Los últimos fines de semana han sido excelentes para el Orihuela Costa Veteranos. Hace dos semanas vencieron en casa al invicto Jacarilla por 5-3 en la liga y, el pasado fin de semana, los chicos terminaron primero y segundo en un torneo internacional en Pilar de la Horadada, añadiendo así la primera plata del club a sus vitrinas.
Este fin de semana, el equipo buscaba más títulos cuando viajó a Catral para disputar la semifinal de copa. Iba a ser un reto difícil para OCV, ya que Catral les había derrotado 4-1 anteriormente en la temporada en liga. Sin embargo, OCV había ganado 9 de sus últimos 10 partidos, por lo que afrontaban el encuentro con confianza y convencidos de poder dar una buena imagen.
El entrenador Mark Halsey tuvo que tomar algunas decisiones complicadas, ya que el único portero reconocido de OCV, Emilio Calderón, estaba suspendido para el partido y Brian Flaherty no estaba disponible. Paul Gardner también arrastraba un fuerte golpe del torneo del pasado fin de semana. Manu Saquero, que ya había dado un paso al frente para ponerse bajo palos cuando Emilio fue expulsado en la semifinal, volvió a ser el elegido para ponerse los guantes. Aitor Gallego Ramírez entró en el lateral derecho.
OCV presentaba un gran potencial ofensivo con Mo, Rabah, Danny, Youcef y Paul Mahoney como titulares. El trabajo defensivo en el centro del campo recaía sobre Vincent Stanus, mientras que Mikey, el capitán Paul de Groot y Paul Gardner acompañaban a Aitor en defensa.
El partido comenzó a las 16:30 bajo unas temperaturas cálidas y con una asistencia de público bastante buena. Ambas aficiones animaban con fuerza mientras el encuentro arrancaba con el típico ambiente de una semifinal: muchas entradas, intensidad y un ritmo muy alto desde el pitido inicial.
OCV pronto comenzó a mostrar mayor calidad, con Mo y Rabah causando muchos problemas a Catral cada vez que atacaban juntos por la banda izquierda. Paul Mahoney también encontraba espacios por la derecha en algunos momentos y estaba poniendo en serios aprietos a su marcador. De hecho, tras un pase de Rabah, Paul Mahoney superó a su defensor y se internó en el área, regateó al portero que salía a su encuentro y estuvo cerca de marcar desde un ángulo muy cerrado, pero el balón acabó rozando la red lateral. Hubo un momento de gran preocupación cuando Paul chocó contra el muro situado detrás de la portería, aunque afortunadamente pudo continuar jugando.
Catral recurría a balones largos por las bandas para que sus delanteros los persiguieran, pero la defensa de OCV y, en particular, Manu en la portería, estaban resolviendo bien estas acciones. Las únicas intervenciones de Manu llegaron en disparos lejanos que atrapó con comodidad.
Ya en los últimos minutos de la primera parte, ambos equipos vieron una tarjeta amarilla después de que la paciencia del árbitro finalmente se agotara. Descanso: 0-0.
Juan Ignacio entró al descanso sustituyendo a Youcef, que ya había sido amonestado, para reforzar el centro del campo junto a Vincent.
En la segunda parte, Catral contó con un fuerte viento a favor, lo que hizo que intensificaran aún más su estrategia de balones largos. Esto obligó a los dos Pauls en el centro de la defensa a emplearse a fondo en el juego aéreo, al igual que Michael Warner en el lateral izquierdo, ya que muchos ataques llegaban por su banda.
OCV jugó por momentos un fútbol excelente. En una de las acciones, Mo volvió a superar en velocidad a su marcador antes de poner un magnífico centro para Danny, que conectó un gran cabezazo pero no logró bajarlo lo suficiente; el balón superó al portero y pasó rozando el larguero.
Después, otra buena jugada terminó con un balón enviado nuevamente por la banda izquierda, donde apareció otro de los suplentes, Ray Jones. Este controló con calma y puso un precioso centro al segundo palo donde parecía que Juan Ignacio solo tendría que empujar el balón a la red, pero el pase se le escapó por muy poco antes de que pudiera llegar.
OCV estaba apretando cada vez más, pero seguía sin encontrar el gol.
Catral estaba causando muchos problemas con sus balones largos. Ganaban faltas y córners constantemente y metían el balón al área siempre que podían. Sin embargo, Manu Saquero estaba inspirado; cada vez que el balón llegaba al área, encontraba la manera de intervenir y despejarlo, ya fuera con un puñetazo o desviándolo con la mano.
Entonces llegaron dos momentos clave. Catral volvió a colgar un balón largo al área que cayó para su corpulento delantero. Paul Gardner entró con fuerza y despejó el balón. Los jugadores de Catral reclamaron penalti con insistencia, pero el árbitro señaló inmediatamente que no había nada y desestimó las protestas.
Unos cinco minutos después, el número 7 de Catral avanzó con el balón superando a un par de rivales. Dio un mal toque que permitió a Paul de Groot salir desde la defensa y entrar al tackle, ganando claramente el balón primero. Sin embargo, el jugador de Catral continuó la acción con la pierna alta y de forma peligrosa. El árbitro expulsó al jugador de Catral mientras PDG permanecía en el suelo con mucho dolor y molestias, ¡y con la marca perfecta de una bota en la espinilla!
OCV tenía ahora 15 minutos por delante jugando contra diez hombres. ¿Podrían aprovechar la ventaja? ¡Claro que sí! A diez minutos del final, Rabah recogió el balón por el centro y filtró un precioso pase para Mo, que ahora se había desplazado hacia la banda derecha. Mo superó en velocidad a su marcador y llegó antes que el portero de Catral, tocando el balón para esquivarlo y, con mucha calma, empujándolo después a la red vacía desde una posición escorada.
Esto desató escenas de auténtica euforia entre los jugadores, el cuerpo técnico y los aficionados de OCV, aunque todavía quedaban unos diez minutos por jugar. Catral continuó enviando balones largos hacia adelante, adelantó aún más sus líneas y probó absolutamente de todo para intentar encontrar el empate con diez jugadores. La defensa de OCV y su portero tuvieron que mantenerse firmes, realizando entradas y bloqueos decisivos en el último momento para resistir la presión de Catral.
Entonces llegó la jugada que sentenció el partido. De una manera casi idéntica a la del primer gol, Rabah volvió a filtrar un pase para Mo, quien se deshizo de su marcador tocando el balón hacia adelante y superándolo en velocidad. Una vez más, el portero salió a achicar espacios, pero otra vez Mo llegó antes al balón, lo regateó y definió a puerta vacía desde una posición escorada. ¡2-0 para OCV y partido decidido!
Poco después, el árbitro señaló el final del encuentro y los jugadores de OCV pudieron celebrar juntos y con todos los aficionados que habían acudido a apoyarles.
Ahora los chicos tienen una final de copa por delante para poner el broche de oro a la temporada. Algunos jugadores necesitan recuperarse de golpes y molestias físicas, pero hay mucha ilusión en el equipo de cara a la final contra Jacarilla, que se disputará el domingo 31 de mayo.

The last few weekends have been great for Orihuela Costa Veteranos. Two weeks ago they beat unbeaten Jacarilla at home 5-3 in the league and then last weekend the boys finished first and second in an International tournament at Pilar de La Horadada to add the clubs first silverware to the trophy cabinet.
This weekend the boys were in search of more silverware when they travelled away to Catral in the cup semifinal. This was going to be a tough challenge for OCV after Catral beat them 4-1 earlier in the season in the league. However, OCV have won 9 of their last 10 games so were confident of giving a good account of themselves.
Manager Mark Halsey had some difficult decisions to make, with OCV’s only recognized goalkeeper Emilio Calderon suspended for the game and Brian Flaherty unavailable. Paul Gardner was also carrying a heavy knock from last weekends tournament. Manu Saquero was the player who stepped up to go in goal when Emilio got sent off in the semifinal and he was chosen again to take the gloves. Aitor Gallego Ramirez coming in at rightback.
OCV were strong in attack with Mo, Rabah, Danny, Youcef and Paul Mahoney all starting. The defensive work in midfield was going to be done by Vincent Stanus, with Mikey, captain Paul de Groot and Paul Gardner joining Aitor in defence.
The game started in warm conditions at 4:30pm with a decent sized crowd in attendance. There was vocal support for both sides as the game started in typical semifinal fashion, with lots of tackles being put in and the pace of the game was fast from the word go.
OCV soon began to show the most quality though, with Mo & Rabah causing Catral lots of problems when they attacked together down the left flank. Paul Mahoney was finding space on the right at times also and was giving his fullback some serious questions to answer. Indeed it was from a Rabah pass that Paul Mahoney burst passed his marker and into the area, going round the on rushing keeper and narrowly hitting the side netting as he tried to score from a tight angle. There was a horrible moment of worry though as Paul collided with the wall behind the goal, but thankfully he was able to continue.
Catral were resorting to long balls down the channels for their forwards to chase but the OCV defence and in particular Manu in goal were coping with these long balls. The only time Manu had to make saves was from long range shots which he gathered comfortably.
Late in the first half both sides picked up a yellow card each after the referee’s patience finally wore off. Half time 0-0.
Juan Ignacio came on at halftime for Youcef who had been booked, to sure up the midfield with Vincent.
In the second half Catral had a strong breeze with them, which meant the long ball plan intensified, meaning the two Pauls in central defence had to do an awful lot of heading in the second half, as did Michael Warner at leftback with lots of attacks coming down his side.
OCV played some great football at times, one attack saw Mo once again outpace his marker before playing in a brilliant cross to Danny, who got a great connection with his header but just couldn’t keep it down, beating the keeper and the crossbar by inches.
Then another nice move, saw the ball again played down the left wing, where another sub Ray Jones was, he composed himself and played a lovely cross into the far post where it looked like Juan Ignacio would tap the ball home, only for it to just pass him by before he arrived.
OCV were turning the screw now, but just couldn’t find the goal.
Catral were causing problems with their long balls, they were winning free kicks and corners and putting the ball into the penalty box whenever they could. Manu Saquero was in inspired form though, every-time they launched it in, he found a way to get to the ball and either, punch or slap it away.
Then came two key moments, Catral again worked the ball long into the box where it fell for their big striker, Paul Gardner challenged strongly and cleared the ball, Catral were sure it was a penalty, but the referee immediately said no and waved away their protests. About five minutes later, the Catral number 7 carried the ball forwards passed a couple of players, he took a bad touch which allowed Paul de Groot the opportunity to step out of defence and make a tackle, cleanly winning the ball first, only for the Catral number 7 to follow through high and dangerously. The referee sent the Catral player off while PDG was in a lot of pain and discomfort on the floor with a perfect foot print on his shin!
OCV now had 15 minutes left against ten men. Could they make this advantage count? They sure could! With ten minutes to go, Rabah picked up the ball centrally before playing a lovely ball through for Mo who had moved over onto the right hand side now. Mo outpaced his marker and beat the Catral keeper to the ball, knocking it around him and then calmly rolling the ball into the empty net from out wide.
This sparked jubilant scenes amongst the OCV players, management and fans but there was still around ten minutes left to play. Catral continued to pump the ball forwards long, they threw more players forward and were trying everything to find an equaliser with ten men. The OCV defence and keeper had to stand firm, with last ditch tackles and blocks being put in from everyone to keep out Catral. Then came the match winning moment, in almost identical style, Rabah played a ball to Mo, who knocked it past his man, burst past him, again the keeper came out but again Mo got to the ball before him, rounded him and slotted it into an empty net from out wide. 2-0 to OCV and game over!
Shortly afterwards the referee blew his full time whistle and the OCV players were able to celebrate with each other and everyone who was there to support them.
The boys have given themselves a cup final to look forward to now to finish the season off! A few of them need to shake off some knocks and injuries, but there’s lots to look forward to for the squad as they can plan to face Jacarilla in the final on Sunday May 31st.
