A “black day” with Bart & Louis is back!

Every day is special in Calpe, but today had that little extra spark. Monday is normally not a cycling day, but at 9:15 a.m. we were there again – ready for an extra ride with Cycling Friends Calpe.

The surprise of the day? Bart! A friend from the cycling club in Belgium, suddenly joining us here. An unexpected but very welcome sight on this sunny Monday morning. And on top of that: Louis was back! Our figurehead, our iron man – welcome back Louis!

We started with 10 riders and headed towards the Poggio, where we briefly ended up in a group of young riders. We rolled on to Xaló, where we climbed the Bernia together. Via Pinos and Lleus, we made our way back to Calpe, where the terrace was calling.

And, as always, the atmosphere was fantastic. Pablo the Argentinian, his wife, Bart T and I stayed a bit longer. Now… personally, I work with “green days” (no alcohol) and “red days” (alcohol days).
Today? A black day.
The reason: 7 Duvels. The best beer in Belgium, but also a silent destroyer of green intentions.

But hey, that won’t stop us! Tomorrow we’re back on the bike, heading towards Dénia.
Everyone is welcome at 9:15 a.m. at Baguet.

Sportive regards,
JP

Sunday Ride Report – December 7, 2025 – Direction Xàbia

This morning it felt like we were back on the cold side again… or maybe it’s because I’ve been staying here for a long period that I now get cold much faster. In any case, today turned out to be a relaxed ride for the 9:15 group.

We rode towards Xàbia, and today Geert joined us again. He is back in Calpe – welcome back, Geert!
Unfortunately, we also had some less pleasant news… No less than four regular riders are leaving Calpe for now: our duo Chris & Kimberly from Texas, Leon – Jan’s neighbor from the Netherlands – and also Johan from Ostend.
Chris and Kimberly will return in March, Leon sometime in April. We’ll miss you all, but luckily we’ll see each other again soon!

As mentioned, it was a calm ride and the weather was beautiful. Due to a traffic change in Xàbia, we had to adjust our route, and Geert did an excellent job leading the way. This will now become the new route that we will ride every four weeks on Sundays.

Once back at Baguet, all the cycling groups that depart from there arrived one by one. A completely full terrace! And there I suddenly spotted Pablo from Argentina with his wife. They rode with us last year and now came by again to see about riding this week with the Cycling Friends.
Some riders leave, others arrive… that’s just how it goes in Calpe.

For the rest, I wish everyone a pleasant evening.
Tomorrow, Monday, I will ride together with Eddy, Danny and the Argentinian couple at 9:15 a.m. for an extra ride. Everyone is welcome to join!
The rides for Tuesday and Thursday will be online soon.

Greetings,
JP

Report Tuesday 2 December & Thursday 4 December – Cycling Friends Calpe
Better late than never!

Here is the long-awaited report of the last two rides of Cycling Friends Calpe.

Tuesday 2 December – Towards Tàrbena & Coll de Rates

Tuesday featured a challenging ride towards Tàrbena, with the goal of reaching the top of the famous Coll de Rates. There was a great turnout: at 9:15 am at Baguet we had a nice group ready to roll. John also introduced three Dutch cycling friends, including a professional elite women rider, who joined us for the ride.

From the start towards Callosa, the pace was immediately high. Once heading towards Bolulla, everyone found their own rhythm to tackle the climb up to Tàrbena. And once again there he was: Speedy Gonzales, also known as Danny. For the second ride in a row, Danny showed that climbing is truly his specialty.

I also rode a strong climb myself, as did Rich, who surprised everyone with a very strong performance — and yes, that deserves to be mentioned too, it doesn’t always have to be about his Kwarmont beers!

In Tàrbena, the group regrouped before continuing towards the Coll de Rates. After the descent towards Benigembla, we enjoyed a well-deserved coffee stop.

After that, Gerke and I decided to slightly adjust the route: instead of the short side of the Camacho, we took the longer climb. Gerke rode that climb incredibly strong. From Alcalí onwards, you almost feel like you’re already home — you can practically “smell” Calpe — even though there are still about 20 kilometers to go.

Back at the terrace of Baguet, we spent a long time chatting about this beautiful ride. One to remember for sure!

Thursday 4 December – Alternative Ride Around Calpe

The planned ride towards Tollos had to be cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. Still, we didn’t give up and rode an alternative route around Calpe with a group of about 10 cyclists.

After about 60 km, just 5 km from our home base, it started to rain lightly. Eddy and I decided to stop there, while a few others continued for an extra 30 km.
But the goal of the day was clear: “Better something than nothing.” And that mission was certainly accomplished.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow I’ll be at Baguet at 9:15 am for the Tapas Ride or the Velosol Ride.
On Sunday, if the weather is good, we’ll be riding towards Xàbia.

Wishing everyone a great evening, and see you soon!
Sporting regards,

Report Sunday, November 30 – Speedy Gonzales the USA, 3 strong ladies and lots of cycling fun

It was another lively and enjoyable Sunday morning. At 9:15 a.m., 14 cyclists were ready for the ride towards Sorell. Earlier in the day, at 9 o’clock, two other groups had already left: one heading to Cap de la Nau and the other to Villajoyosa.

In our group we were pleasantly surprised to see Gerke and Carine, who—after their tough 200 km ride on Saturday—were still present. Impressive! We also welcomed a few new riders: someone from the USA, and a certain Danny, who quickly became the character of the day.

Normally, you shouldn’t judge someone by their appearance—something I’ve learned thanks to our own Dirk, also known as the mountain goat. But Danny… small in size, big in spirit. Afterwards, I can confidently say: he must be family of Speedy Gonzales! He fluttered around, chatting away, all while holding an average speed of over 30 km/h. And anyone who rides here knows: that’s tough on these roads.

Danny, you’re more than welcome in our group—we’re going to have a lot of fun together.

Also standing out once again were our three ladies, who kept up impressively well despite the high pace. Great performance!

Halfway through, we stopped at the Pensionistas in Beniarbeig, where they once again lived up to their reputation: €38 for 14 drinks and 8 bocadillos. Unbelievable—see photo.

After the break, we rode back to the terrace at Baguet, where Chris from the USA was treated to a “Happy Birthday” song, and where everyone stayed a while to chat.

Then a slightly less cheerful note: today was the last ride for our super duo Rob & Stephani. But no worries—they’ll be back in ten days and will rejoin the 9:15 group. The group that not only rides fast but also has lots of fun and keeps meeting new cyclists—which always brings new stories. Wonderful, isn’t it?

A lot of text today, but only one photo—due to a shortage of photographers.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, there’s another ride at 9:15, and on Thursday we’ll be riding to Tollos.

Wishing everyone a great day and looking forward to the next ride.

Kind regards,
JP – from the 9:15 group

Ride Report – October 30, 2025

Cycling Friends Calpe

First of all, sorry for the late ride report.
Two small issues today:
1️⃣ I stayed a bit too long on the sunny terrace at Baguet – it was just too nice to leave.
2️⃣ My wife has gone back to Belgium to visit her mother, so I had to cook my own dinner… which took a bit longer than expected 😅

But here it is — the report of a truly wonderful ride!

As always, we rode up to Baguet, where 12 cyclists set off at 9:15 a.m.
A special start today: Bart from Baguet joined us with his wife, and one of the original founders of Cycling Friends Calpe, Winfried. It was great to have him riding with us again!

The atmosphere was excellent from the beginning — and that was needed, because we had quite a challenge ahead. On the menu:

Alt de Finestrat,

Tudons via Relleu,

Confrides,
plus plenty of other climbing kilometers in between. A tough one! 💪

Also joining us today was Chris from Texas, and I’d like to thank him especially — after the Tudons climb, he treated the entire group during our coffee stop. What a gesture, thanks Chris! 👏

It turned out to be a day to remember.
Winfried was proud (and rightly so) that he managed to complete such a demanding ride at his age.
The rest of the group returned to Baguet tired but happy — everyone had ridden at their own pace and enjoyed the day in their own way.

How lucky we are to ride here… surrounded by those beautiful mountains, in such stunning nature. The views never stop amazing us. 🌄

Today’s total: over 120 km, and every kilometer worth it!
Tomorrow we have our Tapas Ride to La Nucia, to visit Tono.
Everyone is welcome — start at 9:15 a.m. from Baguet.

Wishing everyone a nice evening!
Sportive greetings,
JP – who only has good intentions and came here to ride his bike 😉

🇬🇧 Ride Report – Coll de Rates, a Midweek Surprise!

Sometimes things just happen on the spur of the moment — last night I quickly decided to post an extra ride. My wife is in Belgium visiting her mother, so… why not? 😉
Today’s route was a classic around Calpe: Coll de Rates via Tàrbena — always a good choice for a beautiful day on the bike.

Despite the late announcement, seven riders showed up: Gerke and Carine, Gino, a friend of Rich from the UK, and Chris and Kimberly from Texas, USA.
We kept a very relaxed pace, perfect for enjoying the scenery.

We rode through Callosa towards Coll de Rates. In Tàrbena we stopped for a coffee at the well-known “weed bar” — always good for a laugh 😄.
After that, Kimberly showed that she can really ride! Her pace was strong and steady — very impressive for a woman of her age. 💪

Once at the top, it was time to enjoy the descent back to Calpe, where we all had a drink together. What a great day — it doesn’t get much better than that! 🍻

Tomorrow will be tougher: we’re heading to Relleu with an extra loop over Tudons and Confrides, totaling about 2,200 meters of climbing.
If you’re up for a challenge, you’re more than welcome to join.
After all, we came here to climb, didn’t we? 😎

Cheers, JP

Amicalement, JP

🇬🇧 Tuesday, October 28 – A Beautiful Day on the Bike!

Today was another fantastic day on the bike! We started this morning at Baguet with a great group of about 20 cyclists – a nice mix of regular riders and a few new faces. It’s always fun to meet new people; as a Belgian, I also once arrived here as a newcomer, and it’s great to join a group that knows the area so well.

Our route took us towards Pego, with climbs including Sorell and Camacho, plus a few smaller hills along the way. In total we covered about 92 km with 1,300 meters of elevation – a perfect cycling morning!

The atmosphere was excellent: after every climb, everyone waited so the group could stay together. After descending from Sorell, we had a lovely coffee stop filled with laughter and some great photos.

We then continued towards Camacho, regrouping at the gas station in Alcalalí. The last to arrive was the French lady, a friend of Cyriel and Karien – special thanks to Dirk, who stayed with her all ride, and to Carine, who accompanied her through Xaló. You were both amazing! 👏

And of course, the rest of the group too – it was another unforgettable day. The pictures say it all: great people, great weather, and great cycling!

At the end, we even ran into our American friends Kimberly and Chris from Texas – so nice to see them back in Calpe! 🇺🇸

➡️ Thursday’s ride will take us towards Relleu, which promises to be a solid challenge.
➡️ Tomorrow (Wednesday) I’ll leave at 9:15 a.m. for a ride of about 75 km – anyone who wants to join is very welcome!

Wishing everyone a great evening, and thanks again for an amazing day on the bike!
Best regards,
JP

Sportivement,
JP

☕ Coffee Ride to Velosol – Xaló

Friday, October 24, 2025

Today no tapas ride, but a coffee ride to Velosol in Xaló. We started from Baguet with 24 riders, including a few new faces – always great to see the group growing!

On the N332, Eddy had a flat tire, but everyone waited patiently – great teamwork as always. We then continued via Alcalalí and Murla, before riding through Benigembla and Parcent to return to Xaló, where Linda had already reserved a spot for our group at Velosol – thank you, Linda!

After our coffee stop, we rode through the valley in Gata, towards Llíber, then continued via Senija, Benissa, and the backside of the Poggio to finish back at Baguet in Calpe.

A few words of thanks:

To everyone for joining the ride – great atmosphere and teamwork.

To Ben, for his steady pace and excellent work at the front, making it easy for everyone to follow.

To Rich, who kindly offered to ride the Bernia climb again with Steve from the UK. Steve had rented a bike from Baguet, so his cycling day turned out to be a bit longer – and more memorable!

Thanks to all for another enjoyable ride!
Enjoy your Friday evening and Saturday, and don’t forget – on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. we ride again from Baguet, this time heading towards the coastline of Jávea. Everyone is welcome to join!

Sportive regards,

🚴‍♂️ Ride Report – Thursday, October 23: Coll de Rates & Sa Crueta 🌬️

When I rode towards Baguet this morning, I quickly realized: this is going to be a tough cycling day! The reason? Strong winds at the Salinas in Calpe.
Just before 9 a.m., I arrived at Baguet and saw Eddy, Luc, and a few other riders leaving for Guadalest. Fifteen minutes later, I set off with a group of 12 cyclists for our ride to Coll de Rates and Sa Crueta — a total of 95 km with about 1600 meters of climbing.

We took the route via the Pogio, and at the bottom of the climb, Gijs was waiting for us. He’s staying in Jávea and had promised to join one of our rides — and true to his word, there he was! Great respect for someone who rides 25 km just to meet up with our group.

During the descent from the Pogio, we knew for sure: this was going to be a hard day. The wind was relentless. Rich and Eddy decided to turn back, but a bit further along Guy and Patrick joined us, so we continued with a nice-sized group.

At the bottom of Coll de Rates, Ben, Gijs, and I took turns doing the headwind work, and it was tough! But surprisingly, once we started climbing, the wind eased off, so the determined riders were rewarded for their perseverance.

We enjoyed a well-deserved coffee stop in Tàrbena, and from Castell it was tailwind all the way back to Calpe — the perfect ending to a windy day!

💨 Thanks to everyone who joined the ride and battled the wind together!
And let’s not forget — Steve from the UK also rode with us today 👏

Tomorrow, we have a coffee ride on the program — everyone is welcome, departure at 9:15 a.m. from Baguet.
Wishing everyone a great evening!

Sportive greetings,
JP
