We talked about sustainability, teamwork, inclusion — and how sport can truly change the world when done with purpose. 💪

Every wave we rode carried a story, every breeze whispered a reminder:

🌊 Sail4Sustainability at “Navigating Together Toward Sustainability”! 🌍

Today, our team proudly joined the online event “Navigating Together Toward Sustainability” – a powerful gathering focused on protecting our coastal and marine environments. 💙⚓

📌 The event brought together passionate voices from across Europe to share local and international sustainability efforts.

🎤 Highlights from our team included:
🔹 ASD Sport Compass-presenting the project’s goals and collaborative vision.
🔹 JK MAXI, Croatia-sharing best practices from our local sailing programs and the Fiumanka Regatta – showcasing how sports events can inspire environmental awareness.
🔹 Sailors for Sustainability-offering real-life insights from their journey around the world, promoting sustainable living under sail.

Together, we are sailing toward a more responsible future! ⛵🌍

🌍 Learning and Acting for a Sustainable Future – Sail4Sustainability International Workshop in Amsterdam

As part of the Erasmus+ Sport project Sail4Sustainability, partners from the project participated in the International Workshop on Sustainable Sailing, held in Amsterdam on 23–24 April 2025.

The two-day workshop, organized by our partner Stichting Sailors for Sustainability, gathered 19 participants from across Europe. The focus was on increasing awareness of environmental sustainability, promoting inclusion and diversity in sailing, and developing practical ideas to make sailing more eco-friendly and accessible to all.

Participants attended inspiring keynote sessions led by Floris van Hees and Ivar Smits, who shared their real-world experiences from their eight-year journey around the globe searching for sustainable solutions. The group also engaged in interactive sessions discussing key challenges such as reducing plastic use, protecting marine ecosystems, and making sailing more inclusive for underrepresented groups.

But this workshop was not just theoretical – we put our knowledge into practice! 🌿

During the second day, participants had the opportunity to experience sailing on a Plastic Whale boat, an innovative boat made entirely from recycled plastic collected from Amsterdam’s canals. While navigating the canals, they also participated in a cleanup event, helping to remove waste from the water and directly contributing to cleaner, healthier waterways.

This hands-on experience perfectly complemented the workshop’s objectives, showing that even small actions can lead to big impacts when it comes to sustainability.

We are proud to be part of this dynamic international network, working together to make sailing a driving force for positive environmental and social change! ⛵💚

🌊⛵ National Workshop – Sustainable Sailing Practices 🇭🇷 🌿

On April 9th, 2025, we held our National Workshop in Croatia to test the effectiveness and usability of all components developed in our Train the Trainer and Trainee Program on Sustainable Sailing Practices.

Through piloting and feedback from both experts and users, we gained valuable insights to refine our materials.

The program includes practical training tools and e-learning videos, structured in three key parts:

1️⃣ Eco-conscious Sailing – reduce pollution, cut emissions, and protect marine life.
2️⃣ Inclusive Sailing Community – create welcoming, accessible spaces for everyone.
3️⃣ Sustainability Ambassadors – become changemakers in your clubs and communities.

🌍 The feedback was incredibly positive and motivating! We’re proud to be charting a course toward a more sustainable and inclusive future in sailing.

#10: Help others where you can. Share tools, books, tips, and food, and employ your skills. Learn from each other and reward generosity from locals with things that are useful to them.

#9: Respect wildlife. Cruising allows you to get into uniquely beautiful natural environments. Be mindful about this and respect the creatures that you are enjoying. When anchoring, always look for sandy patches. Check if your anchor chain is not damaging the coral and attach fenders to lift it if necessary. Keep your distance, especially when the next generation is involved like with nesting birds or whales with calves. If you fish, don’t take more than you can eat.

#8: Join or organize beach-cleanups. Return nature a favor and pick up plastic litter. You’ll also meet inspiring and engaged people who decide to join. Take fellow cruisers along - you’ll be surprised how fanatic people get once they start picking up litter.

🌍💙 Today is World Down Syndrome Day – a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and celebrating diversity in all areas of life.

At Sail4Sustainability, we believe sailing should be for everyone. Inclusion and diversity are at the heart of what we do — because fair access to sport and nature isn't just right, it's smart.

#7: Support the local people. When you buy directly from the local fishermen, farmers, or bakers, you reward the people who do most of the work. They can support their families and your money circulates longer in the local economy. Buying produce at the street market also supports diversity and usually offers better value for money. And of course, bring your own reusable bags so you can politely refuse plastic bags.

#6: Eat more local and plant-based food. Local food has lower transportation emissions and stimulates the local economy compared to imported products. Plant-based food like beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, nuts and raisins require much less natural resources to produce compared to meat - and are animal friendly. They are also cheaper, easier to stock up and delicious!
