"𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆"

Hola amigos! I’m Keith Hamilton, originally from Edinburgh and proudly one of the club’s Over 60s members.

Growing up, football wasn’t really my thing. Despite attending Tynecastle High School, right next door to the Heart of Midlothian FC stadium, and having Hearts legend Gary Mackay as one of my classmates, I showed surprisingly little interest in sport.
Gary went on to make over 700 appearances for Hearts and represent Scotland at international level — while my own passion was music!
I started playing drums at an early age and eventually went on to play with a reasonably successful 1980s post-punk/goth band.

It wasn’t until my late 20s that football finally entered my life. I started playing five-a-side with friends from the pub and work. Nothing too serious — just good, friendly games and plenty of socialising.

Between 2010 and 2015, I also took up running, completing several 10K races and two half marathons.
I left Scotland in 2017 in search of blue skies and sunshine, and moved to the Costa Blanca earlier this year. Within a few weeks, I came across a Facebook post about Benijófar Community Walking Football Club, and I was immediately interested.
I got in touch and signed up for the first training session a few weeks later.

Walking into that first session felt a bit like the first day at school.
Nobody really knew each other, but within minutes we were chatting, kicking a ball around and starting to make new friends.
The “teachers” — our fantastic club management and organising team — gave us a briefing on the rules, explained their vision for the club, and then put us through a warm-up and stretching session.

Like many others that day, I hadn’t kicked a football for 20 or 30 years! We all got stuck in and did our best. The great thing was that there was no pressure and no judgement — just encouragement, laughter and enjoyment.

During those first few sessions, I’m sure I was playing like a two-left-footed, headless chicken! 😂 But thanks to the coaching, advice and encouragement from the club and its members, I’ve improved a little every week.

And recently, I even managed to score my first goal! ⚽🙌

Joining BCWFC and taking up walking football has been a fantastic way to improve my fitness and keep active.
As we get older, keeping the mind sharp and staying alert is just as important — and what better way to do that than by trying something new, challenging yourself and having fun along the way?
The social side has been equally fantastic. It’s such an easy and enjoyable way to meet new people from different nationalities and backgrounds. Whether it’s at a club social event or simply having a few refreshments after training, there’s always plenty of conversation, laughter and good company.

For me, BCWFC is about much more than football. It’s about fitness, friendship, fun and being part of a community.
So, if you’re looking for an enjoyable way to spend a few hours, get some exercise, meet new people and have a good laugh along the way, why not come along and join us at Benijófar Community Walking Football Club?

"𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆"

Hola, or being a proud Yorkshire lass, Ey Up!

Liz Casey (The Ladies team gaffer)

I come from Castleford, West Yorkshire in the UK and have lived in Spain full time for 14 months following zipping back and forwards for 24 years.

I’m 66 years old and sport has always been a huge part of my life, although football isn’t the only game in town! My real passion has always been running – from track, road, trail, fell(mountain) through to Ultra’s - along with cycling.

I love the challenge of pitting myself against the odds and pushing to see what I can achieve.
From the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales to the Spanish sunshine sport has always been a big part of who I am.
I started playing in the UK with Julie (my wife) to give us something to do together (aww!) that would hopefully not injure us.
At first for me, as a life long runner, team sport was new but I quickly found that I loved it, so much so we ended up playing for three teams very quickly, one in Spain and two in the UK. I was hooked…
I now play two or three times a week and am looking forwards to playing in the new mixed league and upcoming club tournaments. I am also and very proud to be part of the Over 60’s Team Spain Squad playing in the European Nations Cup in November.
Walking football has given me an extended life in sport. I can continue to be active without having the need to pound out miles and miles each week. I have also gained a fantastic set of friends from all corners of the globe. It shows that even with age the fun, friendship and passion remains. Benijofar Community WFC supports and facilitates this an a massive way and is fully behind supporting the ladies and making them an integral part of the club.
I feel as though we are at the start of the sport really growing in this part of the world which is exciting, from new players looking for fitness and fun to those that want to compete at club or international level.
And before anyone asks – yes, ladies football matters just as much as the men’s game….football is football – whether played by blokes or brilliant women. The passion, drama and questionable refereeing are all the same! Ladies football is every bit as important as mens football.
Same pitch…Same rules… Same passion… Much better banter!!!!

"𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆"

Hola, my name is Ray Harrison, although most people know me by my club nickname, Mondo...AKA the club Bib & 1st Aid man.
I originally come from Birmingham in the UK, but Spain has been my home for many years now, and I feel very fortunate to call it home.

I’m a young 70-year-old who enjoys keeping active through cycling and walking.
I’ve also been a football fan for as long as I can remember, and I particularly enjoy watching Benijófar CF and Elche CF.

Twenty-three years ago, I suffered two heart attacks. At the time, I honestly thought my days of playing football were over.
I never imagined that, years later, I would find myself back on a football pitch, enjoying the game all over again.
Then, quite by chance, I saw an advertisement for walking football for the over-60s.
Something about it caught my attention, so I decided to go along and see what it was all about.
I still remember how welcome I was made to feel from that very first day. The players and management were friendly, welcoming and encouraging, and there was no pressure whatsoever.

What started as simply going along to have a look has turned into something far more meaningful.
I have completely fallen in love with walking football.
For me, it’s about much more than kicking a football around.
The social side is just as important.
We have people from many different nationalities and backgrounds, but once we step onto that pitch, we are all part of the same team.

Over time, the players and managers have become like a second family to me. There is a genuine sense of friendship, camaraderie and belonging, and that is something I value enormously.

Walking football has given me something I never thought I would have again — the chance to enjoy the game I love.

But it has given me much more than that.
It has given me great friendships, laughter, a reason to get out there and, every week, something to look forward to.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the management of Benijófar Community Walking Football Club and Benijófar Council for helping to make all of this possible.

What they have created is about so much more than football.
They have created a community where people can stay active, meet new friends, have a laugh and, perhaps most importantly, feel that they belong.

I feel genuinely lucky to be part of it.
At 70 years young, I’m still playing football, still making new friends and still enjoying every minute of it.

When I think back to those days 23 years ago, when I believed my footballing days were over, I realised just how much life can surprise you.

And that’s something I’ll never take for granted.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
