HURGHADA

30 years ago Hurghada was a fishing village. 20 years ago sport fishers took to the beaches and were amazed by the amount of fish biting on their hooks. Then came the divers and now the streets of Hurghada are filled with shopping holiday-makers and sun seekers. Some say it has turned into Sharm El Sheikh with Burger King, Costa Coffee and other signs of "civilisation" and for sure it's lost some of its original genuine charm since I came here in 1999 but you can still find the real Egypt if you stay off the main strip.

Diving in El Gouna

There are a huge variety of dive sites reachable with daily boats from El Gouna.

You can dive exiting historical wrecks lost on the trade routes from India in late 1800 like The Ulysses and The Carnatic.

You can visit the dramatic wrecks from WWII like The Thistlegorm and Rosalie Moller.

There are easy wrecks for any level of divers like the more recent from maritime losses of Ghiannis D, Crisoula K, Kimon M around Shaab Abu Nuhas and the famous Barge at Bluff Point.

There are sheer walls covered with softcorals and gorgonian fans at Um Gammar, Shaab Ruhr Um Gammar and Bluff Point.

Gorgeous hard coral gardens invites for spectacular photo sessions at Abu Nugar Blind Reef Gota Abu Nuhas and Poseidon Reef.

Very good chanses to dive and snorkel with wild bottlenose dolphins around the famous Shaab el Erg.

Gulf of Suez is a 300 km long, 50 km wide with depths ranging between 50 and 75 m.
Gulf of Aqaba is 180 km long and 25 km wide, narrow in the north and widening to the south with maximum depths of 1850 meters.

Approximately 40 % of the Red Sea is quite shallow (less than 100 m) whereas about 25 % of the Red Sea is less than 50 m deep. About 15 % of the Red Sea is over 1000 m depth. Shelf breaks are marked by coral reefs and the continental slope has an irregular profile (series of steps down to 500 m)

In 1869, the completion of the Suez Canal by a French company linked Egypt's Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts and made the country a strategic crossroads. British troops occupied the county in 1882, and it was more or less a British colony until resuming its independence in 1922.
