Menopause, Pain, and the Power of Movement
Many women begin to experience the first hormonal changes associated with menopause from the age of 40. Common symptoms include pain in the shoulders, knees, arms, hips, or back, joint stiffness, fatigue, loss of muscle strength, and even the condition known as frozen shoulder syndrome. In this case, shoulder movement becomes restricted and painful, making everyday activities more difficult.
When pain appears, many women naturally move less because they are afraid that exercise will make things worse. However, regular physical activity is one of the most effective natural ways to reduce these symptoms.
During the first few weeks, exercise may feel difficult and sometimes even uncomfortable. This is completely normal. The body needs time to adapt, strengthen, and regain balance. With consistency, muscles become stronger, joints become more stable, and posture, balance, and overall well-being improve.
That is why we have introduced weights and resistance bands into our Pilates classes. This is not by accident. We belong to the same age group as many of our clients, and we understand the physical and emotional changes that women go through during this stage of life because we experience them ourselves.
Strength training offers another major benefit: it helps build and maintain muscle mass. Many people simply say that lifting weights "turns fat into muscle." While this is not technically what happens, regular resistance training helps reduce body fat while increasing muscle strength and tone. As a result, the body becomes stronger, firmer, and healthier. It also boosts metabolism, strengthens bones, and supports overall health.
There is another important advantage of regular exercise: it increases your energy levels. Many people believe that exercise will leave them feeling exhausted, but the opposite is usually true. Regular movement improves blood circulation, increases oxygen supply throughout the body, enhances sleep quality, and helps you feel more energetic and motivated throughout the day. Many women notice that after just a few weeks of training, they have significantly more energy than before.
Our goal is not to create elite athletes. Our goal is to help women become stronger, more energetic, and live with less pain. Pilates, combined with resistance training using weights and bands, can help maintain muscle mass, improve balance, support healthy joints, and reduce many of the symptoms associated with menopause.
It may hurt today. It may feel difficult today. But your body will thank you tomorrow for what you do for it today.
💜 Move for yourself, for your health, and so that your body can remain strong, energetic, and healthy for many years to come. 💪
