WEEK 4 OF OUR DAY TRIP SERIES: THE SURPRISES OF JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA 💃🐎🍷
Over the past few weeks, we’ve hiked the Ronda gorge, whale-watched in Tarifa, and ridden horses on the beaches of Conil. Today, we are heading about 1.5 to 2 hours inland from Los Arqueros to a city that surprises almost everyone: Jerez de la Frontera.
Known globally as the birthplace of Sherry, authentic Flamenco, and dancing horses, Jerez is an absolute must-visit. If you want to show visiting friends or family the deeply traditional, elegant side of Andalucia, this is your ultimate itinerary:
🐎 1. Marvel at the "Dancing Horses"
Start your morning at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Book tickets for the "How the Andalusian Horses Dance" show. Watching these magnificent, highly trained horses perform to classical Spanish music in a stunning 19th-century arena is a mesmerizing, goosebump-inducing experience for all ages.
🚂 2. A "Family-Friendly" Bodega Tour
You cannot visit Jerez without visiting a Sherry Bodega, but how do you keep the kids entertained? Book a tour at Bodegas Tío Pepe (González Byass). The estate is so massive that they take you around on a mini-train! The kids will love the ride and spotting the famous "drunk mice" (who are left little glasses of sweet sherry), while the adults get to taste some of the world's finest fortified wines.
🏰 3. See the City in a "Camera Obscura"
Head to the 11th-century Moorish Alcázar in the beautiful old town. Inside the Villavicencio Palace, you'll find a Camera Obscura. It uses ancient mirror technology to project a live, moving, 360-degree image of the entire city into a dark room. It feels like magic and completely fascinates both kids and adults!
💃 4. Tapas and Impromptu Flamenco
Finish your day in a traditional Tabanco (an old-school sherry tavern). We highly recommend Tabanco El Pasaje. You can order simple, delicious tapas, sip sherry straight from the barrel, and watch passionate, up-close flamenco performances. It is loud, vibrant, and authentically Spanish.
Living at Los Arqueros means this world-class cultural capital is close enough for an easy, unforgettable day trip.
