Meet Josh, our Chair!

Josh has been part of UPTPC since he started uni in September 2024 and has been playing tennis for around four years. Since joining us, he’s become a familiar face both on and off the court and has played a huge role in making the club what it is today.

For Josh, UPTPC has been one of the best parts of uni. More than just a sports club, he sees UPTPC as one big family, and anyone who knows him would probably agree that he’s a big reason why it feels that way.

Last year, Josh was one half of the iconic social secretary duo alongside his partner in crime, Eddie. Whether its Wednesday socials, social play sessions, or simply making an effort to chat to new members, Josh always goes out of his way to make people feel included. His commitment to the social side of the club is second to none, although it does mean you’ll usually find him battling the consequences of Wednesday socials and nursing a hangover from Thursday onwards.

This year, he’s swapped organising socials for leading the society as Chair. Having taken this year’s social secretaries, Charlie and Callum, under his wing, some might even say they’re becoming mini versions of Josh and Eddie themselves.

Those who know Josh know that he’s one of the kindest people you’ll meet. He cares deeply about his friends, is always willing to help others, and has a genuine ability to make everyone feel valued. It’s no surprise that when the Chair position became available, there wasn’t much competition - Josh is so well liked across the society that he was the obvious choice for the role.

We’re incredibly lucky to have Josh leading UPTPC this year and can’t wait to see what he achieves as Chair🫡

Meet Charlie and Callum, our Social Secs!

Charlie and Callum first met during Freshers’ Week at one of our social play taster sessions. Both arrived on their own, quickly became inseparable, and have been causing chaos together ever since.

Their friendship became a defining part of their first year in UPTPC. At Christmas Dinner, Charlie was awarded Best Fresher, while Callum proudly took home the title of Biggest Liability. By Summer Dinner, they had earned The Couple That Should Have Been - a title that perfectly sums up these two.

Charlie is one of the most approachable people you’ll ever meet and has a knack for making everyone feel welcome. He’s from Swindon and somehow manages to combine impressive swagger with an incredibly laid-back attitude. It’s been great to watch his confidence grow throughout the year, and he’s become such a valued part of the club because of his kindness and genuine interest in getting to know others. He’s also seriously talented on the tennis court, although thankfully he hasn’t let it go to his head. Charlie is known for taking dress-up socials incredibly seriously too, and it has to be said that he made a surprisingly convincing girl lol.

Callum was just as shy as Charlie when he first joined the society, but it didn’t take long for him to find his feet. Beneath his nonchalant façade is a genuinely caring, funny, and thoughtful person who always has time for his friends. If you manage to get a laugh out of Callum while he’s sober, consider it a real achievement, as cracking that cool exterior is no easy task. Give him a drink (or 15), however, and suddenly he has plenty to say. His tennis is seriously impressive too, which is rather annoying as it means he can usually back up the attitude 🙄

We’re excited to see what Charlie and Callum have in store for us this year and can’t wait for the socials they’ll be bringing from September onwards. Just don’t expect either of them to be home early on a Wednesday 😵‍💫

Meet Ollie, our Treasurer and Men’s 2nd Team Captain!

Ollie has been playing tennis for 17 years and joined UPTPC in his first week at university. Since then, the society has become a huge part of his university experience and where he’s made many of his closest friends.

Originally from Cornwall, Ollie brings plenty of experience to both the committee and the court. As Men’s 2nd Team Captain, he’ll be leading the team throughout the season, and if you ever watch him play, don’t be surprised to see him attempting shots nobody else would think of trying.

When he’s not on court, Ollie can usually be found listening to music, skateboarding, playing the piano, or working his way through an impressive amount of Pepsi Max. If there’s a can nearby, chances are it belongs to him.

Although he can seem a bit quiet when you first meet him, he’s always up for a laugh once you get to know him. There’s even video evidence of him giving karaoke a go at a social, though he’d probably rather everyone forgot about that.

As both Treasurer and Men’s 2nd Team Captain, Ollie will be helping to keep the club running smoothly both on and off the court. We’re excited to have him on the committee this year and can’t wait to see what he achieves in both roles

Meet Luke, our Tournament & Fundraising Sec!

Luke joined UPTPC in September and quickly discovered what makes the society so special. From the very beginning, he found everyone incredibly welcoming, friendly, and inclusive, with socials and social play helping him feel at home.

Although Luke first picked up a racket at the age of 10, he took a long break from tennis before returning to the sport at university. Since joining the club, he’s improved hugely through social play and gained confidence both on and off the court. One of the reasons he wanted to get back into tennis was so he could play more with his brother at home, making his return to the sport even more meaningful.

For Luke, the society has been the highlight of his second year. Not only has it helped him develop his tennis, but it’s also given him friendships he never expected to find and helped him become far more confident in himself.

Described as kind, welcoming, respectful, and occasionally a little bit obnoxious, Luke has grown from a shy new member into a valued part of the club. It’s been lovely to see his confidence grow over the past year and watch him become such an important part of the society.
As Tournament & Fundraising Sec, he’s excited to organise enjoyable tournaments, raise money for charity, and help bring people together in the same way the society brought him together with so many of his friends.

We’re excited to have Luke on the committee this year and can’t wait to see what he achieves in the role!

Meet Rhiana, our Ladies’ 1st Team Captain!

Rhiana has been playing tennis for nearly 9 years and it’s safe to say the sport has become a huge part of her life. In fact, if you know Rhiana, you’ll know that almost everything she owns is tennis-themed - a true sign of someone who lives and breathes the sport!

Having joined UPTPC at the start of last year, Rhiana quickly found a welcoming community and an environment where everyone can get involved, whether they’re picking up a racket for the first time or have been playing for years. For her, the society has been one of the best parts of university, and she’s excited to help continue that positive experience for others.

As our Ladies’ 1st Team Captain, Rhiana is looking forward to leading the team this year and hopefully bringing home some BUCS wins along the way. With her passion for tennis, dedication to the sport, and enthusiasm for the club, she’s ready to help the team achieve great things both on and off the court.

Her friends describe her as clever, loyal, funny, a great listener, and an all-round good friend - although they would probably all agree that she’s just a little bit tennis mad too.

We’re excited to have Rhiana leading the Ladies’ 1st Team this year and can’t wait to see what she and the team achieve. Good luck for the season!

Meet Marcus, one of our Padel Secs!

Marcus has been playing padel for around two years after first picking up the sport in sixth form with a friend. What started as a bit of fun quickly turned into a passion, and he’s been hooked ever since.

Interestingly, padel was Marcus’s first racket sport, unless you count his impressive county level table tennis career! Since joining the club last year, he’s loved the balance between the friendly and welcoming atmosphere off the court and the competitive spirit that appears when match time comes around.

Originally from the small Cotswold town of Cricklade, Marcus has spent his whole life there before making the move to university. Over the past year, he’s become a valued member of the club and is excited to help continue growing padel within UPTPC.

When he’s not on the padel court, you’ll usually find Marcus in the pub watching football with friends. In particular, he spends a significant amount of time hate-watching Arsenal, although he’ll happily watch just about any match that’s on regardless of who’s playing.

As one of our Padel Secretaries, Marcus is looking forward to helping develop the padel side of the club alongside fellow Padel Secretary Wilf. Between Marcus’s love for the sport and Wilf’s tactical masterclasses, we’re sure padel is in safe hands this year.

We’re excited to have Marcus on the committee and can’t wait to see what he and Wilf achieve together!

Meet Wilf, one of our Padel secs!

Hailing from Cornwall, Wilf brings elite energy, elite confidence, and what he would probably describe as elite sporting ability. Others may describe that final point slightly differently

Having only started playing tennis and padel last July, Wilf has thrown himself headfirst into both sports and quickly become a familiar face around the club. Whether he’s on court, organising padel sessions, or delivering a motivational speech that nobody asked for, his enthusiasm is impossible to miss

At first glance, Wilf can seem a little shy, but once you get to know him you’ll discover one of the funniest and quirkiest personalities in the society. His hidden sense of humour, questionable antics, and ability to make any situation entertaining have made him a valued member of the club

On court, Wilf approaches every casual hit as if it’s a tactical masterclass. Leadership, in his eyes, consists of being loud, pointing confidently, and coaching everyone around him whilst actively losing his own game. Expect frequent cries of “MINE!”, fist pumps after the opposition’s unforced errors, racket taps after almost every point, and tactical discussions that are far more serious than the match itself

Outside of racket sports, Wilf is a keen spearfisher with ongoing rivalries against losing, peach schnapps, and seals. He can also often be found attempting handstands in places where absolutely nobody asked him to do a handstand

Despite his occasional lack of emotional control following a bad bounce, Wilf’s passion for sport, infectious energy, and commitment to the club make him the perfect person to help grow padel within UPTPC this year

We’re excited to have Wilf as one of our Padel Secretaries and can’t wait to see what chaos he brings to the role 😎

Meet Maia, our Mental Health & Wellbeing Secretary!

Maia has been playing tennis on and off since she was 3 years old, thanks to her dad’s love for the sport. She came along to one of our very first social play sessions and ended up meeting one of her best friends there - proof that tennis is about much more than what happens on court!

One of Maia’s favourite things about university has been meeting people through all sorts of different groups, from course mates and accommodation friends to the amazing people she’s met through societies. She loves how societies give you the chance to build friendships and connections with people you might never have met otherwise.

If you’ve ever met Maia, you’ll know she’s incredibly funny, sarcastic in the best way possible, and one of the most thoughtful people you’ll come across. She’s always looking out for the people around her, isn’t afraid to stand up for what’s right, and certainly doesn’t take any rubbish from anyone. These qualities make her the perfect person to help ensure our club remains a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for everyone.

Whether you need someone to check in on you, point you towards support, or deliver a perfectly timed sarcastic comment, Maia’s got you covered.

We’re so excited to have Maia on the committee this year!

Meet Leon, our Health & Safety Secretary!

Before coming to university, Leon mainly played tennis casually with friends and at school, but he always enjoyed the sport. When he got the chance to pick it back up at university, joining Plymouth Tennis Society felt like the perfect opportunity to get back on court. Having a few friends already involved in the club helped make the decision even easier.

For Leon, one of the best things about the society has been the people. From social play sessions to joint socials, he’s met loads of new people, made some great friends, and found a community that has been a huge part of his university experience. He loves how welcoming everyone is and how easy the club makes it for new members to get involved.

Outside of tennis, Leon is no stranger to a social. Whether it’s a night out that somehow ends at Cuba in the early hours of the morning, or one of the legendary house parties he hosted last year, he always knows how to bring people together. He’s also good friends with our former social secretaries, Eddie and Josh, so it’s safe to say he’s learnt from the best.

As our Health & Safety Secretary, Leon will be helping to keep things running smoothly and safely throughout the year. Which is slightly ironic given that if you’ve ever come across the Fishes Instagram page, there’s a reasonable chance you’ve already spotted Leon making a guest appearance or two…

Fun fact: Leon is colour blind, so if you ever need help identifying colours, he’s probably not your man.

We’re excited to have Leon on the committee this year and can’t wait to see what he brings to the role!
