centro del campo actuaron Josh Fazzino, Gary White y Mark Nuttall, con Paul Hennessy por la izquierda, Jamie Richards por la derecha y Sam Broadway como referencia ofensiva, después de haber firmado dos hat-tricks en sus dos últimos partidos. Mark Doyle, John Fowler y el jugador-entrenador Houlihan esperaban su oportunidad en el banquillo, mientras que Gary White ejercía de capitán en ausencia de Rob Baker.
El partido comenzó igualado y con pocas ocasiones claras, hasta que, tras unos diez minutos, un desafortunado gol en propia puerta adelantó al Daya. Ese tanto dio confianza a los locales, que empezaron a encontrar espacios al contragolpe. Broadway estaba especialmente inspirado y no tardó en ampliar la ventaja con una buena definición. Poco antes de la pausa para hidratarse, volvió a marcar para colocar el 3-0 en el marcador.
Tal y como estaba previsto, el Daya introdujo varios cambios para repartir minutos en una mañana especialmente calurosa. Houlihan sustituyó a Costa Plaza, Doyle entró por Bernardo y Fowler reemplazó a Skwierz. Tras el cambio de campo, el encuentro cambió de dinámica y Hondon comenzó a crecer, disfrutando de más posesión y obligando a Sharratt a intervenir en varias ocasiones. Finalmente, los visitantes encontraron el premio y recortaron distancias para poner el 3-1.
Hondon siguió insistiendo, aunque el Daya continuaba siendo peligroso al contraataque. Broadway volvió a plantarse solo ante el portero, pero no pudo definir, mientras que otra buena jugada colectiva terminó de manera increíble sin el cuarto gol. Sin embargo, el delantero tendría una nueva oportunidad. Tras otro balón al espacio, intentó superar al guardameta con una vaselina; aunque este detuvo el primer remate, el rechace volvió a caer en sus botas y Broadway no perdonó, completando su hat-trick y estableciendo el definitivo 4-1.
El Daya administró bien los últimos minutos del encuentro, con Bernardo regresando al campo para reforzar la defensa. Hondon dispuso de alguna ocasión aislada, pero el marcador ya no se movería.
Hondon Nieves CF 0-1 Chaskic FC
Hondon apenas tuvo tiempo para recuperarse antes de enfrentarse a Chaskic FC. El encuentro fue muy disputado y se decidió gracias a un gol del exjugador del Daya Ray Jones, que definió con tranquilidad desde el interior del área.
Chaskic practicó un fútbol vistoso y tuvo ocasiones para ampliar la ventaja, especialmente en una acción en la que Jones se quedó solo ante el portero, aunque su disparo salió rozando el poste. Hondon reaccionó en los minutos finales, pero no consiguió igualar el marcador y Chaskic se llevó el triunfo por 1-0, clasificándose para una auténtica final frente a los anfitriones.

Después de descansar mientras sus rivales disputaban el segundo encuentro bajo un calor cada vez más intenso, el Daya introdujo algunos cambios para el último partido. Niko y Mark Doyle formaron en el centro de la defensa, con John Fowler como capitán desde el lateral izquierdo y Houlihan ocupando el derecho. En el centro del campo estuvieron Josh Fazzino, Gary White y Sam Broadway, mientras que Paul Hennessy y Piotr Skwierz actuaron por las bandas y Bernardo ocupó la punta de ataque. Jamie Richards y Mark Nuttall comenzaron desde el banquillo, mientras que Aaron Costa Plaza reforzó a un Chaskic muy castigado por las lesiones.
El partido fue muy igualado y al Daya le costó hacerse con el control del balón. Chaskic llevó la iniciativa durante muchos minutos, aunque la defensa local y Sharratt respondieron con seguridad, limitando a los visitantes a disparos lejanos. Broadway intentó aprovechar algunos contraataques, pero las ocasiones claras fueron escasas.
Tras la pausa para hidratarse, Nuttall sustituyó a Doyle, Bernardo retrasó su posición a la defensa y Richards entró por Hennessy. Con más de veinte minutos todavía por disputarse, el Daya sabía que el empate le bastaba para terminar el torneo con opciones de levantar el trofeo.
Los minutos finales fueron muy intensos. Fazzino probó suerte desde lejos con un disparo que salió por poco, mientras que el portero de Chaskic evitó el gol de Richards. El cansancio comenzó a pasar factura y Chaskic parecía más cerca del gol, primero con un remate de cabeza que salió rozando el poste y, poco después, con una ocasión clarísima tras un córner que Sharratt logró desbaratar con una magnífica intervención.
El árbitro señaló el final del partido y del torneo con empate sin goles. El Daya terminaba primero gracias a la diferencia de goles, aunque ambos equipos acordaron disputar una tanda de penaltis para decidir un vencedor absoluto.
Emoción hasta el final
Los penaltis siempre son una lotería, pero el Daya confiaba plenamente en Jacob Sharratt, que a pesar de haber actuado durante buena parte de la temporada como jugador de campo, volvió a demostrar su compromiso bajo palos.
Chaskic anotó el primer lanzamiento y Mark Doyle respondió con sangre fría para empatar. Bernardo hizo lo propio tras el segundo gol visitante. El momento decisivo llegó cuando Ray Jones envió su disparo fuera, dando ventaja al Daya. Josh Fazzino transformó el siguiente lanzamiento para poner a su equipo por delante.
Chaskic no falló su cuarto penalti, aunque Sharratt estuvo muy cerca de detenerlo. Jamie Richards respondió con un lanzamiento perfecto a la escuadra. Tras el cuarto acierto de Chaskic, toda la responsabilidad quedó en manos del último lanzador del Daya. Después de una pequeña confusión sobre el orden, Piotr Skwierz asumió la responsabilidad y batió al portero con un disparo preciso para sellar el triunfo por 5-4.
Mirando al futuro
Puede que una tanda de penaltis no sea la forma ideal de decidir un torneo, pero el Daya puede sentirse orgulloso de haber convertido sus cinco lanzamientos y de haber mantenido la portería a cero durante el último partido. Es el primer trofeo de la historia del club, un bonito premio que, sin embargo, no debe hacer olvidar que aún quedan objetivos mucho más ambiciosos por alcanzar.
Por encima de todo, fue una magnífica mañana de fútbol compartida entre tres grandes equipos. Nuestro agradecimiento a Alex por su labor como árbitro, a Carlos y a toda la familia de Chaskic FC, y a Hondon Nieves CF por contribuir a una jornada inolvidable. Esperamos volver a encontrarnos muy pronto.
Aunque el Daya no quedó plenamente satisfecho con su actuación en el último encuentro, las molestias físicas acumuladas y la falta de entrenamiento reciente hacen que el balance sea muy positivo. Lo más importante fue que todos los jugadores disfrutaron de minutos sobre el césped y defendieron la camiseta con orgullo.
Todavía queda mucho trabajo por delante, pero si el grupo permanece unido y se incorporan algunos refuerzos de calidad durante el verano, hay motivos para afrontar el futuro con optimismo.
