I remember it like it was yesterday, that Saturday, September 14th 2013. Oliver had been telling me about Javi for months, and he had also heard about a girl from El Rincón de la Victoria, Julia. Oliver was so enthusiastic about seeing the Málaga skim community grow day after day that I tended to take his words with a bit of distance.
The Faro Skim Contest kicks off, and then comes Javi’s first heat. On his very first wave, he links a shuv-it 180, a roller back, and rides back to the beach with incredible control. I had a real “wow” moment and thought to myself: “Damn, I need to sponsor him right away!!!”
A few hours later, it’s Julia’s turn. Quiet, she didn’t know many people. But once she entered the competition, she bet everything on consistency. She was the only one capable of delivering wave after wave at the same level. At that moment, I told myself that Oliver and I absolutely needed to keep an eye on her.
On that September 14th, 2013, I met two exceptional skimboarders.
