Two patients helped fire England’s men’s transplant football team to victory in the first Four Nations tournament – under the leadership of an OUH staff member.

Kidney transplant recipients Robert Collins and Adam Martin, both cared for at the Churchill Hospital, were part of the unbeaten squad managed by Daley Cross, Renal and Transplant Youth Worker.

The tournament brought together more than 60 transplant recipients from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, celebrating the transformative power of organ donation.

Robert said: “Having a transplant has given me the chance to get back on the pitch and enjoy the game again… every time we play, it’s a celebration of that.”

Daley said: “While it’s fantastic to bring the trophy home, the most important thing is the message behind the tournament. This is about showing what organ donation makes possible. Every player is living proof of the difference it can make."

Congratulations to the England Transplant Sport Football who returned home as the WINNERS from the first ever recent Four Nations event.

With support from, NHS Highland,Transplant Active, Ross County Fc and Duncan MacAulay, a local man who had a heart transplant in February 2023, the two-day event showcased more than 60 competing footballers from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales all who have undergone organ transplants of some form.

The event was seen as a chance to raise awareness of the benefits of organ donation. Lots of transplant donation information was on hand at the Global Energy aimed at trying to raise awareness of the ever-increasing numbers on the transplant waiting list and the power of organ donation.

The results in the group stages lined up a final between England and Scotland on the Saturday afternoon with England coming away winners earning them the silverware.

Manager, Daley Cross, said: ‘What a brilliant weekend, whilst it was great to come away with the trophy, we must remember the purpose of the event and the overall bigger message of raising the profile of organ donation.
