A hunter puts venison in their freezer for the year.
A vegan buys avocados shipped across the world.
Which lifestyle has the smaller environmental footprint?

I am a trophy hunter. The problem is that most people have no idea what that actually means. They think trophy hunting means killing an animal, taking the antlers or hide, and wasting the meat. That is not trophy hunting. That is illegal. Hunters are required to use the meat, and anyone who wastes an animal should be called out for it. To me, the trophy is the whole experience. The meat is a trophy. The memory is a trophy. The animal is a trophy because it was respected, used, and remembered. So yes, I am a trophy hunter, and I am not ashamed to say it.

If hunting disappeared tomorrow,
who should manage exploding deer populations?
What would you do?

An 11-year-old kid legally shot an albino buck in Michigan, and anti-hunters lost their minds because the deer was white. That is how unserious their version of wildlife management is. Albino and piebald deer are not magical animals. They are deer with color mutations, and in most cases those mutations come with real disadvantages like poor eyesight, higher visibility to predators, and other genetic issues. The only reason people act like they are sacred is because they are prettier. But is that really how we want to manage wildlife? The prettier the animal is, the more it matters? Nobody cries when hunters shoot hogs, or “ugly” animals, but make a deer white and suddenly everyone becomes a wildlife biologist. That is not science. That is emotion. And it shows exactly what anti-hunting outrage is usually based on. How the picture makes them feel, not whether the hunt actually made biological sense.

Are deer overpopulated in your area? That question depends a lot on who you ask. “Overpopulated” gets thrown around a lot, but it means different things to different people. A homeowner with deer eating shrubs may think there are way too many. A hunter seeing fewer deer on his farm may think there are not enough. An insurance company that doesn’t want to pay out claims will think they are overpopulated. So maybe the real question is not whether deer are overpopulated everywhere. It is whether they are overpopulated where you live, where you hunt, and by what standard.

A lot of hunters were taught that you can tell a buck from a doe by looking at the dewclaws, but that’s just another old hunting myth that keeps getting passed around. Both bucks and does have dewclaws, so using that as proof of s*x is an illogical. Deer hunting is full of little “facts” like this that somebody heard from another hunter, repeated for years, and never actually questioned. What’s another hunting myth you were taught growing up?
