Effort often feels heavier than it should.

There is still a prior conviction living in you… effort should feel hard.

I need to push myself, tense my brow, feel tired and exhausted at the end of the day.

The image you carry of what effort should look like will dictate you.
You work for it.
You are employed by it.

It is reflected in movement, posture, breathing.

Why not turn it around and look at that image, that conviction - look it in the eye?
Tweak it. Knead it.
Redesign it so you dictate it.

Once I met an older man who used to be a shepherd and he asked me,
“Olivier, comfortable, is that allowed?”

A question that often arises around efforts in practice is:
“How often should I practice?
How long should I practice?”

An even better question would be:
“When could you integrate the qualities that you are trying to develop through practice more?”

This could be as simple as rewiring your effort in the most mundane:
- Cleaning the kitchen unrushed, 5-10% slower
- Slowing down your talking slightly, not rushing your words.
- Opening your posture the moment you open your mailbox. Practicing your breathing: two-three breaths.

Practice doesn’t exist only in those special moments.
If it does, it’s a hypocrisy.

Throw away the prior conviction and you are saved of that.
Now, who is there to prevent this throw?

It’s a question to look into.
Who is there?
Who is the one that is preventing you from touching your ideas about effort?

As William Blake wrote:
“I need to create a system or I’ll be enslaved by another man’s.”

William Reich kind of countered it:
“The slave driver is yourself.”

Work.
Body.
Mind.
Creativity.
Intelligence.
And therefore also effort have all been likened to machines, to the artificial.

You, surely, are not that.

Unless you have internalized those images

Then you will live within them, from them.
They will be your basis of operation.

In that sense man is being tooled or fooled by its tools.

You imagination acts - you action is based in images.
Why not have a look at them?
They’ll tell you more about “what’s going on” than the stories you’ll see on this screen.

So, what is correct effort to you?

Intensity is not the practice.

Returning to the principles, daily, is.

Finding joy in endless refinement is the thing, the reward, in itself.

The fruits of it I cannot control directly.

My investment in the material, I can.

In-vestment also means to bring more and more of ‘me’ in it.

Each feeling, sensation, thought, image has meaning I can look into.

There’s an antidote to so many of our current obstacles.

Fear of failing, loss of hope, procrastination by perfectionism, losing your own voice, learned helplessness, framing yourself too narrowly.

At the bottom an experience grows that to know myself I need to look to myself from that still point of unknowing.

Myself in action to myself.

The paradox is that there a more and more rooted, though ungraspable sense of I grows.

Vertical just as the letter “I” that, as if walking with a stick that connects me to the ground below me.

It functions as a navigator wherever I go horizontally.

And, yes you can prompt an I.

It will answer, point the way to many of your questions.
It’s quite intelligent, gets constant updates - and you get endless credits.

How do you make it clear to an other that you support their exploration?

When does support turn into expectation?
Support can get annoying, support can feel lacking.

Some perceived the same situation as a completely different universe than an other.
Why? How? What to do about it?

Let's not fall trap to verbal games much longer...

the practice is in the practice.

We work with the body because it's a bit less prone to lies than our mouths.
