🇬🇧 It's that time of year again, preseason, it feels like an age since our last competitive game back in May but here we are in the middle of another hot Spanish summer and all eyes are on the new season which is just over a month away. Despite resting, the club never stops with behind the scenes plans from raising sponsorship to acquiring new players and keeping current ones. The boys did take part in a friendly game a few weeks ago but with many still on holiday or unavailable, this weekends tournament in San Bartolome was a great chance for the whole squad to get together and for new faces to get involved.
Our hosts were Veteranos San Bartolomé with fellow LFVA league participants CD Murada Veteranos and new entrants to the league Club de Fútbol Hondón de las Nieves Veteranos involved. The boys at Daya were very familiar with all the opposition so we knew this tournament would be a real test with close run games assured. Availability was good with a squad of 18 making the first game on Friday evening for an 8pm kick off. With temperatures in the mid thirties, use of the whole squad would be essential if we were to get anything as we took on C.D. Murada. The winners would play hosts, San Bartolome, who had beaten Hondon Nieves 5-2 the previous evening, the loser would play the 3rd 4th play off the following day at 6pm. The boys were fully focused on getting the win and making it to the final.
A mix of new faces and familiar ones joined the squad of 18 for matchday one. New goalkeeper Rodrigo, Douglas and Myke made up our new Brazilian trio to bring some flair and colour to the team. Captain Baker, Mark Doyle, Jacob Sharratt, Aaron Costa Plaza, Diego Gomez, Niko, Paul Hennessy and Declan Houlihan made up the defensive panel, Jamie Richards, Jose Gallardo, Dean Richards, Hendrik, Josh Fazzino, Samuel Carlsson, Tony Terroni and Sam Broadway formed midfield and attack giving Daya plenty of options. With more players still unavailable, Daya's preparations are in good health heading into the new season.
Match One Friday August 7th
8PM Kick off
Daya Nueva Veteranos CF VS C.D. Murada
With coach John Coughlin unable to attend it was up to Captain Rob Baker and the committee members of Carlsson, Houlihan and Jamie Richards to take charge of tactics and team selection. The plan was to give each player as many minutes as possible and play them in their preferred positions while keeping a good shape and tactical structure. Rodrigo started in goal with Hennessy at right back, Niko and Baker at centre halves with Jacob Sharratt starting at left back. Midfield saw Jamie Richards start on the right, Josh Fazzino, Hendrick and Samuel Carlsson in the centre, Jose Gallardo on the left with Sam Broadway keen to start where he finished last season in fantastic goalscoring form. The bench was strong with Terroni, Douglas, Myke, Costa Plaza, Diego, Doyle, Dean Richards and Houlihan taking charge on the sidelines carrying a slight calf strain.
On a perfect evening for football, and with high temperatures, the game started fast with Murada showing their intent early on. Daya couldn't quite keep possession of the ball with attacks breaking down, but to be fair the surface was a real talking point. The pitch at San Bartolome is one of the few natural grass pitches in the area but it has seen better days. Despite heavy watering it was hard in places with little grass. A compact pitch, not too dissimilar in size to Daya Nueva, but a low wall surrounding the perimeter was a concern. On such a surface possession football would be tough but Daya tried to play out from the back with Murada pressing and not making it easy.
C.D. Murada got down the channels and whipped some balls into the box without really testing debutant Rodrigo. Calmness was called for by the Daya team and that is exactly what helped Daya take the lead against the run of play after less than ten minutes. A swift counter attack and some nice football from Daya saw the ball played into the box to Broadway who flicked the ball over the keeping after beating the offside trap.
The goal calmed the Daya nerves and they started to play some good football after that. Daya looked a real threat on the break and the midfield trio of Fazzino, Hendrik and Carlsson were breaking up Murada attacks at will. Each time Daya won the ball in midfield it looked like they would punish the Murada defence but that final ball just wouldn't fall for a man in yellow. At the other end Rodrigo was having a great debut with his quality shining through early on. He looked calm and his distribution was first class too. He was called into action on several occasion repelling Murada and it looked like Daya had finally found the keeper we have been searching for all summer. Unfortunately the ball broke to a C.D Murada attacker inside the box to finally beat the keeper with about 30 minutes on the clock. The goal was a real blow, but there was plenty still to come with two evenly matched sides keen to win. Diego came on for Gallardo after the first water break but overall tactics and personnel stayed the same.
Half time came with the score at 1-1, and at this stage you could sense the next goal would be crucial in deciding the result. Daya however were confident and freshened up the team with Fazzino, Carlsson and Hendrik making way for Dean Richards, Douglas and Myke in midfield. Terroni came on the left with Diego dropping back to left back. Jamie Richards stayed on the right with Broadway up front and Aaron Costa Plaza came in for Hennessy at right back. The second half started with Daya passing the ball through midfield well despite the congested spaces and difficult surface. The two Brazilians showed great touches early on and confidence, and looked keen to impress. Within five minutes of the restart disaster struck with Terroni going down with a severely sprained ankle from a turn on the rough surface. This pitch was always going to be unforgiving and had now claimed it's first victim. Terroni had to be carried off clearly in pain and out for several weeks. Hendrik came back in as his replacement but only minutes later another bad injury was suffered by new boy Myke. What looks like another bad injury that could keep him out for a long period, we wish him the best, and his luck wasn't in today for a difficult debut. Hopefully we see him back in a Daya shirt soon.
From a difficult debut for one Brazilian, it was shaping up to be a brilliant one at the other end for our goalkeeper Rodrigo. Murada were trying shots from outside the box but our keeper was equal to them all. On a couple of occasions it looked a certain goal for C.D. Murada but Rodrigo was equal to everything. The game was starting to move from end to end with Doyle coming on to replace Niko at the back. Within minutes Doyle would receive a yellow card which would come back to haunt him and Daya near the end. Going forward Daya looked a real threat with Broadway and Richards looking sharp. Gallardo came back on to add more pace but as the minutes passed both teams looked nervy, the next goal would surely decide this?
With less than ten minutes remaining a break into the Daya box saw Doyle just miss the ball and catch the C.D. Murada attacker. A penalty was immediately signalled and a second yellow made the situation go from bad to worse with Daya forced to see out the remaining minutes with 10 men. Just when it looked like everything was lost up stepped Rodrigo to be the hero, a wonderful save to his right denying the C.D. Murada penalty taker to wild scenes on the Daya bench, it was turning out to be an amazing debut from Daya's new number 1!
The final minutes saw Daya drop back a little, understandably, but they still looked dangerous on the counter. The remaining minutes saw no further goals so straight to penalties and only 3 were to be taken by each side for this tournament format. With Rodrigo looking unbeatable, Daya were confident, and having won a penalty shoot out with five perfect penalties back in early June, the boys from the Vega Baja in yellow and black felt calm. Murada stepped up to score the first penalty before Jamie Richards stuck beautifully into the top right hand corner leaving the keeper with no chance.
Murada stepped up for penalty number two which was sent high and wide to give Daya the advantage. Up stepped Broadway who smashed home past the keeper to make it 2-1, and match point Daya. Murada simply had to score but Rodrigo would finish the hero tipping the shot wide to give Daya Nueva the win. A hard fought win on a difficult pitch, and some bad injuries, but the boys would make it to the final the following evening. Overall, a hard fought battle that could have went either way, Rodrigo certainly the hero on the night. Now onto the final!
Match Two Saturday August 8th
8pm Kick Off
San Bartolome Veteranos vs Daya Nueva Veteranos CF
Twenty four hours later the boys would line up for game number two and a final against the hosts. The home side had an extra days rest, but Daya again had a large squad to choose from so no excuses. Coach John Coughlin was back on the sidelines and Bobby was there to put us through our paces with some pre-match warm ups, not that getting warm was an issue with temperatures again in the high thirties at 8pm in the evening! Sadly Terroni, Douglas and Myke were unavailable, but otherwise the squad was the same as the previous evening.
The starting line up was Rodrigo in goal, Hennessy at right back with Doyle coming in to join Niko, Captain Baker and Sharratt at left back to make it a five with wing backs. Midfield saw Carlsson start with Hendrik and Dean Richards with Jamie Richards and Sam Broadway up front. Another strong bench saw Gallardo, Fazzino, Houlihan, Costa Plaza and Diego. Having seen the pitch surface, coach Coughlin felt it was best to go more direct with slick passing from the back quite difficult with an unpredictable pitch and notable bobble. The hosts obviously would be more used to the surface, but still Daya were confident having beaten San Bartolome in the league in the previous two seasons. Daya's only previous meeting with the hosts at the venue was our very first competitive league game back in 2023 with the hosts running out 3-0 winners.
Early stages saw San Bartolome see lots of possession in their own back line with Daya setting up fairly deep, on a hot evening, the boys seemed to be conserving some energy with very little pressing in the attacking areas. This gave the home side the chance to pick out long and short range passes at ease from the back. The home side had some threat going forward with a speedy winger and dangerous number 10 moving across the Daya back line. There were some nervy moments early on with Rodrigo called into action but disaster struck after only ten minutes with the coaches fears coming true.
Early instructions were to get the ball forward and not play around at the back, from a loose pass the home attacker pounced to get through on goal, Rodrigo made a fabulous stop down low but the rebound fell to the San Bartolome player to stroke home, 1-0 and the worst possible start for Daya. The goal however seemed to wake the boys in yellow up and tackling in midfield became more aggressive and purposeful. The players were getting close to each other and scrapping for their lives. A fantastic break down the Daya right saw Hennessy advance into midfield, he played a great ball out left to the on rushing Sharratt at wing back who had an effort at goal. Much better play and a good combination from right to left stretching the home defence.
Sharratt was starting to enjoy himself and was getting forward at will before his night was cut short with a nasty collision with the low lying wall we had all feared. Fortunately he was ok, with some cuts and bruises, but the change was made with Hennessy moving to the left and Houlihan coming in on the right hand side. Fazzino came on to freshen things up and slowly but surely Daya started to squeeze the opposition and cause more problems for them. A couple of breaks saw Hennessy advance on goal and Broadway and Jamie Richards get some half chances. You felt the goal was coming for Daya but at the other end the defence needed to be sharp with their speedy attackers combining well and getting into the Daya box on a couple of occasions with the offside trap working well. Doyle was winning his aerial duels, alongside Niko and Baker, with Rodrigo a safe pair of hands behind. With about thirty minutes played the breakthrough came for Daya. A shot from outside the box from Broadway was spilled by the home keeper and Hennessy was on hand to finish from close range. The goal gave Daya a real lift and the early nerves were gone.
From then on Daya upped the tempo and looked threatening going forward. Soon after goal number two came with Jamie Richards finishing well in the box. At the other end, the home side were starting to be frustrated as the half ended 1-2 in Daya's favour. Half time was a chance for a breather and cool down with more changes made. Niko made way as Daya went back to a back four with Gallardo coming on on the right hand side of midfield. Fazzino, Carlsson and Hendrik in the middle with Richards on the left and Broadway up front. Daya started the half brightly and went all out for goal number three to make things a little more comfortable. Before long Josh Fazzino struck a free kick from outside the box, too hot to handle for the goalkeeper, with the ball falling to Hendrik inside the box to make it 1-3 and Daya were now in complete control.
Soon after Broadway was released on goal but saw his effort saved and moments later his header was somehow kept out by the keeper. It now looked like one way traffic and another header from Fazzino from a Hennessy corner somehow stayed out. The game was now only going Daya's way but San Bartolome still had threats going forward. The tricky home attacker took on Houlihan down the Daya right and he advanced into the box, Houlihan, not wanting to commit to possibly give away a penalty, saw the ball go past him but Baker covered superbly to relieve the danger. The team working hard in all areas and determined to come away with the trophy.
With half an hour to play disaster then struck, Fazzino received a yellow card for a late challenge in midfield but it looked a harsh decision. The referee then seemed to realise it was Fazzino's second and swiftly produced a red. What looked like a relatively comfortable result was now in jeopardy. To make matters worse the home side struck a wonderful effort from their left into the top corner out of reach of Rodrigo. 2-3 and the home crowd and team were now up for this and could sense a comeback. Wave after wave of San Bartolome attacks now came with the Daya defence under real pressure.
Coach Coughlin put Niko back in for Doyle with Costa Plaza on for Hennessy. Both teams were battling hard for the ball with yellow cards now been shown and real passion from both benches. At one point the home side refused to give Daya back the ball after the referee stopped play and things started to get heated on and off the pitch. The San Bartolome player shown a yellow card soon after for a rash challenge. Daya were now going direct with long kick outs and clearances from the back, anywhere would do. Still with Gallardo, Richards and Broadway there was a big threat on the break with the home side now pushing men forward. Houlihan had his hands full with midfielders now pushing over to the right creating overloads with Gallardo dropping back to help out. The back four stayed compact and refused to be stretched forcing the home side into shots from outside the box, when they did come Rodrigo made some spectacular saves and was keeping the home side at bay somehow. Time and again he was equal to goal bound efforts with the home crowd and players stunned not to see the net bulge on several occasions.
Temperatures were rising on and off the pitch and the home side were now pressing firmly. From a couple of corners there were some great clearances from Niko and Baker and Costa Plaza relieved the pressure well on the left. Going forward, a quick break saw Gallardo challenged and then colliding with the low wall similar to Sharratt in the first half. Dean Richards then came on but with ten minutes remaining another yellow card to Carlsson saw Daya reduced to nine men! This really would be a heroic effort with two men less on a humid evening.
Houlihan hit a long ball from the back which found Jamie Richards, he beat the offside trap but he was just unable to control the finish. Daya really needed a goal but were finding it hard to get out of their own half. Rodrigo continued to pull off some amazing stops when it looked like San Bartolome would find that equaliser. With two minutes left to play Broadway was found, he beat the offside trap and coolly finished to make it 2-4 and surely game over? To huge relief, Daya had a cushion with very little time left to play. Still the home side pushed forward not giving up.
In previous meetings between the teams each game went to the wire and tonight would be no different. The home crowd had now gone a little flat but they did see their side win a late corner. The Daya team, almost running on empty, had one last big effort to give. The corner was struck across the Daya six yard box and found it's way to a white shirt, he swiveled and hooked the ball past Houlihan on the line to make it 3-4 with surely only seconds remaining.
Daya and their bench were baying for the final whistle, and soon after the restart the referee signalled the end of the game. A game that had everything, goals, collisions, red cards, amazing saves and goals galore. A highly entertaining contest on a difficult pitch that could have gone either way. The battling qualities of the boys in yellow was to be admired, every last player gave their all and judging by the amount of sweat on their soaked jerseys, they didn't hold back. The red cards certainly changed the course of the game but the boys dug deep to hold on with some composed finishing along the way. It was a fantastic game to build some momentum and intensity going into another challenging season in the LFVA. All that was left was to collect the trophy and hopefully it is the first of much silverware in the coming years with the veterans hoping to emulate the wonderful and successful youth system in Daya Nueva.
Thanks to all the teams who took part, Hondon Nieves who finished fourth drawing 2-2 to C.D Murada but losing 2-0 on penalties in the 3rd/4th place game. C.D. Murada who finished third and our gracious hosts who finished second and put on a great show, San Bartolome Veteranos. To the referee over the two days, Jose Carreres, despite sending three of our men off over two games he let the game flow and stayed firm despite a lot of pressure. It's now time to enjoy the victory but the real stuff begins next month.
Everyone who put on a yellow shirt over the two nights should be proud, particularly our new players, and Rodrigo who was undoubtedly man of the match in both games. It lays the foundations for what promises to be a fruitful future, but as we know things change quickly in football. Character is what this team needs, quality does help for sure, but it is fighting to the end and working hard for your teammates that produces results in the end. Egos count for nothing. Building a squad is extremely difficult, there will be twists and turns. Everyone is happy now we have won some silverware but the real test is when times are tough. Hopefully now we have the right ingredients to push on up the table and challenge for trophies in cup competitions. Back to preseason training this week and friendly games planned in the coming weeks.

🇪🇸 Ha llegado de nuevo esa época del año, la pretemporada. Parece que ha pasado una eternidad desde nuestro último partido oficial en mayo, pero aquí estamos, en medio de otro caluroso verano español, con todas las miradas puestas en la nueva temporada, que está a poco más de un mes de comenzar.
A pesar del descanso, el club nunca se detiene. Entre bastidores continúan los planes para conseguir patrocinadores, incorporar nuevos jugadores y mantener a los actuales. Los chicos disputaron un partido amistoso hace unas semanas, pero con muchos jugadores todavía de vacaciones o no disponibles, el torneo de este fin de semana en San Bartolomé era una gran oportunidad para reunir a toda la plantilla y dar entrada a nuevas caras.
Nuestros anfitriones eran los Veteranos San Bartolomé, junto con nuestros conocidos participantes de la liga LFVA, C.D. Murada, y los nuevos integrantes de la liga, Hondón de los Nieves CF. Los chicos de Daya conocían muy bien a todos los rivales, así que sabíamos que este torneo sería una auténtica prueba, con partidos igualados garantizados.
La disponibilidad era buena, con una plantilla de 18 jugadores para el primer partido del viernes por la tarde, con comienzo a las 20:00. Con temperaturas de más de 30 grados, sería esencial utilizar a toda la plantilla si queríamos conseguir algo positivo frente al C.D. Murada.
El ganador se enfrentaría a los anfitriones, San Bartolomé, que habían derrotado a Hondón de los Nieves por 5-2 la noche anterior. El perdedor jugaría el partido por el tercer y cuarto puesto al día siguiente a las 18:00. Los chicos estaban totalmente concentrados en conseguir la victoria y alcanzar la final.
Una mezcla de caras nuevas y conocidas formó la plantilla de 18 jugadores para la primera jornada. El nuevo portero Rodrigo, Douglas y Myke formaban nuestro nuevo trío brasileño, aportando talento, estilo y color al equipo.
El capitán Baker, Mark Doyle, Jacob Sharratt, Aaron Costa Plaza, Diego Gomez, Niko, Paul Hennessy y Declan Houlihan formaban la defensa. Jamie Richards, Jose Gallardo, Dean Richards, Hendrik, Josh Fazzino, Samuel Carlsson, Tony Terroni y Sam Broadway completaban el centro del campo y el ataque, dando a Daya muchas opciones.
Con más jugadores todavía no disponibles, la preparación de Daya de cara a la nueva temporada se encontraba en buenas condiciones.
PARTIDO UNO – VIERNES 7 DE AGOSTO
20:00 – COMIENZO
Daya Nueva Veteranos CF VS C.D. Murada
Con el entrenador John Coughlin sin poder asistir, correspondió al capitán Rob Baker y a los miembros del comité Carlsson, Houlihan y Jamie Richards hacerse cargo de las tácticas y de la selección del equipo.
El plan era dar a cada jugador tantos minutos como fuera posible y utilizarlos en sus posiciones preferidas, manteniendo al mismo tiempo una buena organización y estructura táctica.
Rodrigo comenzó en la portería, con Hennessy como lateral derecho, Niko y Baker como centrales y Jacob Sharratt como lateral izquierdo.
En el centro del campo, Jamie Richards comenzó por la derecha, Josh Fazzino, Hendrik y Samuel Carlsson ocuparon el centro, Jose Gallardo empezó por la izquierda y Sam Broadway estaba deseando comenzar en la posición en la que terminó la temporada pasada, en una magnífica racha goleadora.
El banquillo era fuerte, con Terroni, Douglas, Myke, Costa Plaza, Diego, Doyle, Dean Richards y Houlihan, que se encargaba de la banda mientras sufría una ligera sobrecarga en el gemelo.
En una tarde perfecta para jugar al fútbol, aunque con temperaturas elevadas, el partido comenzó a gran velocidad, con Murada mostrando sus intenciones desde el principio.
Daya no conseguía mantener del todo la posesión y algunos ataques terminaban sin éxito, aunque hay que decir que el estado del terreno de juego fue un factor importante.
El campo de San Bartolomé es uno de los pocos terrenos de césped natural de la zona, pero ha vivido tiempos mejores. A pesar de haber sido regado abundantemente, estaba duro en algunas zonas y tenía poca hierba.
Era un campo compacto, no demasiado diferente en tamaño al de Daya Nueva, pero un muro bajo rodeaba todo el perímetro, lo que suponía una preocupación.
En una superficie así, jugar manteniendo la posesión iba a ser complicado, pero Daya intentó salir jugando desde atrás mientras Murada presionaba y no ponía las cosas fáciles.
El C.D. Murada llegaba por las bandas y enviaba algunos balones al área sin llegar realmente a poner a prueba al debutante Rodrigo.
Daya necesitaba mantener la calma, y precisamente eso ayudó al equipo a adelantarse contra el desarrollo del juego antes de que transcurrieran diez minutos.
Un rápido contraataque y una bonita jugada de Daya llevaron el balón al área, donde Broadway tocó el balón por encima del portero después de superar la línea de fuera de juego.
El gol calmó los nervios de Daya y, a partir de entonces, comenzaron a jugar un buen fútbol.
Daya parecía una amenaza real al contraataque y el trío de centrocampistas formado por Fazzino, Hendrik y Carlsson estaba desbaratando los ataques de Murada a voluntad.
Cada vez que Daya recuperaba el balón en el centro del campo parecía que iba a castigar a la defensa de Murada, pero el último pase nunca terminaba de encontrar a un jugador vestido de amarillo.
En el otro extremo, Rodrigo estaba teniendo un debut fantástico y su calidad se hizo evidente desde el principio.
Se mostraba tranquilo y su distribución era de primera categoría. Tuvo que intervenir en varias ocasiones para repeler los ataques de Murada y parecía que Daya finalmente había encontrado al portero que había estado buscando durante todo el verano.
Por desgracia, el balón cayó en los pies de un atacante del C.D. Murada dentro del área, que finalmente consiguió superar al guardameta cuando habían transcurrido unos 30 minutos.
El gol fue un duro golpe, pero todavía quedaba mucho partido por delante, con dos equipos muy igualados y decididos a ganar.
Diego entró por Gallardo después de la primera pausa para hidratarse, pero en general las tácticas y los jugadores se mantuvieron igual.
El descanso llegó con el marcador 1-1 y, en ese momento, se podía sentir que el siguiente gol sería decisivo para determinar el resultado.
Daya, sin embargo, estaba confiado y refrescó el equipo. Fazzino, Carlsson y Hendrik dejaron su sitio a Dean Richards, Douglas y Myke en el centro del campo.
Terroni entró por la izquierda, mientras Diego retrocedió al lateral izquierdo. Jamie Richards continuó por la derecha, Broadway pasó a jugar como delantero y Aaron Costa Plaza sustituyó a Hennessy como lateral derecho.
La segunda parte comenzó con Daya moviendo bien el balón por el centro del campo a pesar de los espacios reducidos y de la dificultad de la superficie.
Los dos brasileños mostraron buenos controles y confianza desde el principio, y parecían decididos a impresionar.
Sin embargo, cinco minutos después del reinicio llegó el desastre. Terroni cayó al suelo tras sufrir un grave esguince de tobillo al girar sobre la superficie irregular.
Este campo siempre iba a ser implacable y ahora se había cobrado su primera víctima.
Terroni tuvo que ser sacado del campo, claramente dolorido, y estará fuera durante varias semanas.
Hendrik entró de nuevo como sustituto, pero solo unos minutos después Myke, el nuevo jugador, sufrió otra lesión grave.
Parece que se trata de otra lesión importante que podría mantenerlo fuera durante un largo periodo. Le deseamos lo mejor. Hoy la suerte no estuvo de su lado en un debut complicado. Esperamos volver a verlo pronto con la camiseta de Daya.
Mientras el debut de un brasileño se convertía en una experiencia difícil, para nuestro portero Rodrigo estaba tomando forma un debut brillante.
Murada intentaba disparos desde fuera del área, pero nuestro portero estaba a la altura de todos ellos.
En un par de ocasiones parecía que el gol del C.D. Murada era inevitable, pero Rodrigo respondía a todo.
El partido empezaba a convertirse en un ida y vuelta, con Doyle entrando para sustituir a Niko en defensa.
A los pocos minutos, Doyle recibiría una tarjeta amarilla que terminaría persiguiéndole a él y a Daya cerca del final.
En ataque, Daya parecía una auténtica amenaza, con Broadway y Richards mostrando mucha velocidad y peligro.
Gallardo volvió a entrar para aportar más velocidad, pero a medida que pasaban los minutos ambos equipos parecían nerviosos. ¿Sería el siguiente gol el que decidiría el partido?
A menos de diez minutos para el final, una incursión en el área de Daya terminó con Doyle llegando tarde al balón y golpeando al atacante del C.D. Murada.
El árbitro señaló inmediatamente penalti y mostró una segunda tarjeta amarilla, haciendo que la situación pasara de mala a peor, obligando a Daya a disputar los minutos restantes con diez jugadores.
Justo cuando parecía que todo estaba perdido, Rodrigo apareció como héroe.
Con una maravillosa parada hacia su derecha, negó el gol al lanzador del penalti del C.D. Murada, provocando escenas de júbilo en el banquillo de Daya.
¡Se estaba convirtiendo en un debut increíble para el nuevo número 1 de Daya!
Los últimos minutos vieron a Daya retrasarse un poco, comprensiblemente, pero todavía parecía peligroso al contraataque.
No hubo más goles, así que se pasó directamente a los penaltis, con solo tres lanzamientos por equipo debido al formato de este torneo.
Con Rodrigo pareciendo imbatible, Daya estaba confiado. Además, el equipo había ganado una tanda de penaltis con cinco lanzamientos perfectos a principios de junio, por lo que los chicos de la Vega Baja, vestidos de amarillo y negro, se sentían tranquilos.
Murada lanzó el primer penalti y marcó. Jamie Richards fue el siguiente y lo colocó magníficamente en la esquina superior derecha, dejando al portero sin ninguna posibilidad.
Murada lanzó el segundo penalti, que se marchó alto y desviado, dando ventaja a Daya.
Broadway tomó el balón y lo envió con fuerza al fondo de la red, poniendo el marcador 2-1 y dando a Daya el punto de partido.
Murada simplemente tenía que marcar, pero Rodrigo volvió a convertirse en héroe al desviar el lanzamiento fuera, dando a Daya Nueva la victoria.
Una victoria muy trabajada en un campo complicado y con algunas lesiones graves, pero los chicos alcanzarían la final al día siguiente.
En general, fue una batalla muy disputada que podría haber caído de cualquier lado. Rodrigo fue, sin duda, el héroe de la noche.

PARTIDO DOS – SÁBADO 8 DE AGOSTO
20:00 – COMIENZO
San Bartolomé Veteranos vs Daya Nueva Veteranos CF
Veinticuatro horas después, los chicos saltaron al campo para el segundo partido y la final contra los anfitriones.
El equipo local había disfrutado de un día adicional de descanso, pero Daya volvía a contar con una plantilla amplia entre la que elegir, así que no había excusas.
El entrenador John Coughlin estaba de nuevo en la banda y Bobby estaba allí para someternos a un buen calentamiento previo al partido, aunque con temperaturas nuevamente por encima de los treinta grados a las 20:00, entrar en calor no era precisamente un problema.
Por desgracia, Terroni, Douglas y Myke no estaban disponibles, pero el resto de la plantilla era la misma que la noche anterior.
El once inicial estaba formado por Rodrigo en la portería, Hennessy como lateral derecho, Doyle entrando para unirse a Niko, el capitán Baker y Sharratt como lateral izquierdo, formando una línea de cinco con carrileros.
En el centro del campo comenzó Carlsson junto a Hendrik y Dean Richards, mientras que Jamie Richards y Sam Broadway formaban la pareja de ataque.
Otro banquillo fuerte contaba con Gallardo, Fazzino, Houlihan, Costa Plaza y Diego.
Después de haber visto el estado del terreno de juego, el entrenador Coughlin consideró que lo mejor era jugar de forma más directa, ya que los pases rápidos desde atrás eran difíciles sobre una superficie impredecible y con muchos botes del balón.
Los anfitriones obviamente estarían más acostumbrados a la superficie, pero Daya seguía confiado después de haber derrotado a San Bartolomé en la liga durante las dos temporadas anteriores.
El único enfrentamiento previo de Daya con los anfitriones en este campo fue nuestro primer partido oficial de liga en 2023, cuando los locales se impusieron por 3-0.
En los primeros compases, San Bartolomé tuvo mucha posesión en su propia línea defensiva, mientras Daya se colocaba bastante atrás.
En una noche calurosa, los chicos parecían estar conservando energía, con muy poca presión en las zonas ofensivas.
Esto permitió al equipo local realizar pases largos y cortos con facilidad desde atrás.
El equipo local tenía peligro en ataque, con un extremo muy rápido y un peligroso número 10 moviéndose por la línea defensiva de Daya.
Hubo algunos momentos de nerviosismo al principio, con Rodrigo teniendo que intervenir, pero el desastre llegó después de solo diez minutos, haciendo realidad los temores del entrenador.
Las primeras instrucciones eran llevar el balón hacia delante y no jugar demasiado alrededor de la defensa.
Tras un pase suelto, el atacante local aprovechó para plantarse frente a la portería.
Rodrigo realizó una magnífica parada abajo, pero el rechace cayó de nuevo a los pies del jugador de San Bartolomé, que remató para poner el 1-0.
El peor comienzo posible para Daya.
Sin embargo, el gol pareció despertar a los chicos de amarillo, y las entradas en el centro del campo se volvieron más agresivas y decididas.
Los jugadores estaban muy juntos y luchaban por cada balón.
Una fantástica jugada por la derecha de Daya permitió a Hennessy avanzar hacia el centro del campo. Envió un gran balón hacia la izquierda al rápido Sharratt, que avanzaba como carrilero y consiguió disparar a portería.
Mucho mejor juego y una buena combinación de derecha a izquierda que estiró la defensa local.
Sharratt estaba empezando a disfrutar del partido y avanzaba continuamente, hasta que su noche terminó prematuramente tras un fuerte choque con el muro bajo que todos habíamos temido.
Afortunadamente, estaba bien, aunque sufrió algunos cortes y contusiones.
Se realizó el cambio, con Hennessy pasando a la izquierda y Houlihan entrando por la banda derecha.
Fazzino entró para refrescar el equipo y, poco a poco, Daya comenzó a encerrar al rival y a crear más problemas.
Un par de ataques permitieron a Hennessy avanzar hacia la portería, mientras Broadway y Jamie Richards tuvieron algunas oportunidades.
Parecía que el gol de Daya estaba llegando, pero en el otro extremo la defensa tenía que mantenerse alerta.
Los rápidos atacantes locales combinaban bien y llegaron al área de Daya en un par de ocasiones, aunque la trampa del fuera de juego funcionó bien.
Doyle estaba ganando sus duelos aéreos junto a Niko y Baker, mientras Rodrigo ofrecía seguridad bajo los palos.
Cuando habían transcurrido unos treinta minutos llegó el empate de Daya.
Un disparo de Broadway desde fuera del área fue rechazado por el portero local y Hennessy apareció en el lugar adecuado para rematar desde cerca.
El gol dio un gran impulso a Daya y los nervios iniciales desaparecieron.
A partir de ese momento, Daya aumentó el ritmo y empezó a mostrarse peligroso en ataque.
Poco después llegó el segundo gol, con Jamie Richards finalizando muy bien dentro del área.
En el otro extremo, el equipo local empezaba a frustrarse mientras la primera parte terminaba con 1-2 a favor de Daya.
El descanso fue una oportunidad para respirar y refrescarse, con más cambios.
Niko dejó su sitio mientras Daya volvía a una defensa de cuatro, con Gallardo entrando por la derecha del centro del campo.
Fazzino, Carlsson y Hendrik ocuparon el centro, Richards se colocó a la izquierda y Broadway siguió como delantero.
Daya comenzó la segunda parte con mucha energía y fue con todo en busca del tercer gol para hacer el partido un poco más cómodo.
No tardó en llegar.
Un balón bombeado al área desde una falta de Daya, ejecutada por Fazzino, encontró la cabeza de Broadway. El portero realizó una parada, pero el balón cayó a Hendrik, que marcó el 1-3.
Daya tenía ahora el control total del partido.
Poco después, Broadway se quedó solo frente a la portería, pero su disparo fue detenido.
Momentos más tarde, su cabezazo fue rechazado de alguna manera por el portero.
Ahora parecía un dominio absoluto de Daya y otro cabezazo de Fazzino tras un saque de esquina de Hennessy se marchó fuera de forma increíble.
El partido iba claramente en la dirección de Daya, pero San Bartolomé todavía tenía peligro en ataque.
El habilidoso atacante local encaró a Houlihan por la derecha de Daya y consiguió avanzar dentro del área.
Houlihan, sin querer arriesgarse a cometer una falta que pudiera provocar un penalti, dejó pasar el balón, pero Baker cubrió magníficamente para despejar el peligro.
Todo el equipo estaba trabajando duro en todas las zonas del campo y estaba decidido a llevarse el trofeo.
Con media hora por jugar, llegó el desastre.
Fazzino recibió una tarjeta amarilla por una entrada tardía en el centro del campo, aunque pareció una decisión demasiado rigurosa.
El árbitro pareció darse cuenta entonces de que era la segunda amarilla de Fazzino y rápidamente mostró la tarjeta roja.
Lo que parecía un resultado relativamente cómodo volvía a estar en peligro.
Para empeorar las cosas, el equipo local marcó con un magnífico disparo desde su banda izquierda que entró por la escuadra, fuera del alcance de Rodrigo.

El público local y el equipo estaban ahora completamente metidos en el partido y podían sentir que la remontada era posible.
Oleada tras oleada de ataques de San Bartolomé comenzaron a llegar, con la defensa de Daya sometida a una enorme presión.
El entrenador Coughlin volvió a introducir a Niko por Doyle y Costa Plaza sustituyó a Hennessy.
Ambos equipos luchaban con intensidad por el balón, empezaron a aparecer tarjetas amarillas y la pasión se hizo evidente en ambos banquillos.
En un momento determinado, el equipo local se negó a devolver el balón a Daya después de que el árbitro detuviera el juego, y la situación comenzó a calentarse tanto dentro como fuera del campo.
Poco después, un jugador de San Bartolomé recibió una tarjeta amarilla por una entrada imprudente.
Daya comenzó a jugar de forma directa, con despejes y balones largos desde atrás. Cualquier sitio servía.
Aun con Gallardo, Richards y Broadway, Daya seguía teniendo una gran amenaza al contraataque, mientras el equipo local adelantaba cada vez más jugadores.
Houlihan tenía mucho trabajo con los centrocampistas rivales desplazándose hacia la derecha y creando superioridad numérica, mientras Gallardo retrocedía para ayudar.
La defensa de cuatro se mantuvo compacta y se negó a estirarse, obligando al equipo local a intentar disparos desde fuera del área.
Cuando lo conseguían, Rodrigo realizaba algunas paradas espectaculares y mantenía al equipo local a raya de alguna manera.
Una y otra vez respondía a los disparos que iban camino de gol, dejando al público local y a los jugadores sorprendidos al ver que el balón no terminaba dentro de la portería.
Las temperaturas subían tanto dentro como fuera del campo y el equipo local presionaba con fuerza.
En un par de saques de esquina hubo grandes despejes de Niko y Baker, mientras Costa Plaza alivió bien la presión por la izquierda.
En ataque, un rápido contraataque terminó con Gallardo siendo derribado y chocando después con el muro bajo, de forma similar a lo ocurrido con Sharratt en la primera parte.
Dean Richards entró entonces, pero con diez minutos restantes otra tarjeta amarilla para Carlsson dejó a Daya con solo nueve jugadores.
Esto realmente iba a ser un esfuerzo heroico, con dos jugadores menos en una noche húmeda.
Houlihan lanzó un balón largo desde atrás que encontró a Jamie Richards.
Superó la línea de fuera de juego, pero no pudo controlar el remate.
Daya necesitaba desesperadamente un gol, pero estaba teniendo dificultades para salir de su propio campo.
Rodrigo continuaba realizando paradas increíbles cuando parecía que San Bartolomé encontraría el empate.
Con dos minutos por jugar, Broadway recibió el balón, superó la línea de fuera de juego y definió con mucha calma para poner el 2-4.
¿Partido terminado?
Para enorme alivio, Daya tenía ahora una ventaja de dos goles con muy poco tiempo por jugar.
Aun así, el equipo local siguió atacando y no se rindió.
En los enfrentamientos anteriores entre ambos equipos, cada partido había llegado hasta el final, y esta noche no iba a ser diferente.
El público local se había quedado algo apagado, pero todavía vio a su equipo conseguir un último saque de esquina.
El equipo de Daya, prácticamente sin fuerzas, tenía que hacer un último gran esfuerzo.
El córner fue enviado al área pequeña de Daya y llegó a un jugador vestido de blanco, que se giró y enganchó el balón por delante de Houlihan sobre la línea para poner el 3-4.
Con solo unos segundos por jugar.
Daya y su banquillo pedían desesperadamente el pitido final y, poco después de la reanudación, el árbitro señaló el final del partido.
Un partido que lo tuvo todo: goles, choques, tarjetas rojas, paradas increíbles y goles por todas partes.
Un encuentro tremendamente entretenido sobre un terreno de juego complicado que podría haber caído de cualquier lado.
Las cualidades de lucha de los chicos de amarillo fueron dignas de admiración. Todos y cada uno de los jugadores lo dieron todo y, a juzgar por la cantidad de sudor en sus camisetas empapadas, no se guardaron nada.
Las tarjetas rojas cambiaron sin duda el rumbo del partido, pero los chicos dieron un paso adelante para aguantar hasta el final, mostrando además una gran definición en algunos momentos.
Fue un partido fantástico para ganar impulso e intensidad de cara a otra temporada exigente en la LFVA.
Solo quedaba recoger el trofeo y esperar que sea el primero de muchos títulos en los próximos años, con los veteranos esperando emular al maravilloso y exitoso sistema de formación juvenil de Daya Nueva.

Hondón de los Nieves terminó cuarto después de empatar 2-2 con el C.D. Murada, pero perder por 2-0 en los penaltis en el partido por el tercer y cuarto puesto.
C.D. Murada terminó tercero y nuestros magníficos anfitriones terminaron segundos y organizaron un gran torneo: San Bartolomé Veteranos.
Al árbitro de los dos días, Jose Carreres, gracias también. A pesar de expulsar a tres de nuestros jugadores en los dos partidos, dejó que el juego fluyera y se mantuvo firme a pesar de la mucha presión.
Ahora es momento de disfrutar de la victoria, pero lo importante empieza el próximo mes.
Todos los que vistieron la camiseta amarilla durante las dos noches deberían sentirse orgullosos, especialmente nuestros nuevos jugadores y Rodrigo, que sin duda fue el hombre del partido en ambos encuentros.
Esto sienta las bases para lo que promete ser un futuro fructífero, pero como sabemos, las cosas cambian rápidamente en el fútbol.
Lo que este equipo necesita es carácter. La calidad ayuda, por supuesto, pero luchar hasta el final y trabajar duro por tus compañeros es lo que finalmente produce resultados.
Los egos no sirven para nada.
Construir una plantilla es extremadamente difícil y habrá giros y cambios.
Todo el mundo está feliz ahora que hemos ganado un trofeo, pero la verdadera prueba llegará cuando los tiempos sean difíciles.
Esperemos que ahora tengamos los ingredientes adecuados para seguir avanzando en la clasificación y luchar por trofeos en las competiciones de copa.
