You’ve probably heard venomous and poisonous used the same way underwater… but they’re not. And the difference matters.

Venomous animals inject toxins into you
like a lionfish with its spines or a box jellyfish with its stingers

Poisonous animals affect you when you touch, inhale, or eat them
like pufferfish or certain reef organisms

Simple way to remember it
If it stings you, it’s venomous
If you mess with it, it’s poisonous

Most marine life isn’t aggressive, just well defended.
That’s why the rule is simple
Look, don’t touch.

Good buoyancy and awareness keep you safe and protect the reef too.
