🐟✨ Throwback Thursday ✨🐟

And a look forward too as we just heard that:

🔬 Rachel Gunn of the University of Tübingen and her team will be returning this September for the next phase of their research into cleaner fish behaviour.

Their study helps us better understand how our marine environment is responding to change 🌍💙

We’re incredibly proud to support this important project and this year there was an exciting new addition:

❄️ For the first time, our amazing volunteers carried out a winter survey to allow seasonal comparisons alongside the usual observations 👏

A huge thank you to everyone involved. We can’t wait to see what this next stage of the project reveals! 🐠 And if you’d like to be part of the fun, DM us or send an email to: [email protected]

Dive guide Khaled and his buddy Kym spotted an amazing Spanish Dancer nudibranch on our house reef yesterday 💃✨🌊

These little beauties are always such a treat to find, such vivid colors and so much personality, and we love sharing the moments when the reef surprises you. 😍🐠

Huge thanks to Khaled and Kym for keeping an eagle eye (or should we say, a nudibranch nose?) and to all our divers for coming out and exploring together with us. 💙

Congratulations, Frankfurt University! 🎉🎓It was truly great to have you all back again, and what an amazing achievement....

📊 Citizen Science Sunday: Dive4Diadema 2025

DIve4Diadema is just one of the many citizen science projects supported by Pharaoh Dive Club, Open Ocean Project and Roots Red Sea El Quseir working to protect and better understand the local marine ecosystems through community driven science.

Final Figures are in:

🟢 Healthy: 33 😀
🟡 Diseased: 6 😞
🔴 Dead: 113 😢

These numbers paint a stark picture. The long-spined sea urchin (Diadema Setosum), a vital species for maintaining healthy reef ecosystems, is facing significant decline. With far more individuals recorded dead than alive, the balance of these fragile marine environments is at risk.

Why does this matter? Diadema Setosum play a crucial role in controlling algae growth on reefs. Without them, algae can overgrow and suffocate corals, reducing biodiversity and weakening reef resilience.

The good news: this data exists because of citizen scientists like you. Every survey dive helps build a clearer understanding of what’s happening beneath the surface—and what needs to be done next.

💙 Want to be part of the solution? Stay engaged, support citizen science, and help us turn data into action. Guests are welcome to join any of our citizen science dives, better still come and do a stint volunteering with us!

🌊 This Beautiful Spotted eagle ray made our day! At Pharaoh Dive Club and Roots Red Sea, we were lucky enough to witness this graceful giant cruising through our stunning house reef.

Quick facts (for the curious divers!):

• Latin name: Aetobatus Narinari (spotted eagle ray)
• It can look like it’s gliding, eagle rays “fly” through the water by moving their large pectoral fins.
• Powerful yet peaceful, it often moves slowly as it searches for food along the sandy bottom.
• Seeing it here is a reminder of how alive and wild our Red Sea house reef truly is.

If you want to experience this magic with your own eyes, come dive with us and see what’s swimming just off the reef at Pharaoh Dive Club & Roots Red Sea. 🐠✨

🌊 A day in the life of our Marine Biology Interns at Pharaoh Dive Club 🌊

For the next 2 months, our marine biology interns will be working side-by-side with our teams at Pharaoh Dive Club, bringing marine biology projects to life and supporting our citizen science programs, helping us collect, observe, and learn from the ocean in real time.

Today’s schedule might include:
🧪 Gathering data for ongoing marine biology projects
🔎 Monitoring marine life and habitats during dive-based fieldwork
📊 Helping process and contribute findings to our citizen science efforts

We’re proud to see our current interns thriving , Oscar and Adam, who qualified last year from Glasgow University, have shown what’s possible with real experience and dedication.

If you’re interested in our Marine Biology Intern Program or our general volunteer program, message us for more information.

You too could have days like this. ✅✨
